9. StayingPositive
My friend Maggie Mason is a good example of someone
that can stay positive during incredible trials and hard-
ships. Maggie is one of my best friends and we consider
each other family. If you look at her, you wouldn’t know
she suffers from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). She is the
sweetest, happiest person I know. She is kind and patient
and I’m so grateful for her example of being positive in my
life.
Maggie was married for 3 months when her husband Brad
and her were in a fatal car accident. Brad died instantly
and Maggie’s fate wasn’t much better off. She was in a coma
for 3 weeks after the accident and wasn’t able to attend her
husband’s funeral. Any organ that could explode and kill
her was removed. She had people praying for her daily that
she would survive the horrendous accident. Maggie’s re-
covery was miraculous. She was able to talk and walk when
doctors thought she would never be able to feed herself.
Maggie doesn’t remember much about the accident or the
weeks shortly after but she has the tracheotomy scare to
remind her of her loss.
Word of the accident reached one of her friends from
home, Nate Mason. Nate and Maggie had dated before
he left on his mission to Germany. While Nate was on his
mission Maggie was married to Brad. When Nate found
out about her tragic loss he reached out to her. Nate re-
turned to their hometown in New Mexico and was happy
to reconnect with Maggie. Within a year Maggie and Nate
were married.
Maggie has had to endure loss at such a young age. Mag-
gie lost her mom at 8 years old to cancer. Maggie’s dad
remarried and she regards her stepmother as her mother.
To a growing child losing a parent is devastating.
Maggie never feels less than. She is incredibly grateful for
her life and her family. Currently Maggie and Nate have
2 boys and live in Pleasanton, California. She is always
so happy and positive through it all. She never wallows
in the pain of her loses. She is always so upbeat and
fun to be around. I love being with Maggie because she
makes me put things in perspective. Whenever she says
something out of context or something that doesn’t make
sense she’ll jokingly blame it on her TBI. She is happy
and funny and her laughter is contagious.
Maggie would never blame Heavenly Father for her
trials. She is grateful for the plan of salvation and the
opportunity to see those she loves so much again.
What do you do when life throws you a trial? Do you blame Heavenly Father? Do you ask “why
me”? Do you think your trial could’ve been avoided if you had just done something different-
ly? These questions aren’t the best way to approach a tough life situation. The best way to approach
life is to stay positive.
