WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK
CONCERNING MENS WEDDING RINGS
• What style appeals the most to you?
• Will you be wearing your
wedding ring while working?
• Will you wear your wedding ring everyday?
• Do you want matching wedding rings?
• Do you want gemstones in your ring?
8. Jewelry
STYLES
• DOMED - The traditional style of ring that is
simplistic and not flashy. This style suits men
who are not used to wearing jewelry.
• FLAT - One of the more popular styles is the
contemporary flat style. They have squared
off sides that make it look sleek and modern.
• PATTERNED - Patterned rings come in a
wide variety including two-toned (use of
two different metals), woven, wave and
milgrain (tiny beaded pattern around edge
ring).
• GEMSTONES - Diamonds are the most
popular gemstones to use, but there are also
sapphires, rubies, emeralds and more that
can be used for a ring. Rings with gemstones
require more care than the plain bands.
6 rockfordbride.com
9. METALS
• STERLING SILVER - The least expensive
metal and it is more prone to dents and nicks.
Since silver is a soft metal it is mixed with
another metal to make it more durable.
In addition, it requires more polishing so
it does not tarnish.
• GOLD - The traditional choice for men is gold
and polished to a shiny finish. It is a popular
choice for engraving and easily maintained. It
is also an affordable option for choosing
rings.
• PLATINUM - It is a silver colored metal
described as white. It is considered the most
valuable among all the metals and the most
durable. Platinum is prone to scratches which
can be buffed out.
• PALLADIUM - This metal is considered
platinum's cousin. Palladium is not as
expensive as platinum. It became popular in
the 1930’s when platinum was required for
military purposes and hard to come by.
• TITANIUM - This metal is lightweight and
unbreakable. It has an industrial finish with
less shine.
• TUNGSTEN - This metal is highly durable
and scratch resistant. It is a dark gray
color that is different from the traditional
silver, white and gold rings. Tungsten is an
inexpensive alternative to the traditional
rings.

WHAT IS THE BEST DRESS
STYLE FOR MY BODY TYPE?
There are so many guides out there to help you. These
are never exactly accurate. Every woman has qualities
of certain body types but the truth is most women
are a mix of a couple body types. The best way to
figure out what works for your body type is to go to
the bridal shop and work with a consultant. Tell your
consultant the areas of your body you would like to
accent or how you would like to look on your wedding
day. Do you want to accentuate a skinny waist? Well
then, the corset bodice is for you. Do you have broad
shoulders? Well then, try a sweetheart neckline. Your
consultant is the one who is the expert so use their
knowledge to help pick out the perfect dress for you.
GUIDELINES TO GIVE BRIDESMAIDS
• Give them a deadline
• Specific details (color, material, length,
accessories)
• The style, number name, color name and
where they can purchase a specific dress
• Be honest about expenses
• Include your bridesmaids in the process and
make a fun girls day trip to try on dresses

• What is the lead time on dresses?
• Will the store send the dress

• How long will the store hold the dress?

ORDERING ONLINE
• Is the website current?
• Do they have a unique sizing system?
• What is the average price for alterations?
• What is the return/refund policy?

TWO TICKETS TO PARADISE
by Gail Hummel - Camelot World Travel
Jenn had spent days online looking at destination
wedding and honeymoon options. By the time her
fiancé Tim returned from his business trip, she was
tense, confused and ready to give up. “Jenn, you’ve
collaborated with a professional for everything else for
our wedding. Why are you agonizing over this? Travel
agents do this every day!” said Tim. The light bulb
went on and her shoulders relaxed. She checked out
agency websites for her area and found an agent at
Camelot World Travel that specialized in exactly what
they wanted. She called for an appointment.
When Jenn and Tim arrived at the agency, they were
greeted by a professional. The agent asked many
questions: Do you like to scuba? How important is an
ocean view balcony to you? Do you want an intimate
boutique resort or a large and lively spot? Are you
beach or pool people? When everything was answered,
the agent showed them websites and videos of resorts
she felt were the best fit. They then turned toward
pricing. The budget narrowed their field but the agent
assured them they could place a deposit and then
make payments. The agency even had a wedding/
honeymoon registry so people could 'gift' money
toward their trip!
With everything sorted out, Jenn and Tim headed
home relieved and full of excitement. They had
brochures to look over, referrals for websites to check
and a lot to discuss. Later that evening, they sipped
wine and chatted over brochures while Tim searched
the web for reviews. Blasts on social media had friends

