Textbook: Debate the Issues
In this class you will learn strategies for being successful in communication and debate. You will develop
specific speaking, reading, and writing skills while learning about interesting topics. In addition, you will learn
strategies for doing research and dealing with concepts and English vocabulary related to your major. Most
importantly you will learn how to effectively present yourself and advocate solutions to global problems.
Evaluation: Attendance and Participation 50%
Homework 30%
Final exam 20%
1. Attendance is very important. If you miss 7 classes that is an automatic F.
Some absences may be excused (military training, hospitalization overnight,
death in the family) but it may still affect your final grade.
If you miss a class, you must give me a university stamped and approved
certificate of absence the next class.
2. Arrive on time. Two times late = One absence
If you are more than 15 minutes late = One absence
3. Bring all materials to every class. (textbook, pen/pencil, paper)
4. Communicate in English only.
5. Submit all homework on time. Late homework will not be accepted.
6. Participation is essential for improving your English skills. Be active in class.
Try your best in all activities. Mistakes can help you learn. Trying and making a
mistake is much better than being silent.
7. Cell phones should be turned off or at least put on vibrate mode. Do not talk or
send messages on your phone during class time.
