Letter of Recommendation
To whom it may concern,
Mr Marc-André Poirier, born 19/05/1993, from the University of New Brunswick, Canada has
studied at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of
Cologne, Germany in the framework of the Cologne International Summer University 2014
(CISU 2014).
Taking place every August, CISU comprises two sessions and is designed for Bachelor's
and Master's degree students from the University of Cologne, its academic partners and
students from all over the world. The 4-week academic programme is complemented by
company visits as well as cultural and social activities. During the event, participants are
given the opportunity to interact with students from a broad range of backgrounds and cul-
tures, both in and out of class.
In session 1, Mr Poirier opted for the course ‘Strategic Entrepreneurship’ (Professor Steven
Phelan, Fayetteville State University, USA). The course focused on assessing ways to create
and capture value in a new venture. Students had a chance to learn to identify and explain
the strategic issues in setting up a new business, construct a business model as well as how
to structure and negotiate deals.

In session 2, Mr Poirier completed the course ‘European Energy Policies and Energy Eco-
nomics’ (Dr Susanne Nies, EURELECTRIC, Belgium). The course aimed at familiarising stu-
dents with energy basics such as the history of energy policies and energy in our societies,
energy supply and demand, European energy policy and the governance and economics of
electricity.
Marc-André Poirier excelled at both courses attaining excellent final grades.
During the short time we had the pleasure to host Mr Poirier, we valued him as an open,
diligent and cooperative student of the programme. Towards his fellow students he always
displayed supportive and friendly behaviour. Before and on his arrival in Cologne Mr Poirier
impressed us with his well-organised preparation concerning programme requirements.
Throughout his stay in Cologne, Mr Poirier showed great interest in the academic pro-
gramme, company visits and social activities. His overall performance was excellent and
exceeded our expectations by far.
Yours faithfully,
Moritz Ehlen
