To Freddie, my sweet parrot, who came to me unable to fly. One day, as I neared the
completion of this book, she took her first real flight. High above the trees she flew,
squealing with delight. Fly well, my baby, be free.
To my father, who gave me life and the gift that has made it possible for me to fly. He
was perched and ready for his final flight when I started his project. We miss him
now. Thanks, Dad. Fly well and be free.
My father was riding on the bus home from his first-grade class with his mother, and
he said to her with all sincerity, “Mother, isn’t it funny how you write a word from
left to right and you read it from right to left?” After repeating first grade, he went on
to be a brilliant mechanical and electrical engineer with assignments that took our
family all over the world.
Like my father, I, too, read each word from right to left and then turn it around in
my mind to give it new meaning in my life. I have my own secret language. Thanks
to my soul, I realized I was given the gift of witnessing how miraculous life can be
when one’s relationship with soul is strong and alive.
I got through school labeled severely learning disabled (dyslexic) and brilliant. It’s an
enormous effort for me to read a book, so I have read very few, and spelling is next to
impossible. I got fired from a job for spelling the word schedual wrong just one too
many times, and my husband laughs at the growcery list taped to the clawzit door
and has learned to be very creative when interpreting my instructions.
Yet I have written this book. With my Soul Partners, I’ve achieved what I once
thought was beyond my ability. My soul said to me one morning, “Stop making
excuses. You have shown so many others the way to their wisdom and power. Now
strap on your wings and let’s fly!”
Now I fly high on the wings of my soul, squealing with delight. I hope I have the
pleasure of seeing you on one of those flights.

Foreword
For me, the soul has always epitomised a person’s essence,
the core of one’s human spirit. When I look around and see
how our past in South Africa has influenced our view of how we
see ourselves, I realise how much damage has been caused, how
the human spirit has been crushed.
In Africa, people of colour have struggled to maintain their
self-worth when society has treated them as less worthy and less
valuable. They have been dismissed as not being important,
dare I say without essence. Our people have been in turmoil for
so long in their fight for recognition, in their struggle for
human dignity. And although it is sad to admit, their fight still
continues.
In President Mandela’s exquisite words, “I have cherished
the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons
live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an
ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But it needs be. It
is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
It’s sad to see how people are abandoning their principles to
obtain wealth and success. After achieving all they’ve set out to
do, they realise they have not accomplished anything because
they’ve had to lose themselves and sell their souls in the process.
In these times, it is indeed necessary for us to have people
like Maxine Jones inspiring us to stretch our wings and fly,
teaching us how to use the power of our soul to unleash the
tremendous potential within us.

Introduction
People increasingly tell me there’s something critical missing
from their lives. They ask for my help in finding it. They name
a variety of symptoms: no time, no energy, achievement
without fulfillment, no purpose or meaningful direction, no
personal clarity, no satisfaction, a feeling of being disconnected
from society and the community. They say life is about making
it through the day. They’re caught in the hurry syndrome. They
feel out of control with no way out.
The symptoms aren’t specific to gender, age, socioeconomic
status, race, culture or religion. It seems no one is immune from
the pain and frustration of this phenomenon.
One afternoon, I received six phone calls from clients all
wanting appointments for very similar reasons. “What’s wrong
with my life?” they asked me. All of these people were
professionals whose lives, on the surface, looked ideal and
pulled together.
The sixth conversation especially caught my attention. The
caller said she wanted to talk about “the elephant in the living
room” – a concern so big, it was getting in her way. She listed
her symptoms and told me she’d been searching for something
but wasn’t sure what it was.
“I’ve tried it all. I’ve added things to my life and I’ve
subtracted things, and I still want more. I still feel empty. I need
to do something of value, something with purpose, something
that expresses all that I am. I want to make a difference.”
17. xvi M e e t Yo u r S o u l
Without taking a breath, she continued: “By the way, I
heard a story on the news today. They were talking about the
power and impact soul has been having in people’s lives.”
What is the soul?
