1. The importance of time OFF
It is More Efficient to Take a Day Off Every Once and a While for me at least. (aside from this blog
post)…I’m taking the day off today.
Believe it or not this is a new concept for me. Don’t get me wrong….I’m still lazy sometimes; but
I’m ALWAYS thinking about work even when I’m off. At least I was in the past. I’m getting better
at not doing this.
Even though I have a job now, I come from the world of business ownership. Specifically from the
world of network marketing and “hard-core” sales type business ownership. I was trained by some
of the most dynamic and passionate sales-people/business owners I’ve ever met. I’m not
bragging…I’m just prefacing a little on why I am a recovering workaholic. These people were
sometimes morally ambiguous…but be careful not to “throw the baby out with the bath water”.
Their moral ambiguity was something that made another type of impression on me that I have,
hopefully, transmuted into something positive for society. These men and women were fierce.
They were a little crazy, but making 50-100k per month is a little crazy. Maybe you gotta be a little
obsessive and odd to get there. I am familiar with the argument that “money isn’t everything”, but
as the lyric of a SilverChair song goes- “I’d like to see you live without it”. This level of income
and insight puts quite an impression on a 21-25 year old man. They instilled a business owner work
ethic in me at a very young age. They forcefully transformed me into someone that had an entirely
different relationship and outlook on “time”. I should actually say they instilled a workaholic’s
work ethic in me.
In any case I have never viewed the weekends internally as weekends. I’ve always viewed them as
time off to get things done. Time off for everyone else (during weekends and holidays), used to
mean that I had some time to “get ahead” when the rest of the populace was being lazy. I would be
remiss if I didn’t admit that this hard core work ethic didn’t serve me at times in my 20′s. It helped
me to be quite the ass-kicker at times. When I ran a mortgage company I laughed at time off, and
experienced positive reinforcement for this behavior in the form of 5 figure bi-weekly checks.
THAT WAS ALOT OF MONEY TO ME!!!!
This workaholic’s work ethic helped me to run a completely independent office in Philadelphia
while making a living selling water filters and nutrition. However, I noticed that this mental state
was actually becoming more detrimental to my overall productivity and <more importantly> my
CREATIVITY. This was especially apparent when I noticed that quality of work and “working
smart” was a better way to live. It turns out your work life can be qualitatively measured as an
inter-related aspect of a greater whole…you just have to be patient/still enough to observe this.
Now I take a day (and a 1/2) off every week. I take every Friday night and Saturday off. I have to
make an effort to not think about my work, or my assistants’ work, or my business, or my new
business ideas on my days off, but I’m getting better at keeping this regiment. Why is this
2. important? It may seem obvious to you…but I am more efficient, brighter, and more crisp when I
decompress for a little time every week. Which is exactly what I’m gonna do right about……now.
