HerbGoronkin
t some point in the final ascent of the rim-to-rim-
to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon, Herb
Goronkin convinced his companion to forge ahead. The
pain in his leg had slowed his gait to a hobble as the
light dwindled. Then the rain started, a deluge that quick-
ly turned the trail into a gully. Rocks began to tumble by,
forcing him to take refuge on a narrow ledge off the path.
“I thought I was going to die,” Goronkin says. Instead,
he persevered, despite the dark, the rubble and what
would prove to be a pinched nerve. He emerged, caked
in mud, over the crest into the beam of headlights. One
hiker had remained behind in a car to transport him back
to their campsite.

top safety pick
The driver and passenger restraint systems in the Taurus/Sable consist of complex operations
that go far beyond the safety belts and air bags, in addition to the availability of Electronic
Stability Control (ESC).
Vehicle Body Structure
Features of the rigid vehicle body are designed to help protect the occupant
during a crash. The structure also includes the following features:
1. Door beams attached to door frame. Beams within the door help
protect during side impacts and help manage frontal-impact forces.
2. Front bumper plate helps reduce crash forces and promotes a
more even collapse of the energy-absorbing structures.
3. Tunnel rails support front rail and engine loads in a front
crash to provide passenger compartment integrity.
4. Octagonal front frame rails distribute forces.
5. Front structure tripod design channels front crash
forces upward and downward into a high-strength
steel ring of protection around and away from the
passenger compartment.
6. Kick-up crossmember provides additional cross-vehicle
transfer of load in side-impact crash.
7. Rear rails designed to manage the forces of a rear impact.
8. Patent-pending Collapsible Driveshaft (AWD) controls
absorption of crash energy and helps prevent driveshaft
intrusion into passenger compartment.

fast facts
Five Ford vehicles have
earned the Insurance
Institute for
Highway
Safety “Top
Safety Pick”
rating:
Lincoln MKX
Ford Taurus
Ford Edge
Volvo XC90 Mercury Sable
• The volume of Ford vehicles affected by safety-related recalls dropped last
year by more than two-thirds over the previous year.
• Eighteen Ford vehicles earned five-star ratings in all crash test categories
from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Frontal Restraints System
9. Restraints Control Module (RCM), a small
computer module, signals deployment of
appropriate restraint devices.
10. Crash sensors monitor vehicle’s crash pulse
and provide input to the RCM.
11. Dual-stage air bags enhance head, neck
and chest protection.
12. Collapsible steering column absorbs
energy.
13. Knee impact management system: an
energy-absorbing knee bolster and
lower instrument panel structure to help
manage impact to the femur.
14. Safety belt buckle pretensioner tightens the
safety belt during early stage of crash.
15. Multi-load limiter safety belt retractor adjusts
force of retraction based on the size of
occupant.
16. Seat track position sensor detects seat position and tells
RCM whether to deploy single or dual-stage air bag.
17. Occupant Classification System determines whether front passenger seat is empty, or contains a large or small
passenger.
Side Restraints System
18. Crash sensors that monitor change in pressure within each front door cavity.
19. Side air bag
20. Ford Safety Canopy (Side Air Curtain with Rollover Protection) provides front and rear occupants with head protection and
containment during side impact or rollover.
21. Class-exclusive SPACE (Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement) Architecture includes a cross-car beam that runs between
the door frames, strengthening each bodyside.
“[Taurus/Sable] give
us a large family
car that people
can choose and
know that they are
buying the best
vehicle for safety
for their family.”

IIHS president
