MANAGERS love to tinker with their
line-ups for cup ties and that makes
life difficult when it comes to
tipping Capital One Cup matches.
But Derby manager Paul Clement
has a strong squad at his disposal
and can make wholesale changes
for tonight’s battle with
Portsmouth without
weakening his team.
Plucky Pompey will be
no pushover after they
began their League two
campaign with a 3-0 win
at home to Dagenham.
Fratton Park’s a real
throwback to the days when
footballers were expected to
earn their money by turning in a
proper day’s graft rather than
being satisfied with a step
over here and a clever
flick there.
New boss Paul Cook has
re-ignited that passion
but Derby are a top bet
at 17/20 with Ladbrokes
while Darren Bent, an
unused sub in the 0-0 draw
at Bolton, is 6/4 to score.

CHELSEA first-team doctor Eva
Carneiro had her future plunged into
fresh doubt last night after being
stripped of key duties following her
public bust-up with Jose Mourinho.
She will keep her title but it is un-
derstood she will no longer be on the
bench for home or away games, start-
ing with Sunday’s trip to Manchester
City. Carneiro will also not be
allowed into the team’s hotel and will
not be involved in training sessions.
The demotion came two days after
Mourinho vented his anger at his
medical team following the 2-2 draw
also insisted he knew that Belgium
international Hazard did not require
treatment as he was just tired and
not badly injured.
Fans have backed the Gibraltar-
born physician and in a move which
will have further enraged the Chel-
sea hierarchy, she took to Facebook
to thank the ‘general public for their
overwhelming support’.
The aftermath of her fall-out with
Mourinho means Carneiro may now
find her role at the club untenable.
with Swansea at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues boss became animated
when his team – already without
goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after
he was sent off for a professional foul
– were temporarily reduced to nine
men when Eden Hazard was forced
to leave the pitch following treatment
from Carneiro.
Mourinho exchanged heated words
with the doctor on the touchline and
branded his medical staff ‘impulsive
and naive’ in his post-match press
conference, adding they needed to
‘understand the game’. Mourinho
She is expected to be exiled to the
Premier League champions’ training
headquarters at Cobham but will
only treat injured players in the
club’s medical facilities.
A club spokesman declined to elab-
orate and said: ‘We do not comment
on internal staffing matters’.
Carneiro, who joined the Blues in
February 2009, was appointed to her
current role two years later by then-
manager Andre Villas-Boas.
She has also worked for the British
Olympic Medical Institute, England
Women’s Football and UK Athletics.

The world governing body said
the re-testing of anti-doping

World Championships in Helsinki
and Osaka had turned up 32
adverse findings from 28 athletes.
A statement said: ‘A majority of

Mourinho attempted to
keep his counsel after the
match yet could not help let
slip that he felt officials had
‘punished’ his side.
However, the FA rejected
Chelsea’s appeal yesterday,
meaning Courtois’ one-
match ban stands.
His absence means Asmir
Begovic is in line for his full
Chelsea debut at the Etihad
Stadium on Sunday.
United now expect to keep De Gea
Manchester United officials
are reportedly confident David de
Gea will still be at Old Trafford
when the transfer deadline passes.
The Spain goalkeeper is a target
for Real Madrid and a move
appeared close when Louis van
Gaal left him out for Saturday’s
season-opening victory over
Tottenham at Old Trafford.
However, United are adamant De
Gea can only leave if Madrid pay a
world-record fee for a goalkeeper
or agree to let Sergio Ramos move
in the opposite direction and
neither option appears likely.
Ex-United keeper Peter
Schmeichel wants Hugo Lloris
from Spurs rather than Ajax No.1
Jasper Cillessen – who has history
with Van Gaal at international
level – to come in if De Gea does
go. He said: ‘I think [Van Gaal]
doesn’t trust [Cillessen] 100 per
cent and if De Gea goes I’d love
Lloris to come to United.
De Gea is in United’s Champions
League squad for the two-legged
play-off against Club Brugge.
‘I would never be under the orders of this
Dutchman. I’d never leave if I was Pedro because if
he goes there he would no longer be a footballer. ’
Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov, who played under Louis van Gaal at the
Nou Camp, is adamant Manchester United target Pedro would be better off
avoiding a link-up with his former manager
