Pedagogy-vs-Andragogy.pptx
1. Andragogy vs.
Pedagogy
INTRODUCTION
The word "pedagogue" comes from the
Greek language meaning "to lead or guide.“
The term 'pedagogy' involves "teaching or
training the young in habits of thinking and
acting.“Andragogy means "leading the
elders." It believes that adults are capable of
developing new ideas and solving problems.
They have the ability to think independently
and act creatively. It focuses on helping
individuals become more independent and
creative thinkers.
2. Definition of Pedagogy
Definition of Andragogy
Pedagogy tends to be used as an umbrella term
that refers to the art and science of teaching and
learning. In most contexts, we can use the term to
refer to teaching children and learning across all
ages: and adults.
The term ‘Andragogy‘ is old, dating back to at
least 1833 in Germany, but is most widely known
to be connected to Malcolm Knowles, who in the
1970s and 1980s proposed that adult learners
have unique needs, requiring a unique approach
to adult education (Blondy, 2007; Knowles, 1984.
5. Conclusion
The fact that active training is used in
andragogy, the role of the learner increases
as opposed to pedagogy which is passive.
In conclusion, the role of the learner is
greater in andragogy than in pedagogy.
This is due to the fact that a learner is
perceived to have more experience,
knowledge and skills.
