Clarke as SamClarke as Sam
3. Stereotypical view of both ofStereotypical view of both of
these charactersthese characters
Both characters play the leading role in the film. Sam follows the
more stereotypical view of a black male in a society due to him
representing the majority of young males that come from
council estates and suburban areas. Throughout his role he
eventually breaks from this stereotype and wants to form a new
identity and try and leave the past behind him.
Kyron in a way flips the views of the black stereotype due to
him being the protagonist or so called hero in the film. Rather
than him being in full control of the situation, he is more
unaware /confused compared to anyone else in the film. He is
only doing what he is told to do due to him lacking choice. This
breaks typical conventions rather than him trying to fit into a
gang orientated social group.
4. ArchetypeArchetype
Sam is a character that some audiences are meat to connect
with. Although he tries to do what’s right he doesn’t always do
the right things morally. This therefore at times can lead the
audience to questioning his actions and make a final
judgement on him as a character when they get to know him
more. Also due to his actions that he has committed in the past,
this can also somewhat change some peoples judgement on
his character.
Kyron on the other hand is a hero who fights for what he
believes is right for both himself and society. The only difference
is that Kyron suffers from being misunderstood by the
community around him with many feeling as if his actions aren’t
bringing benefits but problems. This is not the case however. He
is only misunderstood due to the colour of his skin and the way
in which he dresses. He also comes across extremely
intimidating due to his size but behind all the anger his face
conveys he is a kind hearted character.
5. Values and BeliefsValues and Beliefs
Sam is a character that on the outside seems like he is a person
that only cares about himself and know one else. This is due to
his gritty appearance and anger in his face. Its also a view that
has been set on him due to the actions he has committed in
the past. Deep down though although he cares a lot about
himself and his own safety. He tries his best not to involve those
who he cares about in his affairs.
Kyron is a character that always puts himself before others. He is
an extremely religious character but at times questions the
presence of God when he is in a cry for help. The only reason
he is in the situation he is in throughout the film is due to the
struggle of his family and him wanting to help them. All he
hopes for is for a better life for him and his family.
6. Appearance and CostumeAppearance and Costume
Sam throughout the film is shown wearing things like baggy
jeans, tracksuit bottoms and hoodies which is an extremely
stereotypical view of the suburban dress code within London. It
also gives a representation of his class in society just looking at
the things in which he wears. He never usually smiles and, similar
to Kyron, has a constant angry looking face which creates the
extremely stereotypical view of a black young male from a
suburban area/council estate.
Kyron dresses extremely similar to Sam also wearing baggy
looking hoodies and tracksuit bottoms. This again follows the
extremely stereotypical views of how young black males are
represented in sociaty. This in turn can lead to many people
having a false misconception of a character on first glance.
7. Relationships with othersRelationships with others
At first glace Sam seems like an extremely reserved and
antisocial character keeping himself to himself and not
interfering in anybody else's business unless in effects him. This is
due to him only being released from prison and due to many
rival gangs wanting to kill him. As we get deeper into the film
however, we see Sam caring for others more but most of the
time keeps his head up and tries to keep himself away from
trouble. He’s a character that regrets his actions in his past and
wants to move on with his life for the better.
Kyron on the other hand makes it evident that he cares for his
family and friends around him and would go to extreme lengths
just to keep them safe, even if he’s putting himself in danger.
8. SimilaritiesSimilarities
- They both at times follow the black stereotype in terms
of their appearance but also both break it in terms
of their actions, more so Kyron compared to Sam
- They’re both similar age
- They have the same/ similar dress codes
- Both characters look out for themselves and at times
their friends and family. More so Kyron the Sam
- They are both from London
- Both of them have character development
- They both break away from a misunderstood cliché
stereotype, seeking out a different lifestyle and
wanting to leave the past behind them.
9. DifferencesDifferences
Sam in his early years enjoyed causing trouble and at times
being violent. This was his representation in the film kidulthood.
He comes across and an antisocial character that doesn’t
share his feelings and keeps himself to himself. Sam isn’t happy
with his position in life. He regrets what he did in the past and
wants to try to move on and feel accepted again.
Kyron as a character is open to how close he is with his family
and friends. Although he dresses the way he does, he is a kind
hearted religious young man. He takes things extremely seriously
if him or his family are in danger. He does not enjoy violence or
hurting people for that matter and he is happy with his position
in life.
