If you are a parent, then
you know the fear that
kicks in right away when
your little one starts
walking near the edge of
a pool – it might feel
similar to what one would
think is a heart attack.
Well, here in Palm Beach County, everyone has a pool – why wouldn’t they? It’s
South Florida, but not all pools are created equal. Some are deep, some are
shallow, and some have safety features built in, while others don’t – causing
sheer panic when children are around.
There are very unfortunate statistics that I don’t even need to post here that show
how many deaths and near deaths that occur each year from negligence.
Here are our top pool safety tips for parents:









Always supervise your child! Even if they have a floatation device that keeps
them above water, you can never be too sure.
Never leave your children unattended…not even for a second.
Make sure your kid learns to swim! This might seem obvious, but just because
you take your child to the pool does not mean they will automatically learn to
swim.
If you go boating or to the ocean, always have your child wear a life jacket
Avoid alcohol use and obviously drugs. On that note, if you are taking
medication that may cause drowsiness be sure you have someone else to assist
you in your supervision.
Pool safety features such as walls and nets are there to help, not as a substitute
for you watching your children.
Even if lifeguards are present, always supervise your child
If you can’t find your child or just can’t spot him or her – check the water first!