34. DEAREST PRINCESS BRIDE...
by Kelly Delamater - Backyard Soiree Weddings and Events
Dearest Princess Bride…‘You don’t know, what you
don’t know’ – let’s fix that!
I have been planning, designing, coordinating and
executing events for 25 years. I have worked with
every kind of Princess Bride, Queen Mother and budget
in the Midwest and beyond so, I am more confident
than ever when I say – whether your wedding will be a
$10,000 or $100,000 affair, you shouldn’t do it without
me and the sooner that you contact me the better. I
will save you time, money and a mountain of stress.
I promise a JOYful Journey to I Do and I guarantee
Your BEST DAY EVER.
With that in mind, Dear Princess Bride, I hope you will
take to heart what I am sharing, because it is coming
from mine and it is key for your best day ever.
This day has the same amount of hours as every other
day and it is going to fly by. You need a detailed,
realistic and well-constructed timeline. It is the first
order of business when I meet with a Bride. As soon
as we have a strong draft, I send it to her vendors.
Then, I send it again the week of the wedding after
all of the planning, details and vendors are confirmed.
In addition, I like to be sure that at least one of her
Maids and Groomsmen have a copy to help keep the
Wedding Party on track, along with both of the Queen
Mothers so that they can relax knowing that all has
been thought through.

35. The reveal is ‘The REAL DEAL!’ Do It!
You have purchased the most expensive and beautiful
dress of your lifetime. You have Hair & Make-Up
Stylists and a professional Photographer. You will look
your loveliest. Why not spend as much of the day in
this ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Dress, with your ‘Once in a
Lifetime’ Groom?
The reveal can be as private or ‘shared’ as you like.
It allows the Photographer, the day to capture you,
instead of a limited amount of time between the
Ceremony and the Cocktail Hour. And, then, because
of the reveal, when it is time to ‘Smile and Walk Down
the Aisle’ you aren’t so nervous, therefore, able to be
‘in’ the moment and remember it. And then; You, Your
Groom and Wedding Party are able to attend YOUR
Cocktail Hour and celebrate with your Guests.
The reveal allows you to have a Wedding day –

and make the most of the investment of your
Photographer. And – the reveal photos are the best.
Hair and make-up are where the day goes wrong.
A common mistake made by Brides is assuming that
there is plenty of time for Hair & Make-Up if they
have blocked the morning. The number of Maids
that you have must be considered and then the
number of Stylists and the time that they would like
for each Maid. It depends if your Maids are timely
or tend to run late. It depends if your Maids have
thick hair or thin. And then, I like to allow for ‘Just
in Case’ time. Just in case, your hair or a Maids hair
isn’t cooperating. There is a method to the order and
scheduling that I help my Brides think through, so that
we ensure the morning is fun and the day is off to a
good start.
The Bottom Line...
Neither Queen Mother nor Princess Bride should
have to be answering texts and calls from Vendors,
watching the time and directing everyone. Princess
Brides should awake on their wedding day filled
with joy, excitement that grows, and able to be fully
present in every moment with their Maids and Queen
Mother.
Queen Mothers should be able to enjoy the morning
with their Princess Bride and be calm while hosting her
guests.
Of course, there is more, but, I have given you my
BIGGEST and BEST Tips, Dear Princess Bride, to help
ensure that Your Wedding Day is your best day ever.

When choosing a wedding date you need to keep
a few things in mind. The first thing would be to
have a few different possibilities for a date. This
will allow for flexibility in venues and will help
you find the perfect location and day for the right
price. Many times Saturday weddings are most
desirable. This is a convenient day because it
is in the middle of the weekend and the easiest
for those who live out of town to travel. The
downside to a Saturday wedding is that it is the
most desirable wedding day for a lot of people,
which can add to the cost and availability of
venues. When booking a venue, you may face
the problem that Saturdays are booked solid.

WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK
• Does the officiant require you to go through

ceremony?
• Does he or she have references? How many
weddings has he or she officiated?
• Are you allowed to customize
your wedding ceremony?
• Is the officiant willing to work with a different
denomination for a bicultural wedding?
• What states is the officiant licensed?
• Does the couple have to be a member of
their faith in order to be married by the
officiant?
37 rockfordbride.com
40. MARRIAGE LICENSE
Marriage licenses are subjective to counties. Check
with your local government and follow what they
require to get a marriage license. Our website,
www.rockfordbride.com, has a list of websites for
the different counties within our area to guide you
in obtaining a marriage license. Just look for our
page underneath Marriage Licenses and Changing
Names.
TYPES OF CEREMONIES
• Religious is usually a traditional ceremony that
already has a program and less opportunity to
be creative. It is usually performed within a
church, cathedral, synagogue, mosque, etc.
• Civil is a more casual ceremony performed by
judges, justice of the peace and state governors.
Each county has different regulations about
who can officiate a marriage ceremony and how
to obtain a marriage license.
• Commitment is a ceremony between two
individuals who want to commit their lives to one
another. This ceremony usually follows traditional
wedding customs but allows for the couple to
be very creative in how they would like the
ceremony performed. Not all states will allow
marriage licenses for commitment ceremonies.

44. Save the Dates & Invitations
For a non-destination wedding, six to eight months is
the appropriate amount of time to send save the date
cards. For a destination wedding or a wedding that
may be near a busy holiday weekend, six to twelve
months is the appropriate amount of time to send save
the date cards. Wedding invitations should be sent out
three or five months prior to the ceremony. On a save
the date card you typically would include your names,
the date of the wedding, and a link directing people
to your wedding website. On your invitations you will
want to add more specific information.
The wedding invitations should include the bride and
groom's names, the date, time and location of the
ceremony and the time and location of the reception.
This would also be a good time to include an inserted
card with local hotel information for out of town
guests. Lastly, you should include the reply card with
the invitation. It is polite to add a self-addressed,
pre-stamped envelope. Don’t forget the RSVP date
on the reply cards! It can be perceived as rude to
include your registry information with your invitations
or save the date cards. Make sure that those close
to you, such as parents and the bridal party know
where you are registered but do not include it in any
printed material. It is okay to add this information
on your wedding website because that is a less
formal informational means of delivering updates and
information.

Photography Styles
Natural Light - This can be a challenging shot
because it is taken using the sun’s natural light. This
style gives a soft feel and is going to probably be a
daylight only kind of shot.
Candid - These shots are the “in the moment” kinds
of shots. They are also known as "photojournalism.”
These shots are very nice and original because they
show the real moments in the wedding and the real
joy associated with the day.
45 • rockfordbride.com
48. Photography
Make sure that you are meeting with the actual
photographer who will be taking pictures for
your wedding. Some companies hire out, or send
representatives to do all of the contract work with you
prior to the actual event. Knowing your photographer
will help considerably.
Make sure you are working with someone that you
like and get along with. You want a photographer that
understands your wants and needs and can make that
happen for you. If you like them, you are going to be
comfortable with them and work better together to get
the best pictures.
Digital files may be an easy and convenient way for
you to look at and access your pictures. If you are
technology savvy, this will be a convenient way to
show off your wedding photos without carrying an

62. A ROCKFORD WEDDING WITH
A TOUCH OF SCOTLAND
by John & Nikki LiCausi
It is 100% true that planning a wedding can take over
a year to plan and coordinate. Even with that much
time to make arrangements, it still seemed like we
were finishing the loose ends of the planning in the
final hour. It was a wonderful day, but we are now glad
that it is a successful moment in our past.
About the Bride & Groom
This particular wedding was a little more unique
than a traditional wedding, as the bride to be was
Scottish. Nikki Aitchison, now Nikki LiCausi, was born
and raised in Eyemouth, Scotland until she moved
to the United States with her mother and youngest
brother when she was 15 years old. As a Guilford
High School graduate with a Criminal Justice Degree
from Rasmussen College, Nikki can be considered a
Rockford area native. The groom, John LiCausi, was
born in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Belvidere
High School in 2000. He was a member of the first

