2. Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear,digust and horror from viewers. They usually feature frequent jump scenes that make the viewers jump and startled through the means of macabre and the supernatural , thus frequently overlapping with the thriller [such as the film psycho] and science fiction [such as the alien series] genres. Horrors also frequently overlap with the thrller genre. Horror films deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidde worst fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, if some films contain a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus oubtreak and surrealism, they may be termed "horror".
3. The first horror films were a series of short films about the supernatural by directors such as, georges meliers. Films such as Frankenstein and Dracula popularized the film genre in the 1930’s. In the 50’s and 60’s the focus of horror films drifted towards either apocalyptic or demonic types of film being allowed for by the greater advances in technology. In the 70’s and 80’s more and more slasher films were made again due to the greater levels of technology
4. 2000-present Since the year 2000 slasher films have still continued to be made however the films that have been grossing highest in the genre but are not part of a major series are psychological horrors such as the others. It has also seen a return in zombie horror films being created and being popular
5. The shining The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film directed b Stanley Kubrick, co-written with novelist Diane Johnson, and starring Jack Niccolson.. The film is based on the novel by the same name, by Stephen king, about a writer with a wife and young son who accepts the job of off-season caretaker at an isolated hotel. The son, who possesses psychic abilities, is able to see things in the future or past, such as the ghosts in the hotel. Soon after moving in, and after a paralyzing winter storm that leaves the family snowbound, the father becomes influenced by the supernatural presence in the haunted hotel; he descends into madness and attempts to kill his wife and son. Lenny Henry now acts as the antagonist in an advert for premier inn
