DIVERSITY
Diversity
Diversity in the workplace goes along with a variety of differences between the people
throughout the business. It may sounds pretty straight forward, but diversity embraces style, age,
race, personality, gender, background, education and much more. People everywhere around you
are different and you will never see anyone the same. With that being said in a work place
culture diversity is necessary to have healthy communication.
Gender plays a big part with diversity, in the workplace, such as Hillary Clinton she had
a lot of gender issues to deal with because she was a female running for a spot people thought
men should only be running for. Everyone gave her such a hard time but she never let that get in
the she continued to do what it would take to help her succeed. A lot of people have their
thoughts on things such as, men being better then what women are which a false statement. A lot
of teachers are females because society as a whole feels like teaching is a female job but, that’s
wrong there are male teachers just not as many which I think is crazy. Anyone could be a teacher
not just a female and not just a male. While doing research I came across a lot of good
information about genders in the workplace. Way back then females where not paid enough for
the work that they did which was unfair. In a article that I looked over they said “Women have
4
DIVERSITY
made great strides in the workplace, but inequality persists. On average in 2010, women only
made 77 cents to every dollar a man earned. There’s still a gender gap that needs to be rectified.”
This photo gives you a brief description on how they genders was not treated the same because
of their gender which, in my eyes was a big stereotype and it shouldn’t have happen. It also
shows that men have a better chance at getting the job just because they have higher power, and
also white female’s have a better opportunity at getting a job then what an African American
could. Still today females struggle to find jobs and it’s insane there are so many jobs out in the
world but still hard to find one. still today there are job opportunities that many could apply for
but it really depends on who the person is if you get the job. No one should be judge by their
gender because you never know who it makes that person feel. In a workplace gender is
something that you should consider, you shouldn’t
have all men or, all women because what happens if
a custom comes in and wants to talk with a female?
Well if there are no females in the work place then
what do you do? You wouldn’t be able to do
anything because it will be too late but, the custom
would be disappointed because you could not help
them in anyway. You wouldn’t want to lose business over things like that because then there will
be no business. Considering gender is a huge thing with diversity you should have an equal
amount of both genders.
When you see someone in a wheelchair what do you think? There unable to do
anything. Well guess aging disability also plays a very important role in the workplace
community, people who are disable get looked over because they can’t do as much as a
5
DIVERSITY
person who is able. But honestly that’s just another stereotype, when people with a
disability are out, people look at them like they are not
even human and I know that feeling is frustrating. In a
work place you always see someone looking like why are
they here? They can’t do anything to help. In When
people with a disability rather its them in a wheel chair,
being blind, no leg, no arm or whatever the situation may
be they get looked over for jobs because, the business feels
like they would be no help to the company. I think
everyone should be offered a chance never look over someone because you don’t know
anything about them, you just going off the way that they appear when you see them. In
the work place I feel that should be all types of people because diversity is key and you
don’t want the same people. Disability people should be included as well because, when
someone else just like them comes in they will feel more welcome and would have
someone to go and talk to who’s just like them. Cara Williams said “Disabilities
experienced by those in the labor force vary. For example, pain was cited by 74% of
persons with disabilities, mobility by 56%, and agility by 53%. Hearing was a disability
for about 25%, while 16% cited Psychiatric disability, and 14% a learning disability
(Chart A).” this chart shows the different type of disability’s between men and women
and it’s kind of hard to believe what it’s reading off. You would think that it wouldn’t be
this way but people are all different and you can’t do anything but except that and live
with it. Not judge them off of physical charteristics because as an employee, boos or
whatever it may be you should put yourself in their shoes and see what it feels like to
6
DIVERSITY
have to go through what they have to just because they have a disability. While
researching I found out that people who have disabilities are educated more then what a
normal person is. This is because they had to teach themselves ways to make them better
just because they have a disability doesn’t mean they just have to stop and never do
anything again. This is very big in the work place just because there physical
appearance.” Among employees with disabilities, about 73% (595,000) worked full time
(30 hours or more per week). One-third of the part-timers gave their condition or
disability as the reason they worked part time. Another 30% cited going to school,
business conditions, or inability to find work with more hours.” Says Cara Williams.
