1. That star is finally up in the sky. The world’s greatest Muhammed Ali has left this earth but he
did not leave us empty handed. Ali left us with the knowledge of what it means to be a true
champion. It has to do with so much more than the win lost total. The fact is a true champion will
lose some. Just as Ali lost his tittle, endorsements and his freedom for standing up for what he
believed in. In the great ring of life Ali time and time again got knocked down by ignorance and
prejudice. But he always got back up. When Ali got back up he would swing back at ignorance
with the left hook of knowledge. He would side step away from prejudice and knock it out with
love. Ali was a true champion for change. A true champion from the West End of Louisville. A
true champion who would not approve of how the conditions of the West End are today.
Today we face the same opponent in new trunks. Yes racism still is looking to knock us
down in the best end of the city. But what are we doing to fight back? Where is the mall,
hospitals, movie theaters and lawyers in the West End? What happened to the black owned
business? Why don’t we have Best Buy or an Apple store? Why are we ok with being average? I
wanted to see what my area of the West End’s economical demographic was. I went to
makechangetogether.org a site that is dedicated for the improvement of the West End and Urban
life in the city. I found out that the median income for by beloved neighborhood was only
$24,000. The average for the city is 46,000. Which means if you make below 46,000 you are
technically poor.
I am here to say that there is nothing POOR about my West End. We are doctors and
artist, athletes, and champions. We need to invest in our community. Not just too our children.
But too our up and coming business owners. We need to be the first to give our college kids a
chance. Stop sending our kids to work for someone in St. Matthews or down town. Let do it here.

2. Let’s not create jobs but careers. It’s time to get up West End Louisville. It’s time to be
champions.
