PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am recent Biology graduate with a passion for Ecology. In my three years as an undergraduate I
tailored my course modules and work experience towards gaining knowledge and experience in
this field. The rewarding nature of these experiences has confirmed my desire to pursue a career
in Ecology.
I believe my passion is complemented by an aptitude for ecological work where my core skills of
organisation, communication and analysis would be a valuable asset. I have not only
demonstrated these skills in previous lab and field work, but built on them with essential practical
knowledge. I am highly motivated individual with a deep passion and knowledge for my chosen
field.
My ultimate ambition is to lead important ecological projects that deliver new scientific
understanding about the way living organisms interact with their environment.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
April 2011 to Present | Demonstrator | Warehouse Demonstration Services, Costco
My key responsibility was to generate consumer interest in new product lines by demonstrating
product benefits, encouraging product trial and using promotions to generate interest. The role is
critical in determining whether new products should become core lines.
Key achievements:
• Emphasis on customer service has led to frequently achieving over 90% in
mystery shopping scores in a store which averages 75% (highest scoring store in
the UK)
2. • Handpicked from colleagues across the country to support new store openings in
Farnborough, Southampton and Hayes.
• Management of new product promotions including setting up the stands,
merchandising the products and implementing the point of sale strategy.
• Recognised as a training specialist for new starters & store openings. Trained
colleagues in a range of disciplines from admin and processes to sales
techniques.
April 2013 to September 2014 | Research Assistant | Edge Hill University
Volunteer supporting various lead researchers in important ecological projects that incorporated
a range of both lab and field work. My key responsibilities included preparing field work areas
(e.g. laying pitfall traps), carefully collecting field samples, note taking and data collection, sorting
invertebrate species samples, pinning and analysing trends.
Key achievements:
• Critical role in supporting an important ecological study: ‘The Effects of Grazing
Treatments on the Invertebrate populations and the Vegetation structure of
Upland Limestone Grasslands'. Helped prove that sheep grazing can actually
have a positive influence on diversity of plant and invertebrate species, which
was not previously recognised.
• Entrusted with leading a team of assistants for the final round of fieldwork on a
project. This included overseeing the collection of samples and the removal of
traps and cages.
• Elevated from a volunteer to a fully paid member of staff due the high standard of
work on a range of projects. As a direct result of this recognition another lecturer
also offered me a paid role on their project.
• Trained and educated other volunteers and students in both lab and field work.
Recognised as an expert in the field of Carabid beetles and as a result was
asked to support student learning on a specific module.
• Assisted colleague researchers in the taking of vegetation surveys including the
making of a species list and sward architecture.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS & ACHIEVEMENTS
• Experience using ‘R’ statistical modelling program for computing to prove
significant results as part of dissertation ('The Effect of Elevation on the
Abundance and Diversity of Ground-Dwelling Beetles')
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Access & Powerpoint
• Full UK driving license
• As a keen sportsman I have been recognised on numerous occasions, including:
• Club Captain of Edge Hill University for 2 years. Led the team to the ‘Most
Improved Club’ award and won a Local Lancashire Indoor league. In addition, I
was awarded ‘Unsung hero of the team’ for my level of dedication and
commitment throughout my 2 years as Club Captain. Was also honoured with a
volunteer award for my services to the university as Club Captain.
• Won Team Player of the Year for the Edge Hill Badminton 3rd team.
• Appointed as a Member of the North Crawley Cricket Club Committee.
