The Bodman Foundation of New York City created
the Vilas Scholarship in 1976 to honor 1913 St.
Lawrence University graduate Homer A. Vilas.
Homer had an extensive business career working as
a financier and corporate director on Wall Street.
Previous to his career, he served his country in
World War II in the US Army.
During his lifetime, Homer made donations to
several nonprofit organizations as well as St.
Lawrence.
He also served on the school’s board of directors
from 1955 to 1968 and has been memorialized with
a campus building bearing his name.

The Vilas Scholarship is offered to St. Lawrence
University undergraduate students attending the
school to receive a liberal arts degree in preparation
for a business career.
Recipients receive a full academic scholarship. In
addition to the monetary aspect, a Vilas Scholar also
receives numerous networking opportunities with St.
Lawrence business alumni.

Michael Keefe Gorman was a St. Lawrence
University Vilas Scholar when he attended the
school for his Bachelor of Arts in Economics,
graduating in 1984.
