In December 2020, AASHTO shared the news that the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) launched a $5-million demonstration program known as Regional Infrastructure Accelerators. The program establishes accelerators around the United States that will be managed by the USDOT Build America Bureau and will provide communities with a faster path to completing infrastructure projects through unique financing methods. In addition to providing access to innovative financing methods, the accelerators will help local governments with project planning. The accelerators will also develop a project pipeline for investments that will improve transportation in communities and provide access to technical assistance. Accelerators are the newest efforts of the USDOT to improve infrastructure investment in rural America.