Everyone has a soul. It’s individual and unique, not shared
by anyone else. It can’t be taken or used or duplicated. The soul
just is. It silently works behind the scenes and doesn’t blatantly
interfere but does make its presence and purpose known
throughout our lives.
In childhood, your soul was your invisible friend. As
children, we instinctively know how to connect with soul, just
like we know how to eat, walk, talk and breathe. Soul
development is natural and instinctual.
But it’s also natural for us to doubt what we can’t see and
touch. When your senses can’t distinguish this piece of you
that’s invisible, you ignore it and think it’s your imagination or
name it something else.
Somewhere along the line, you were probably even taught
to ignore your soul. You learned it’s taboo to communicate with
unseen entities that aren’t God, and that doing so conflicts with
your religion and might even be considered crazy.
That’s because the soul and its powers have been
misunderstood by so many for so long. Your soul is not a higher
being. It’s not God. It’s a part of you, just like your intellect or
your physical strength. Communicating with your soul actually
helps you become more in touch with your spiritual side. It
helps solidify and strengthen your religious beliefs.
Because our society doesn’t actively pursue a relationship
with the soul, our experience with it is often passive. We catch
glimpses of it unexpectedly and infrequently.
Your soul is engaged when you’re doing something that feels
18. M e e t Yo u r S o u l xvii
so right and so meaningful that you slip into “the zone.” You
could be playing a sport, making music, writing a poem, taking
a walk, rocking your baby, praying, negotiating a business deal,
performing volunteer work, or spending time on a hobby like
woodworking or scrapbooking. Time seems to stand still, and
you feel a pure bliss that words can’t describe. You know at that
moment you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
If these things can happen when you’re not even trying,
think about how powerful a partner your soul can be in your
life if you’re working together!
The soul is your greatest resource of power, freedom, love
and fulfillment. It just needs to be encouraged to perform and
challenged to take action. It’s patiently waiting to be explored.
How I came to knowmy soul
This book began one evening 25 years ago in the dead of
winter on a bus in Chicago. I was riding CTA No. 151 en route
to my home on the north side. My nose was pressed against the
icy window, and I was staring out at the gray, ice-covered lake.
My mind was going 100 miles an hour. I was sorting through
my day as an account manager at a Michigan Avenue
advertising agency.
Somewhere in the haze, I heard a distant voice in my head.
It came more into my awareness, and I turned my attention to
it and listened until it became clear. It was a voice I’d been
hearing since my childhood, and it was definitely trying to get
my attention.
I took a couple of long, deep breaths and focused on the
voice, and my whole orientation changed from heavy, dark
stress and chaos into a calming quiet. I closed my eyes and felt a
deep, comforting peace. I felt warm and light. My mind and
19. xviii M e e t Yo u r S o u l
heart were open and free. The voice came to me this time with
softness. My eyes filled with tears, my heart filled with love and
I listened to the voice of my soul.
I sat thinking about how I loved it when my soul connected
with me. It would happen in an instant and seemed to come
out of nowhere and stay for just a couple of minutes. The feeling
was always the same: a warm, deep peace, followed by a wave of
joy and lightness that filled my heart and washed away the
heaviness, concerns and urgency that dominated my everyday
life. Then a message would follow, and often it was about my
family or friends. The message would put me at ease and dissolve
any worry or conflict that was troubling me. The harmony in
my heart helped me ease my judgments about myself.
My thoughts that day stretched far beyond everyday survival
and struggle to a new purpose: creating and living my life with
joy by contributing to the happiness of others. At that moment, I
asked my soul what I needed to do to have a connection more
often. I asked for guidance and help to find a way to connect and
communicate every day. If my soul would just show me how,
then I could share that knowledge with others.
Since then, I’ve made it my life’s work to support other
people in recognizing their soul connection and awakening
communication with this special part of themselves. This book
tells the stories of some of the people whose experiences I’ve
witnessed firsthand.
