Bauxite mining is not known to most Malaysian except recently due to
environmental pollution issues in Kuantan, Pahang. Potential impacts are
expected to go beyond physical environment and physical illness if the
situation is not controlled.
Bauxite in Southeast Asia
49. In Vietnam, According to the United States Geological Survey, Vietnam is estimated to
hold the world's third-largest bauxite ore reserves, after Guinea and Australia.
The majority of Vietnam's reserves are located in the Central Highlands (Tây Nguyên)
and have only been minimally mined. Bauxite is typically strip mined and is used to
produce aluminum.
According to estimates by Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam's reserves in
the Central Highlands amount to 5.4 billion tons. Despite its large reserves, Vietnam
produces only 30,000 tons of bauxite per year.
In November 2010, Nguyen Tan Dung, the prime minister of Vietnam, announced that
Vietnam's bauxite deposits might total 11,000 Mt; this would be the largest in the world.

Peninsula, northern Burma, north and central Vietnam, Laos, northwest
Cambodia in the Oddar Meanchey province, near Banteay Chhmar, its
north-central area, in the Preah Vihear province in Rovieng district, and in
the northeast in Rattanakiri province have all acquired a reputation as gold
producers at one time or another, and the majority of these still produce
small amounts of placer gold.
Gold in Southeast Asia
56. Indonesia is the largest gold producer county among other Southeast
Asian countries. The gold mines in this country are– Ponkor mine,
Grasberg mine etc.
Most gold production officially reported in government statistics was a
byproduct of Freeport Indonesia's copper mining.
In 1989 total official gold production was about 6,000 kilograms, of which
about 4,000 kilograms was extracted by Freeport Indonesia with a 15,000
kilogram production expected by the end of 1992.
However, a large number of small-scale mining operations in Kalimantan
may have produced as much as 18,000 kilograms of gold in 1989. Many of
these small mines were operated illegally on foreign concessions.
Gold in Southeast Asia
57. Philippines, Mining for gold in the Philippines is not an easy endeavor.
Even so, the country is home to many producers and exploration
companies.
Canatuan mine is a gold mine in Philippines.
Mining gold in Philippines is difficult. As a result, the Philippines is far from
