The Center Gallery at Fordham University is pleased to present Arctic Subtext by Subhankar
Banerjee. Arctic Subtext is a selection of work from Banerjee’s ongoing project titled Land as Home.
The photographs were taken during his numerous journeys in the Arctic. The images are of the
sublime and beautiful wilderness, the abundant wildlife, and the indigenous culture of the Arctic.
Latent in these images, however, are signs of the Arctic’s vulnerability, which are also documented in
the accompanying captions that have generated controversy. Traditionally thought of as the last great
unspoiled territory on earth, the Arctic is revealed as the site of environmental degradation, climate
change, toxic migration, and the erosion of human rights of the northern indigenous communities.
Subhankar Banerjee, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fordham University, is an artist, writer and
activist. His photographs focus on indigenous human rights and land conservation issues and have
been instrumental in ongoing conservation efforts of the ecologically vulnerable areas of the Arctic.
They have been shown extensively in Europe and the United States and will be shown at the 18th
Biennale of Sydney. He is the founder of ClimateStoryTellers.org, “a gathering place for stories on
global warming.” He recently edited an anthology titled Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point.
The exhibit’s opening reception will be prefaced by an open-panel discussion on environmental
issues with Subhankar Banerjee and Robert Emmet Hernan. Former Assistant Attorney General in the
Environmental Protection Bureau for New York State, Mr. Hernan is the author of This Borrowed
Earth: Lessons from the 15 Worst Environmental Disasters Around the World and publisher
of IrishEnvironment.com, an online resource for environmental matters in Ireland.