Without diversity in the workplace think about how things would be. Nobody would be
able to learn new things if they are all working with the same kind of people, you want to
be diverse so that things are different so that everyone can learn new ideas which could
make the business a better success as a whole. Having different people of all types is
what makes you stronger and with different people creating many different things,
everyone is feeding off of that and that could help the people come up with new things
that they have not yet came across. Creating new thoughts and new ideas is always cool
because, you never know what someone else has to say. To be having a disability only
makes you stronger and in a work place that gives others the opportunity to learn off of
that person.
For this study, the authors interviewed 35 mothers within four rural Appalachian
counties. All mothers had children living at home at the time of the interview and were
receiving public assistance. The authors found that all of the mothers wanted to be good
mothers. Being a good mother was characterized in many ways: raising children with good
7
DIVERSITY
values, providing for children economically and emotionally, etc. Additionally, the mothers
discussed how difficult it was to raise children while trying to meet work requirements of
welfare reform. For example, one mother said “Sometimes it’s hard to decide. Do I go there
and work or do I stay home with her [6-year-old daughter] when she’ begging me. She
needs me. (Andrea, mother of one)” (p.137). The authors conclude that the current social
policies have created a “parenting dilemma for women in rural Appalachian communities”
(p. 140).
Diversity has its ups and its downs, I say this because, not every single workplace has
diversity, not every single work place has different people from different race, or people with a
disability, or different kinds of genders. People are people and should not be look over no matter
who they are. These things use to happen many, many years ago and to see today that things like
this is still taking place is very crazy. Why can’t we except people as who they are? Why should
they be treated different because of who they are? Josh Greenberg said “Perceptual, cultural and
language barriers need to be overcome for diversity programs to succeed. Ineffective
communication of key objectives results in confusion, lack of teamwork, and low morale.”
Diversity takes communication in order for it to happen people must communicate and talk to
one another for it to happen and take place, as a team the business as a whole should want to be
diverse because you never know who may come into the workplace and you be able to help
anyone that comes walking in that door. When I hear the word diversity, I think about different
people who look different, sound different, different race, different gender, people who are able,
people who have disabilities and things like that. That is diverse to me everywhere I go I see
people who are different, it’s not always someone who looks like me. For an example on the
University of Kentucky’s campus you see all kinds of diverse things and it’s really cool on how
8
DIVERSITY
they show it. Everyone is diverse in their own little way you may not see it but, it’s their you just
have to get to know that person to understand how they are different. Diversity should be a rude
all workplaces must show diversity throughout the business, that sound corny but I think
everyone should be able to get that opportunity that others do. So never Judge give someone a
chance never look down on them because of who they are, they can’t help being who they are, its
life and people should not be treated any different. Everyone should have the equal rights and
one should be treated unfair. Diversity should be everywhere not just in a few places, when you
step outside your door you will see someone different then you and you will know that they are
diverse they are showing off who they are. Diversity can be shown in many ways such as the
music you listen to, how you do your hair, the clothes you ware, the food you eat and other
things as well. People never realize that they show there diversity but, people could look at you
and see that you are diverse just by your clothing. Gender, racial issues, and disability are all
major roles in diversity. People who have disabilities should not be looked over, people who
have racial issues should not be that way because no one should be judged by the color of their
skin, it’s not fair at all. Your gender is what you are and who you are there should not just be all
males or all females in the work place you should have a mixture of both that way everyone is
comfortable and feels welcome throughout the workplace at all times. Do you think people
should be judge off what they look like in order to work in a workplace? The answer to that
question should always be no because, nobody is the same but everyone should be treated with
equal respect because in the workplace environment it takes people to work together in order to
get the job done and stay on top of things you need a hard working team with people who are
diverse, that way everyone can bring something to the table to help the workplace create new
ideas. We the people need to realize that diversity is a gift and it has beauty.