Somanymiracles
As a personal and professional coach since 1982, I’ve worked
with individual clients as well as large groups in corporate
America. Whether the client is a homemaker, an artist, a Coca-
Cola executive or an Olympic athlete, that person’s soul has
20. M e e t Yo u r S o u l xix
something to say. Unlocking that hidden dialogue changes a
person’s life forever.
When I decided to write this book, I asked people to send
me feedback on what they had learned from my seminars and
private sessions on communicating with the soul, how this
information had affected them, and how they use the
information today in their personal and professional lives.
The response was overwhelming. I received more than 1,000
pages of breathtaking and heartwarming stories. People said
they were thrilled I was writing a book because they could use it
to share information about soul connection with their spouses,
friends and family members. I have included some of their
stories in this book, although I’ve changed their names and
circumstances to protect their privacy. Among those stories:
• Angelica and her family were perplexed that her
doctors couldn’t figure out what was making her ill. A
consultation with her soul provided the answer.
• Sandy was hesitant about accepting a promotion and
didn’t know why. Communicating with her soul
helped her find meaning in her life.
• Samuel, at age 79, wanted to know how to accept
death. He consulted with his soul and instead learned
how to accept life.
• Frances was too shy to make friends or work in a job
that involved talking to people. She was afraid she’d be
alone the rest of her life. Her soul helped her relocate
her inner strength and courage.
21. xx M e e t Yo u r S o u l
• Tamara, at age 19, had become worn and broken, and
she ran away because she was afraid she couldn’t live
up to the expectations of those around her. She
enlisted her soul as a confidante and learned to
appreciate herself and quit pushing away those who
loved her.
How to use this book
In the book, I have likened the development of your soul
connection to the process of building a house. In dream
analysis, a house symbolizes “self.” By developing a partnership
with your soul, you’re developing your concept of self.
In the “how-to” chapter of each section, you’ll find a set of
instructions for each of four steps:
1) Develop a plan.
2) Clear away obstacles.
3) Move forward.
4) Fine-tune.
Connecting with your soul can lead you to peace, joy and
an open heart. How you get there depends on how much time
you can devote to it. Your results also will depend, in part, on
your soul’s direction and purpose. Keep this book and consult it
at different points in your life to continue your growth.
What you can hope to achieve
This book is about approaching life in a whole different way.
At home, connecting with your soul can strengthen family
dynamics, encourage resolution of longstanding conflict, and
open the door to greater communication, connection and
intimacy. At work, soul connection can lead to a greater
understanding of co-workers, supervisors, employees, partners,
22. M e e t Yo u r S o u l xxi
clients and friends. In life, soul connection can lead to tolerance,
patience, cooperation and healing that can change the way
people interact and can affect the way the world operates. The
potential is unlimited.
Once you meet your soul, you can awaken the power to
achieve any of these things. Then it’s easy to stretch your wings
and fly!

1 Preparing for
Meeting Your Soul
For many of you, the soul is still a mystery.
You might be interested in knowing more about your
soul, but you’re not sure how to do it. I will guide you
through. In this book, I will teach you where and how to find
your soul, and I’ll show you how to use this connection to
make profound changes in your life and your work. You’ll learn
about four foundational principles that ensure and strengthen
continuous connection with your soul:
• Defining your soul.
• Remembering your soul.
• Personifying your soul.
• Merging with your soul.
I will teach you how to open space for your soul in your
daily life and give you exercises to strengthen and vary your
experiences with your soul to help the relationship grow.
You’ll learn how to open your heart and experience the
purpose and power of merging with your soul. You’ll get to
know your soul’s passions and pleasures, and you’ll learn how
to incorporate your soul into your everyday life.
I’ll teach you how to make a clear intention, one of the
most powerful tools you can use in developing a relationship
with your soul. An intention involves stating exactly what you
want and how you plan to make it happen, as well as following
26. M e e t Yo u r S o u l 3
those statements with actions that support your goal.
Part of making a clear intention is being open to possibilities
you haven’t considered, maybe even something outside the
realm of your knowledge and experience.
