4. LEARNING FROM
THE FINANCIAL
CRISIS
My last assignment at Charles Schwab was re-build our
alternative investment custody business in the wake of the
Bernie Madoff scandal and the financial collapse of 2008.
That financial crisis uncovered serious flaws in our
operational due diligence processes and our risk and fraud
prevention operations. I was tasked with leading our cross
enterprise team to fix these systemic deficiencies. This was
the firm's number one internal project priority during a
dangerous and chaotic period in our industry. As such, I had
the support of the best internal resources Schwab had to
offer. I worked with the best project managers, the best
technical design people, the best attorneys and the best
fraud investigators. What I learned from this experience is
the value of top notch business partners. We've carried this
philosophy into our planning for Island City Remedies.
