Ensuring Long-Term Production in an Era of Short Component Lifecycles - Thomas Handojo news release
1. Interview with: Thomas Handojo,
VP Business Development, PCI Ltd
“The electronic component lifecycle is
becoming shorter due to improvements
in design and manufacturing
technology,” advises Thomas Handojo,
VP Business Development, PCI Ltd.
Handojo recommends that manufactur-
ers must have the engineering
capability to re-design the products in
order to sustain long-term production.
PCI Ltd is a solution provider at the
marcus evans Manufacturing CXO
Summit 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada,
September 29-30.
Which aspects of the supply chain
should US manufacturers focus on?
Why?
The key to a resilient supply chain is
finding the right partner. Having a
partner with the engineering capability
to re-design the product or find
alternative components ensures the
sustainability of long-term production.
Thus, supply chain partners should be
evaluated not just on cost but also their
engineering capability and their viability
to support the product for the whole
lifecycle.
How could they shorten the time to
market?
This is also connected to partner
selection. In the area of human-
machine interface, we have a number of
technology platforms that are ready to
be used; developed ahead of time in
anticipation that a customer will require
those solutions. By leveraging our
technology platforms, the customer can
potentially leapfrog one to two years
ahead of their competition.
Manufacturability is another factor
affecting time to market. The product
needs to be designed for efficient
manufacturing so that the products can
be built consistently and be launched on
time.
What does “manufacturability” take
into account?
To PCI, manufacturability means
adopting a holistic design approach to
find the most efficient solution early in
the product lifecycle.
We plan the product for industry
requirements, design best practices,
production capabilities, product cost
requirements, and of course, supply
assurance by selecting the right
components and supply chain partners.
What advice could you give on risk
mitigation?
Look beyond the standard risks. Besides
assurance of supply, the financial
stability of supply chain partners should
be considered.
A company with strong financials will
inherently be a more secure and safe
partner.
Supply chain
partners
should be
evaluated not
just on cost
but also their
engineering
capability and
their viability
to support the
product for
the whole
lifecycle