To illustrate the importance of being open to possibilities,
remember the old story about the man who was caught in a
flood. He was standing on the roof of his house to keep out of
the rising water. He prayed, “God, please save me! I am not
ready to die!” A man came by in a rowboat and yelled to him,
“Get in the boat and I will take you to safety!” The man yelled
back, “No thanks, go ahead! God will save me.” Water started
lapping at the man’s feet, and he clung to his chimney and
continued to pray to God to save him. A helicopter came by
and lowered a rope to him. The man again refused rescue and
the helicopter flew on. Soon the man was swept into the river
and he drowned. When he got to God, he asked, “Lord, why
didn’t you save me?” God replied, “I sent you a boat and a
helicopter. What more was I supposed to do?”
Finally, I’ll teach you that you have a powerful partner
inside of you, and tapping into that partnership can truly
enhance your life. That partner is your soul.

2 Angelica in the Hospital
A Case Study on Miraculous Healing
Ibecame aware of a profound need for soul connection and
communication while I was training to be a nurse in 1974.
At the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, nursing students
were assigned to perform basic care on three patients each week.
We would visit each patient four times in that week and spend
45 minutes each visit. On this particular week, the hospital was
less full than usual and I had only one patient, a 32-year-old
woman admitted for testing because she was having difficulty
breathing.
When Imet with Angelica, she sat alone on the bed, looking
exhausted and depressed. She was scheduled for her final tests that
morning, and earlier examinations had given no clear indication of
what was wrong. She had been in the hospital for five days. She
told me she was confused and scared.
I asked her whether she had spoken to her soul about her
situation to seek help and clarity. She looked directly into my
eyes and asked, with total sincerity, “What can my soul do for
me that the doctors and God can’t do?”
She had no idea who her soul was or how it could guide her
in this crisis or in the future. But she was willing to make the
connection with her soul and asked whether I could help her
right then and there.
28. M e e t Yo u r S o u l 5
I asked her to close her eyes and follow my instructions. We
did a specific breathing technique to help her receive her soul’s
strength, created visualization to give her soul form, set a clear
intention to give her soul direction, and developed a unique
personification that represented her soul so she would be able to
recognize it.We made the connection through her heart so she
would know her soul as love and peace. Then she opened her eyes.
She was overwhelmed and delighted. The light was
streaming from her eyes, strength returned to her voice and she
was anxiously asking for more. I explained that communication
with her soul would be the next part and that it’s sometimes
hard to understand the unique language of the soul at first but I
would be there to help her.
Angelica closed her eyes again and the connection with her
soul was instant. She stated her question and her purpose for
the question. We then set up a way for her soul to communicate
with her, which was to be through visual symbols. Angelica had
a love for angels, so we used the symbol of an angel as a way for
her soul to communicate and connect with her. Angelica’s
mother had given her a beautiful angel bear named Peace that
very afternoon.
Next we set the timing for the response, and in this case it
would be immediate. Lastly, we established that when her soul
was connected and communicating with her, she would know it
because she would feel calm and safe.
When Angelica opened her eyes this time, I immediately knew
she had communicated with her soul and she was awestruck.
Her soul had told her she was, in fact, very ill with a hidden
virus in her lungs. She saw herself in a vision hooked up to all
kinds of machines, her whole family crying around her bed. But
as she experienced all of this, she said, she was calm and at
29. 6 M e e t Yo u r S o u l
peace. She knew she would be all right once the virus passed
through her.
I wheeled her to her next set of tests. She felt that finally she
knew what was going on and would be fine. She knew there
would be a rough spot but she would make it through.
I went back to see Angelica two days later. She was in a
coma and her condition looked very serious. She was moved
that afternoon to the intensive care unit. One week later, she
was still in a coma and the doctors were consulting her family
on the next step. The doctors recommended the family suspend
the life support that afternoon. Her kidney and brain functions
were so low they were afraid she would not be able to regain a
good quality of life. She would have permanent brain damage.
