TWENTY-EIGHT
athletes have been
suspended for historic
doping offences.
The IAAF, the world
governing body under
fire in the wake of
allegations of
widespread doping,
said the re-testing of
samples from the 2005
and 2007 World
Championships in
Helsinki and Osaka
had turned up 32
adverse findings from
28 athletes.
In the wake of
accusations by
The Sunday Times and
German broadcaster
ARD that a blind eye
was turned to potential
mass doping, the IAAF
have come out fighting
but insisted they could
not name the 28
athletes concerned
“due to the legal
process”.
The revelations come
before this year’s World
Championships, which
begin in China a week
on Saturday.
The IAAF said: “A
large majority are
retired, some have
already been
sanctioned and very
few remain active in
sport. The IAAF are
provisionally
suspending them and
none will be competing
in Beijing.”
The IAAF said that,
from April this year,
they used the latest
anti-doping technology
to re-test samples.
They pointed out this
commenced well before
the latest allegations
and follows on from a
first round of
re-analysis of urine
samples in 2012.
Medals will be
reallocated where
necessary should
doping offences be
confirmed.

Robson’s plea to De Gea
BRYAN ROBSON has urged
David de Gea to emulate
Cristiano Ronaldo and stay
with Manchester United for
one final glorious season.
Like De Gea, Ronaldo
wanted to move to Real
Madrid in 2008 but was
persuaded by Sir Alex
Ferguson to stay for one
more year and played a huge
part in United winning the
Premier League, World Club
Cup, League Cup and
reaching the final of the
Champions League in the
2008-09 season.
Former United captain
Robson believes De Gea,
left, should set aside his
ambition to move to the
Bernabeu and reclaim his
place as No1 at Old Trafford
for the final year of his
contract.
He has been left out of the
side by manager Louis van
Gaal, who believes he has
been distracted by Real’s
interest. “You have to be a

CHELSEA doctor Eva Carneiro
has been relieved of her touchline
duties after Jose Mourinho’s rant
about his medical staff’s lack of
understanding of the game during
the 2-2 draw with Swansea.
Carneiro, 41, will retain her title of
first-team doctor but will no longer sit on
the bench during matches, attend training
games or report to the team hotel ahead of
fixtures.
Mourinho was angry that Carneiro rushed
to treat Eden Hazard when Chelsea were
already down to 10 men late in Saturday’s
match at Stamford Bridge.
If the player had been allowed to shake
off his injury, it would have meant he was
