Professional
experience
May. 2012 – Now Shell Canada
Senior Petrophysicist (Technical Authority (TA2) of
Petrophysics)
I am currently responsible for Petrophysical discipline from assuring
quality/standards point of view (TA2) of the Heavy Oil Dep. in Shell Canada. I
am responsible for providing the petrophysical inputs for the several teams
by integrating all available data (Mud-logs, Wireline-LWD OHLOGS, NMR,
core..etc.), review development plans through Integrated Technical reviews
(ITRs), integrate the petrophysical data in the geological model building,
saturation modeling in core and log domains, permeability modeling, present
the petrophysical understanding to team and management meetings,
address interpretation uncertainty ranges, design cost effective logging and
coring programs (Acquisition and analysis), supervise/mentor the younger
Petrophysicists. I am currently the Shell Global SME Associate (aSME) for
Borehole imaging and resistivity tools and Nominated for aSME for the 3DEX
(Resistivity anisotropy tools).
I was lately more focused on Carmon Creek project data acquisition and
interpretation. The main areas of interpretation are, review and validate the
PAD106 and Pad 107 formation evaluation and feed the results to Petrel
model, well integrity and cement bond log interpretation (about 100 wells in
45 days) and full formation evolution of the 2 observation wells drilled in late
2014, implement the data management work flows of core and log data
(above 85-90% success) and update the geological (model/volumes) of the
field based on the new data.
In QUEST project, I have carried out a strong role in data acquisition
planning (triple compo, DSI, OBMI, NMR, MDT and ECS), build cost
effective logging and coring plans (saved about 600k in core analysis). I have
built a permeability model that agrees the well test results which led the
reservoir understanding towards the high side of permeability estimation
(initially perm was estimated to be 400 mD new model about 1000 mD) and
support lower number of wells needed for CO2 injection proposed by the RE
(3 wells instead of 8). Select and execute pressure and fluid sampling points.
Updating the geological model of the QUEST project by incorporating the
newly drilled wells data and building time lapse logging plan for monitoring
CO2 injection of the QUEST project by running baseline RST logs to assure
CO2 conformance and containment as part of the MMV plan. We celebrated
the QUEST opening Oct. 2015. The project was on time and under budget.
Currently beside QUEST support, I am providing reservoir properties input
for the framing of the EOR possibilities of using CO2 for miscible CO2
flooding opportunities in brown fields (Clive) that is used for EOR framing
(DG1), more detailed modeling will be needed for the next decision gates.
Although I am heavily involved in heavy oil, As Shell Associate SME for
borehole imaging and resistivity, I am responsible of building Shell
standards for borehole image QAQC/interpretation. Form resistivity point
of view, I am helping on building the knowledge of laminated sand shale
sequences on resistivity and build interpretation work flows. I have
looked over unconventional reservoirs in Canada (Shale Gas), where I
3. added value by identifying fractures from Borehole images, I also helped
in reducing the uncertainty in density porosity from LWD tools by using
the all density sectors available. I am part of the TA2s who worked on
defining the unconventional guidelines of defining net reservoir and net
pay where the assessment of the stimulated frack height is a parameter
of the reserve calculation. I have attended fiber optics training where it
was used to monitor the production after fracking. I have used the
resistivity anisotropy data in an attempt to improve saturation calculation.
I have knowledge of using the ECS and NMR to build more robust
petrophysical model that is calibrated to XRD/XRF data. I do believe that
gathering proper mud gas data can help a lot in defining the potential
shale gas/oil zones. I was trying to promote acquiring sonic data in
horizontal wells to carry out selective fracking by getting better
understanding of the formation frack ability but the budget constrains did
not give the chance to experiment it, I do believe that the shale layers
are not homogenous form geomechanical point of view (this could save
a lot of money if selective frack intervals are chosen).
For the Deepwater assets, I have helped reorienting core bed forms by
orienting high resolution CT scan images.
I have a strong input to the Orion SAGD re-drill of PAD 106 from formation
evaluation and well placement point of view, where formation evaluation/BHI
data were integrated with different data types (e.g. production, mud logs and
reservoir temp. data), which enhanced the understanding of the reservoir
and helped selling the field with good value for Shell.
