2. こと、の
1. In order to insert a sentence in the another sentence (or add more
expressions), you need to make a sentence into a noun phrase – e.g.
音楽を聞くことが好きです。I like listening to music, セロリを食べることが
できます I can eat celery
2. ことmeans ‘thing’ – e.g. いろいろなことを知っています。I know various
things.
3. ことcan be replaced with の, but note there are exceptions
4. こと can be replaced with のが 好き/上手/きらい/下手です etc.
5. By making a sentence into a noun phrase, this phrase can be a
subject, object and so on (see above example which acts as a
subject of the sentence) – e.g. 朝早く散歩するのは気持ちがいいです。
Walking early in the morning feels good.
6. ことor の can be translated in different ways to fit in with natural
English – i.e. to, -ing, about, things that, that etc