2000 as a college freshman, and graduated with a
degree in business administration in 2004.
It is hard to believe that two people that have spent
so much time in the Rockford area never crossed
paths until 2011 when they met on the 4th of July at
Tad’s while boating on the Rock River. A mutual friend
introduced them, and the rest is history.
Planning the Wedding
In our opinion, the most important parts of the
wedding planning were securing a church for the
ceremony and then a venue for the reception. It
seems that Rockford area churches and wedding
venues are being booked over a year in advance,
which is when we did finalize our choices. It would be
nearly impossible to plan a last minute wedding at a
popular church or one of the elite venues in Rockford.
We were lucky enough to have secured Court Street
United Methodist Church for the ceremony and the
Hilton Garden Inn for the reception. Both of those
choices were excellent in our opinion! Our Pastor
who is a long time personal friend, Eric Blachford,
was welcomed back to Court Street United Methodist
Church in order to officiate the ceremony. Choosing
a friend who was a pastor to do the ceremony was
key, as he was able to add additional depth and
insight about us during the ceremony. Kelly Plath, the
reception coordinator for the Hilton, was first class!
She made sure that all of our needs were satisfied,
and we had extra confidence that our wedding
reception would be impressive as a result of her
diligence.
65. DJ Magic Entertainment from Marengo, IL and
Madison, WI was our entertainment that evening. Matt
& Tyler, was another excellent choice that we made
for our wedding reception. We could rest assured that
the reception was well structured with their guidance.
We were confident in our entertainment based on a
personal relationship with the owner and a 24 year
history of the company. This company provided us
access to it’s client base over that 24 year period.
Their clients all opted in to be references so we knew
we were in good hands. Additionally, Tyler’s music
playlist was perfect, with a healthy mix of traditional
and brand new music. Most couples that work with
Tyler’s company pick out their songs ahead of time
using their exclusive online planning web site through
Gig Centric. They had many tools to make our
planning fairly easy. However, with our busy lives we
decided to put our trust in our entertainer and trusted
their abilities to not only emcee but also make sure
our guests had fun.
63 rockfordbride.com
66. He also referred us to our wedding photographers, The
Wedding Flashers that are also from Madison, WI. We
cannot wait to see our finalized wedding day photos,
as the portfolio from this husband/wife photography
duo speaks for itself!
We chose Ella Bella Productions for our wedding video.
They provided us 2 professional videographers and
multiple cameras with various special lenses. One of
the things we are excited about is our participation
in their Director’s Cut option. Once a rough edit
is created, they allow us to watch it and provide
live-feedback so that the final product exceeds our
expectations.. The future is unknown and capturing
our emotions and the people we care about with us
was important on this special day to us.
We debated about whether or not to have a photo
booth, and we are very glad that we choose to have
64 • rockfordbride.com
67. one. We opted to have our entertainment company
provide the photo booth services so that we could
make coordination easier along with having one
single point of contact for multiple services. Timeless
Memories Photobooths put our custom wedding logo
onto each photostrip, which was definitely a nice
touch. Being able to review the photo booth album
collection was one of the most enjoyable things to
do after the wedding. We also liked the fact that the
photo booth company provided us and our guests
access to a private online gallery which housed not
only our photostrips but also the individual shots.
Overall, having a photo booth allowed our guests to
have a fun way of documenting their presence, and
we would recommend it to any couple that is currently
planning their wedding. There was hardly any planning
or additional work to have the photobooth services
at the wedding. Having a unique wedding reception
entrance is also important in our opinion! Therefore,
we had the City of Rockford Pipe Band perform behind
us as we entered our wedding reception. They did an
excellent job!
One of the only mistakes that we made was with our
wedding cake. We chose a popular bakery located
off of North 2nd in Machesney Park. We thought the
cake tasted fine, but the aesthetics of the cake were
way below expectations for a $700 price tag. When
we attempted to contact the bakery after the wedding
to discuss the issues, we were further disappointed.
It is hard to believe how a bakery with such a great
tasting cake during the sales process can leave such a
poor aftertaste due to the sub-par visual quality and
impolite service.

68. Final Wedding Advice from John and Nikki
If you love Italian food, then Cia Bella makes a great
choice for a rehearsal dinner! Be sure to finalize your
church and wedding venue at least a year in advance!
Do not be “hands off” with your wedding planning. If
you want something to be done a certain way, then be
explicit with your instructions. Those limo party buses
may seem like a good option, but they are definitely
expensive for the short amount of time that you are
given. Regarding your groomsmen, make sure that
they wear all parts of the tuxedo, including the
shirt studs. If you are planning to take pictures in a
public park, you may want to reconsider since you
will be forced to wait for bystanders walking in the
background of your pictures. At the wedding reception,
be sure to formally announce your bar hours so that
people know when they can/cannot get a drink. At
your reception, be sure to make your rounds to say
hello to guests as early as possible because some
guests are probably planning to leave immediately
after dinner. If you have many guests traveling from
out of town, then having your wedding reception at
a hotel is definitely an added convenience. Lastly, we
had an adult-only wedding, and we believe that was
an excellent choice so that parents can have a night
off and enjoy themselves. We are excited for our
futures together.

