Hip hop originated in the 1970s in the Bronx, New York and has four main elements: MC-ing/rapping, DJ-ing, breakdancing, and graffiti. It finds its roots in African culture and its golden age was from 1980-early 1990s. Some pioneers of hip hop include DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash. Hip hop imagery typically features black male artists and rebellion, and portrays women in a sexualized manner dancing with male singers.