One family member was not yet present, and the family
asked to wait two more days for that person to arrive. The doctors
agreed to keep her on life support until Monday morning.
I went to visit her Sunday evening, and when I walked into
her hospital room the scene was exactly as Angelica had
described it from her vision. I knew even though everyone was
in anguish, she was at peace and her soul was with her. I closed
my eyes, took in several clear breaths, visualized her soul as an
angel and let her know everything was exactly as her soul had
said and to keep trusting that everything would be just fine.
Her condition improved overnight and steadily for the next
three days. I visited Angelica one last time a week later and she
was totally functioning. The doctors called her recovery a miracle.
I contacted her 10 years later. I had no idea whether she
would remember me or her experience that day with her soul. I
was pleasantly surprised to find out the incident had changed
her life. This is what she told me:
• Her soul is a constant companion she calls her Angel of Peace.
• She communicates with her soul in the early morning by
30. M e e t Yo u r S o u l 7
writing. That helps her start her busy day and keep
her life calm.
• She and her soul discuss everything that happens to
her and her family.
• She is known in her community as “The Peacemaker.”
People come to her with their worries, fears and pain,
and she helps them know the calm and strength her soul
has shown her.
• Angelica’s soul does not have a form. For her, it is a feeling
that penetrates her every cell and helps her trust that
everything will be just fine.
• Life still has its surprises. Angelica says she has three boys,
but with her soul as her daily counsel and friend, she
doesn’t worry. She knows that together, she and her soul
can figure out what to do about any issue or situation that
comes her way.

3 Sandy and the
Botanical Gardens
A Case Study on Career Decision
When Sandy came to see me, she was 47 years old. Her
last child was in college, her husband was engrossed
in his business, and she was feeling lost with no
direction or purpose. She seemed to be almost depressed. She
said she just couldn’t find any meaning in her life and that she
could use a good friend to lift her spirits.
The only thing that seemed to move her at all was a
recurring dream she had been having for about six months. She
said the feeling of the dream was starting to linger during the
day. She especially noticed that her mind drifted back to the
feeling of the dream while she was at work in her job as an
assistant exhibit designer at the local botanical gardens.
Sandy described it as one of those “feel-good dreams.” She
would wake up feeling safe, happy, free and ready for a big
adventure with a best friend. But by mid-morning, she was stuck
back in the humdrum gray mist of the day – except on the days
at work when she walked in the flower gardens. I asked Sandy
what her favorite flowers and plants were, and she hesitated,
giving me a lost look. “I don’t know,” she said. “I love all flowers,
but I have never really been able to relate to plants. Flowers are
my best friends. They talk to me. My favorites have changed
through the years.”
I asked her to tell me about the work she was doing at the
34. M e e t Yo u r S o u l 11
botanical gardens. She said she had been offered an enormous
opportunity and great honor by being named design coordinator
for a new Japanese garden exhibit that was to be built in the
future. Sandy was a bit perplexed. She said she was not excited
about the project at all – in fact, just thinking about it made her
feel depressed. But she knew she should be thrilled with the
opportunity to direct the project and be the primary designer.
I was anxious by this time to find out what was at the root of
Sandy’s troubles, so I suggested we take a journey and consult her
soul. Sandy hesitated, saying she just was not sure what her soul
was or how it could help. I knew I was looking at a classic
example of a soul reaching out to create a special partnership,
and we needed to open space for this to happen. Here was
someone who’d had a close connection with her soul all of her
life and didn’t realize it. Sandy’s soul was trying to make contact
in her recurring dream, and I felt it must have something to do
with her new assignment at the botanical gardens.
I suggested the following plan for her soul journey:
1) Create a personal definition of what “soul” could be for
her.We would find the words that would take the concept of
soul out of the realmof mystery and bring it to life.
2) Have Sandy remember how and when she had connected
with her soul during her life. Her first clues would be in
the things she loved and what she loved to do at critical
times in her life.
3) Develop an image or personification of her soul that she
could relate to on a daily basis. This would give her soul
form and meaning, as well as a way for her to know when
and how her soul was connecting with her so she could
receive and apply her soul’s wisdom.
