ON-THE-JOB training building new
homes is putting students on the path
to future careers and national awards.
Barratt Homes has a record of re-
cruiting young people to the business,
and was named as the best employer of
apprentices in the country at last year’s
National Apprenticeship Awards.
This year the company has cemented
its commitment to training young tal-
ent by creating more than 3,000 new
jobs at its sites across the country, and
pledging to take on a further 1,100
apprentices, graduates and trainees
between 2014 and 2016.
Student Shaun Cowell was commen-
ded in the 16 to 24-year-old category at
the 2015 Young Builder of the Year
Awards last week for his work at the
company’s Hollygate Park develop-
ment in Cotgrave, as well as his com-
mitment to his studies. The 24-year-
old, who left school without any formal
qualifications, believes his on-site ex-
perience will lead him to a future ca-
reer.
The Cotgrave resident said: “I really
enjoyed the awards, it was a great day
out and really interesting to see so
many people from different back-
grounds who have been helped by ap-
prenticeships.
“It really showed how good they are at
supporting young people.
“It was nice to have been commen-
ded for my work – I’ve worked hard for
it.
“My main focus now is to continue to
prove myself through my apprentice-
ship. It’s not easy work but I’m really
enjoying it and learning lots too.”
Mr Cowell is studying towards an
NVQ Level 3 qualification in bricklaying
at Central College Nottingham.
Before starting college he had been
struggling for the past five years to find
a job.
He said: “I had applied for lots of jobs
but felt I was mostly turned down
because I am over 20 years old.
“I have a family to support and found
it difficult to make ends meet.
“I saw a local flyer in the community
centre window in Cotgrave, where I live,
asking if people wanted to attend a pre-
apprenticeship course at Central Col-
lege.”
After completing the pre-apprentice-
ship, Shaun undertook a Level 2 brick-
laying course and then secured his
position at Barratt Homes in August.
He said: “I passed everything on the
pre-apprenticeship and it was the first
course I have been on where I knew this
was the job for me. With the help of
Central College I was then selected by
Barratt Homes for an interview and
now I’m working there.”
Shaun was nominated for the award,
organised by YouthBuild UK, whose
aim is to promote engagement with
young people to combat social exclu-
sion, by the college.
Terry Brickles, head of school for
construction at Central College Not-
tingham, said: “We nominated Shaun
because he has been an excellent stu-
dent. He is always asking great ques-
tions, far above the level expected on
the course.
“We are delighted that Shaun’s per-
sistence and hard work have been re-
cognised at a national level.”
Barratt Homes works closely with
colleges and universities to provide on-
the-job training.
Company managing director John
Dillon said: “We’re all very proud of
Shaun’s achievement and pleased that
he has received the recognition he de-
serves for his continued hard work.
“Shaun is an excellent example of
what can be achieved through an ap-
prenticeship with Barratt Homes.
“Apprenticeships combine on-the-
job experience with classroom-based
learning and we have found them to be
one of the most effective ways of build-
ing construction skills.
“We pride ourselves on the level of
investment we make to ensure that
talent is developed and valued.”

INTERNS GAIN EXPERIENCE
AN international student from
Zimbabwe has spent the last year
gaining experience with a local
home builder.
Muneni Chirinda has been working
with the Nottingham-based North
Midlands division of
Barratt Homes.
The 21-year-old is
studying structural
engineering with
architecture at
Coventry University
and has spent his
placement year as an
intern with the
company’s technical
department.
He said: “This year
has proven an excellent
opportunity to put my
existing knowledge base
into practice, as well as being a
learning curve too.
“Having been involved in projects
that researched business processes
and sustainability
factors, I have
developed as a
professional, gained
commercial awareness
and great insight going
into my final year at
university.
“I’m pleased to say
I’ll be staying with
Barratt Homes for the
foreseeable future,
working on a part-time
basis during my final
year to see projects
through and I’ve been
accepted onto the two-year
graduate scheme, following my
studies.”
Marzia Mucchala has also spent
the last year at the Nottingham
branch as a marketing intern as
part of her studies in business and
marketing at De Montfort
University.
The 21-year-old said: “I applied
for the internship with Barratt
Homes because I wanted to
experience a new challenge.
“It has been
absolutely fantastic; I’ve
been given a lot of
responsibility and
consequently learnt so
much more than I
thought I would.
“The Future Talent
team give interns a lot
of help to continue their
progression and
everyone at the
company has been
amazing.
“I’ve been able to put
what I’ve learnt at
university into practice and this
real life experience will help me to
go forward into my final year and
benefit me when looking to start my
career in the future.”
As this year’s interns
return to university to
complete their final year
of study, a new intake is
stepping up to gain first-
hand experience for
themselves.
John Dillon, managing
director at Barratt
Homes North Midlands,
said: “We are committed
to developing raw talent
and I believe that
companies such as ours
have a duty to provide
these kinds of internship
opportunities.
"The rewards are not only one-
sided, however; as a company, we
also benefit from the knowledge and
creativity that students like Muneni
and Marzia bring to the table.”
Gathered for induction day with Barratt and David Wilson Homes
North Midlands division at Eastwood Hall, Eastwood, are the new
intake of interns, from left, Muneni Chirinda, Ryan Kenton and Marzia
Mucchala.