78. SETTING THE SCENE
by Erin Stoffregen - Event Floral
When envisioning your dream wedding, you start to
picture a specific setting, color and mood. As such a
visual element, flowers and décor truly help establish
this tone of your wedding. They are present in the
majority of your photographs memorializing your
special day. As this day celebrates you, here are some
examples of how to customize your decorations to
reflect your unique style and personality.
Although trends are enticing, especially with online
exposure, stay true to your personal taste when
selecting colors and themes. You will appreciate a
timeless and classic look that retains its impression
over the years. Consider meaningful details such as
using favorite flowers or symbolic flowers or colors.
Including personalized charms or family heirlooms
in your flowers or as part of your attire keeps loved
one’s memories near and with you throughout the day.
Subtle nods to your unique background and love story
such as places you’ve visited, favorite past times,
or items you’ve collected as a couple are welcome
and interesting features for guests to discover and
experience throughout the occasion.
76 • rockfordbride.com
79. To enhance the impact of your wedding, consider your
chosen venues and how you can complement the
spaces. If in a classic church setting, the scale of your
decorations may be encouraged by the architecture
of the interior. Are there areas to display large altar
or welcoming arrangements at the start of the aisle?
Possibly customized wreaths or staircase décor at
entries? Religious and cultural traditions can also be
infused outside of a standard sanctuary through use of
iconic items such as a cross or chuppah and flowers or
décor to highlight special ceremonial moments.
Outdoor ceremonies or more transitional spaces
provide the perfect canvas for creating a custom
ceremony setting. Framing your ceremony area with
a backdrop or side elements provides intimacy and
adds interest in photographs. Consider hanging items
from surrounding trees or structures such as fabric,
lanterns, wreaths, ribbons, crystals, chandeliers and
more. Arches, trellises, and draped backdrops can also
be transformed for natural and organic looks using
soft flowers or greenery, or styled for more glamorous,
modern affairs with crisp fabric draping, lighting, and
crystal or metallic accents.
Logistically, you will want to consider any restrictions
or requests of your venue, but thinking outside the
box can lead to unexpected décor that leaves a lasting
impression. Nothing is more romantic than a glowing,
77 • rockfordbride.com
80. candlelit aisle for an evening wedding ceremony. Or,
a hanging canopy of flowers and candles guests pass
under to enter a reception space dramatically sets the
mood. If your reception venue boasts features such
as mantles, staircases, and alcoves, these are perfect
spaces to create visual focal areas. A mantle spilling
with draping greenery and candles softens the space
and adds organic romance. A mirrored lobby table
with an overarching arrangement, perhaps with floral
blooms, hanging votives or crystals, adds grandeur
for escort cards, guest book or favors. Entryways,
backdrops, lounge areas, and custom bars lead guests’
eyes to areas of importance and guide movement
throughout the evening. If your venue does not offer
much customization, consider renting furniture to
create sitting areas, creating backdrops for photo
opportunities, or encouraging your caterer or bakery
to artistically display food and dessert tables.
Often overlooked, selecting specialty linens and table
settings adds another layer of interest and carries
your unique style throughout the entire reception.
Undesired chairs might be revamped with covers and
sashes, or for a modern, streamlined twist, fitted
with Spandex covers or chair bands. Even beautiful
chairs can be accentuated with sashes for additional
color or texture. A textured tablecloth, overlay, or
table runner can reinforce a rustic or casual look and
alternately a more reflective, or silky cloth can create
an opulent, dramatic look. For a more formal dinner,
charger plates add elegance and refinement to each
setting. Even requesting a napkin fold other than
what is typically provided can add the finishing touch
to a table.
While planning, don’t be afraid to suggest ideas
that would make your day more meaningful and
memorable to your personal tastes. Talented vendors
can help you formulate the details and thoughts into a
cohesive plan that makes for an unforgettable event.

A rehearsal dinner is an event that occurs the
night prior to the wedding. There will be a wedding
rehearsal prior to the dinner, allowing the parents,
bridal party, and the bride and groom to do a run
through of the ceremony and work out all the details
for the actual ceremony the following day. Afterwards,
the dinner party occurs. This is something that the
groom’s parents traditionally host. Dinner is an
opportunity for everyone to relax and have a nice time
before the busy next day. During or after dinner the
bride and groom have the opportunity to thank those
involved in the wedding along with giving thank you
gifts to those involved in the planning.
