ARCHITECT AS SPATIAL AGENT
ARCHITECT AS SPATIAL AGENT:
Architect as Critical Spatial Thinker /
Investigator / Spokesperson / Catalyst
This particular studio section will focus on a methodology that envisions the Architect as a Spatial Agent. The inhabited environments within
Architecture and Urbanism are shaped by a confluence of political, cultural, and social forces. These forces can act in ways, which collide, overlap, and
even sometimes synergistically intersect. The role of the Architect within this process is one of many agencies contributing sometimes inconsequentially
and sometimes critically in the unfolding of form, space, and environments. Acting as Spatial Agents students will perform in variety of capacities as
critical spatial thinkers, investigators, spokespersons, and catalysts.
The studio is organized according to a series of projects, which are meant to serve as a framework for the deployment of a spatial intervention.
Individual projects aren’t ends in themselves, but are a means to create a context, space, and site in which to envision potential opportunities for
architecture to act on the production of space. Projects will be graded as drafts and students will be encouraged to build upon each of the projects
throughout the semester.

Students will co-opereate with a group or organization that represents or is a part of a broader spectrum of urban innovation taking place within
the city today. Through dialogue with representative partner group students will envision a spatial intervention that expands the aspirations of their
representative constituencies.

ARCHITECT AS SPATIAL AGENT
Project 01
Architect as Critical Spatial Thinker
Manifesto
Flesh out your personal ideals, beliefs and goals by writing statements about who you as a designer on the deepest level. You may wish to brain¬storm
by itemizing your personal beliefs about what is – and is not – important to you as a design professional. Focus specifically on matters related to design.
Be honest.
Project 02
Architect as Investigator
Investigating sites of Urban Innovation
This research will take the form of analysis, discussion, dialogue, and engagement with the public and constituent partners.
Project 03
Architect as Spokesperson
Performative Programming
Performative Programming – Identify and elaborate needs, concerns, dreams, and aspirations of identified constituent partner(s). How can space and
form begin to perform to meet and facilitate these dreams? This will become the basis for a design proposal or actualized intervention or a bit of both.
The instructor will guide students into articulating an evolving Performative Programming concept.
Project 04 ‘semester project’
Architect as Catalyst
Spatial Intervention
As projects evolve the studio will help identify opportunities to bring intervention concepts and realities into the public realm based on the trajectory and
nature of the project. The platforms should be directed strategically towards a specific audience as a part of the strategic/tactical nature of the project
