5. Dairy
Calcium increases risk of cancer
Animal protein may help cause bone loss
Cows typically live 20 years, but in dairy farms they live for about 5 years
After they have passed they are used for soap, food for cats and dogs, and beef
6. Milk
Cows injected with hormones and antibiotics to produce more milk
Associated with stress and fractures
Doesn’t reduce fractures
May increase by 50%
8. Veganism
Seems like an extreme idea
Different types of veganism
Plant based
Whole foods diet (overprotective moms)
Junk food

Editor's Notes
I wanted to take this time to introduce the dangerous effects of eating meat and cheese on an everyday basis, and what ways you can take a different approach to take on a healthier eating lifestyle. The week we saw the insight into how bad the meat industry was to treating animals, how bad it was to the planet, and how we could we reduce our gas footsteps; I thought it was needed to know what is really in our foods. People who consume meat and dairy every day, do not understand how dangerous it is when you have high intakes of both. Most people disagree that they are unhealthy because they grew up on these foods and believing the propaganda, plus it is almost in every culture. Then there are people who are totally against it and believe 100% in only eating plant-based foods. There is no in-between, but there should be, and I am going to highlight the dangerous aspects of it.
The average person consumes 200 pounds of meat. A carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in the living tissue. Colon cancer, heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, and kidney stones are all also part of the effects of consuming meat on a daily basis for a long period of time. Our stomachs have a hard time digesting all the meat because of the amount of protein in the meat which causes the bloating people to experience after digging into a plate of food.
The documentaries that Professor Potorti provided for us this semester gave us an inside look at what happens in the animal industry. It is not about what is the best meat, it is about getting the production done as fast as they can, and to keep growing their lands to make more income. The amount of pollution that is given off to feed, kill, and transport the animals is enough to raise eyebrows. Between a hundred and one hundred 15 million animals die from the makeup industry alone. Animal agriculture occupies 45% of the earth’s land, 91% of amazon destruction, and leading causes of dead zones.
One thing that people who are against going vegan or anything plant-based say that you cannot get nutrients and/or vitamins from veggies so they need to consume dairy in order to get it. You do not need to consume dairy in order to get calcium as it is chemically added to dairy but naturally found in kale, broccoli, spinach, kelp, soybeans, etc.. This is the healthier option opposed to drinking one cup of milk a day and also cheaper in the long run.
The dairy industry is just as harming, if not more to us and the animals. As we saw, cows who purposely impregnated to produce more milk, and once they give birth, if it is a male, it will be sent to the slaughterhouse, and if it is female it will used in the production of milk. Once cows are no longer able to produce milk, they are either sent to the slaughterhouse or some of their body parts are used to make soap. Milk that you see in the grocery stores are full of antibiotics, chemicals, and puss. It is not real milk because real milk that comes straight from the cows smells, and is actually a brown color. So what you are buying is essentially fake.
Just another slide with more milk information
Like Graham Hill said, most people are not ready to either be a full on meat eater or vegetarian so why pick a side? Without a doubt, people need to eat more veggies instead of meat. The solution could be like Graham Hill’s weekday vegetarian, eat veggies on the weekday and eat whatever you want on the weekend. This small action could impact the animal industry and also your health for the better.
Now, a lot of people think that veganism is very extreme and almost impossible, but it is not. Although, it is not the answer for anyone and their lifestyle. I just wanted to clear a few things up about veganism, it has different parts to it. Plant-based or raw vegan is the type where you eat strictly plants and nothing else. Whole foods are the type where everything has to be organic, locally grown and crazy expensive for no reason; I like to call this the overprotective mom, the one that does not let their kids eat Oreos but the newman-o’s. Then there is the junk food vegan. Believe it or not, Oreos are in fact vegan so they apply to this category. Basically, as long as it does not have meat or cheese, it is all game to eat no matter if it is healthy or not. Of course, you be all of these or just be one, but now you know the difference.
Once again, I believe that in order to reduce the growing demands of the animal industry and the killing of our planet, we need to do more on our part and that is more than just protesting. We need to take a look at what is on our plate and understand that not too good come out of eating that cheeseburger or that chicken nacho besides happy taste buds. I am not saying the veganism is the answer either, but if we introduce more veggies instead of the animal to our plates, we could help ourselves and the world we live in. Thank you.