4) Have Sandy merge with her soul, which she would
discover she was already doing quite frequently.
35. 12 M e e t Yo u r S o u l
5) Open the space for her soul to interact with her and
guide her in a more practical way. We would do this by
removing and releasing unresolved issues from her past.
Sandy and I worked together several times. Her journey
consisted primarily of exercises, techniques and tools I have
included in the chapters that follow. These tools are designed to
help people form a connection on their own.
Sandy defined her soul as her primary creative partner. In
her exploration, she remembered being in connection with her
soul through her love for and communication with flowers,
which started for her at age 2 when the daisies in her mother’s
garden told her how pretty she was. She personified her soul as
a flower that would stand out from all others when she or her
soul needed to connect.
Through a series of what I call “merging,” she discovered
that the feelings of freedom and safety and the desire for a big
adventure with a good friend would come to her from now on
when she and her soul were working together. Finally, we used
the technique of “heart opening” to explore her negative
response to creating the new Japanese garden exhibit at the
botanical gardens.
For Sandy, defining, remembering and personifying her soul
came easily. However, she had a more difficult time finding value
in linking her soul connection with her job. Simply opening her
heart was not enough for her to move her through what seemed
to be a more complex inner conflict. Her recurring dream
continued to disturb her.
She actually felt so strongly about this discomfort that she
was considering turning down the job opportunity. I suggested
that we explore with her soul some old patterning and fears
that might need to be released to make room for her new
creative expression before she walked away from the Japanese
36. M e e t Yo u r S o u l 13
garden project. We used many of the tools you will find in this
book to facilitate Sandy’s opening into her power and sense of
true creative expression in partnership with her soul.
Sandy came to the understanding that designing gardens
and creating landscapes of flowers is who she is. The gardens
feed her heart and soul. She was considering turning down the
job opportunity simply out of fear. She was afraid she couldn’t
do the job. So with the help of her soul, she created a technique
for developing her landscape design plans – a technique that
gives her confidence in her ability.
She tapes the project plans and ideas on the wall on big
sheets of paper so she can really get a big picture of the project as
it unfolds. Sandy sees her soul as the sun that shines on her
gardens and brings them to life, so she projects a large spotlight
representing her soul onto the plans on the wall. As she reviews
the project’s development, she consults with her soul, and
together they bring her gardens to life.
The Japanese garden project took six years to complete, and
Sandy did indeed work as director of its design and
development. She created an award-winning exhibit, which
today is still revered as one of the most magnificent examples of
a Japanese garden in the United States. Her recurring dream is
now gone, and she knows her greatest partner in her expression
through the world of gardens is her soul.

Epilogue
Your connection and interaction with your soul will be
unique for you. Each person’s experience is different, and each
equally profound. With your soul as your partner, you have
insight into your conscious world. Your soul will know and
respond to what you need and want before you are even aware.
Now that you’ve learned how to connect with your soul, the
next step is to engage the power of this partner as your inner
radar. This will lead you into extraordinary and meaningful
occurrences. You know your soul is engaged when you’re doing
something that feels so right and so meaningful that you slip
into “the zone.” You could be playing a sport, making music,
writing a poem, taking a walk, rocking your baby, praying,
negotiating a business deal, performing volunteer work, or
spending time on a hobby like woodworking or scrapbooking.
Time seems to stand still, and you feel a pure bliss that words
can’t describe. You know at that moment you’re exactly where
you’re supposed to be.
You can learn about this power in my book Launch Your
Inner Radar: Empowering Your Soul, A Guide to Activating Your Life
Purpose, which is another volume in the Stretch Your Wings and
Fly Collection. You’ll learn how to recognize your true self-identity
and life’s calling; uncover your natural talents and
abilities; use the power of your soul to improve your health and
well-being; and work in partnership with your soul to create
your future.
Your soul is the director of your life purpose, so this is an
exciting journey. Have fun with it!
