3. World War airplane production
1940 – 1944
in 1942 , all
construction materials
had to be conserved
for the war effort.
Because timber was
the main material
available, several form
of engineered wood
were developed. the
wartime methods of
prefabrication were
used by builders to
erect millions of tract
homes.

4. The Nagasaki bomb
ended World War II and
was the beginning of
individual freedom and
prosperity for
Americans. A hard-
earned reward for
years of collective
sacrifice.
Eventually two-thirds
of all American
families were home
owners.

5. In the years after the
war, couples who could
not afford families
during the Great
Depression made up
for lost time; the mood
was now optimistic.
During the war
unemployment ended
and the economy
greatly expanded;
afterwards the country
experienced vigorous
economic growth until
the 1970s.

Housing demands
were created by the
return of the American
soldiers and the brief
of modern living
was set.
The East Coast
continued to work with
traditional styles while
the West Coast
experimented more
freely that had a
twentieth-century
typology.

The Case Study House
(CSH) program was
initiated by Arts &
Architecture
magazine in 1945. The
thirty-six designs of
the program featured
low-cost, experimental
modern prototypes
during the years of
America’s post-World
War II building boom.
The CSH program
had thought-out plans
compared to a “cookie
cutter” approach.