Sep. 2011 – May 2012 Sproule
Senior Petrophysical Specialist
My role in Sproule is reserve auditing by carrying out Full-field petrophysical
studies, analyze capillary pressure curves and build saturation height
functions, assess the uncertainty associated with Petrophysical evaluations,
Reservoir characterization, petrophysical value assurance for reservoir
modeling, provide pertophysical support to Domestic, Unconventional and
International teams of Sproule and marketing, promoting and bringing new
experiences to Sproule Services. This assignment gave me exposure to
fields from different countries (Russia, Australia, Canada, North Sea,
Kazakhstan, UK and Trinidad and Tobago.)
Nov. 2010 – Sep 2011 British Gas
Principal Petrophysicist
I was responsible for the Petrophysical discipline in Trinidad. I am
responsible for providing the petrophysical inputs for the NCMA and the
Trinidad asset by integrating all available data (Mud-logs, Wireline-LWD
OHLOGS, NMR, core..etc), integrate the petrophysical data in the geological
model building, build saturation modeling in core and log domains for static
modeling purposes, permeability modeling, present the petrophysical
understanding to the partners in the TCM meetings, address interpretation
uncertainty ranges, design logging programs, build the yearly work plan of
the petrophysics team that contributes to the company’s work plan, data
QAQA, put with integration with the headquarters, the standard data
archiving method and supervise the younger petrophysicists. I have looked
after the petrophysical needs of the exploration department by providing
better understanding of pressure gradient analysis that opened another view
for larger field possibilities and I provided petrophysical interpretation for
exploration blocks with old data sets (lots of data integration of mud logs,
wireline logs and pressure/temp data).
4. Aug. 2007 – 2010 Petroleum Development of Oman Muscat, Oman
Petrophysicist/BHI (Borehole Images) Expert
I was the hit squad team Petrophysicist; i am responsible for the
petrophysical evaluation of the studies that come to the team by using Wire-
line, LWD and core data. I am part of the software development team
(Techlog, Shell Petrophysical Software) where I contributed in testing and
guiding the software development. I have carried out petrophysical
interpretation over tight oil reservoirs (clicilite) (Al-noor and Al-shmoaa fields)
where I have integrated Wireline logs, mudlog data and image logs to define
the OWC and perf/Frac zones. I have supported tight gas teams in
developing better reservoir understanding by developing workflows to extract
net sand fraction from thinly laminated pays. I am involved in evaluating
vendor's contracts (commercial and technical). I have built permeability
models for vuggy carbonates, where the integration of rock typing, logs and
borehole images led to better reservoir description. On the top of that, I am
responsible for building the knowledge and strategy of borehole image logs
data acquisition, QC and interpretation of PDO. I am also building integrated
solutions of BHI interpretation and the petrophysical evaluation. I play a role
in evaluating the contracts of BHI data interpretation and acquisition. I also
design/teach training courses for Borehole image interpretation. I have
contributed to the Heavy oil projects in Oman by providing information about
fracture density, orientation and stress directions that optimize the SAGD
well planning.
March 2006 – July 2007 Schlumberger Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia
Image Geologist / Petrophysicist (Image Geology Team Leader).
I was responsible for borehole image (FMI/UBI images) processing and
interpretation for Armco, Khafji and Babco oil companies. I did also
resistivity processing, log QC, quick look petrophysical evaluation and
customer service (sales and marketing). I did formation evaluation over
carbonate and clastics reservoirs. I was responsible for younger
candidates to transfer the knowledge and get them into speed.
2004 – March 2006 Baker Atlas Ahmadi, Kuwait

I was responsible for processing and interpreting the 3DEX data. I carried
out resistivity processing, acoustic processing, log QA/QC, quick look
petrophysical evaluation and customer support/service for wire line logs
(Sales, marketing, operational support (building logging programs) and
data QAQC). I did image interpretation over carbonate and clastics
reservoirs. I was responsible for borehole image data
(STAR/FMI/EMI/UBI/CAST-V and LWD images) processing and
interpretation.
I worked over the North, West and South East Kuwait Fields (Sabriyah,
Rawdateen, Managish, etc). I have built very good relationships with KOC
based on integrity and trust with good understanding of the Kuwaiti culture
challenges. I still keep good connections with Kuwaitis till now.
