Directorships and Personal Consulting
From 2005 until 2011 I was the Chairman of Transcend Consulting. This is an
International niche Change Management Consultancy with a professional staff of
some 12 consultants. I was appointed Chairman with a remit to support the
significant growth and profile of the business. In this period the business has
grown at a compound rate of 30% per annum and has a client list of more than
30 clients the majority of whom are International blue chip organizations. A
significant part of this growth has been a result of my leading a series of research
projects with the team to underpin some new thinking on change and its
leadership. As well as contributing to the development of the business I worked
on the more significant client assignments.
In addition to this role I undertook personal consulting with organizations
ranging from International oil companies to overseas governments. I continue to
undertake personal consulting assignments as an individual practitioner.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND INTEREST
Experience
My experience in both my current role and previous consulting roles has included
responsibility for obtaining client sponsorship for general research programmes
as well as selling the value of the research phase in specific consulting
assignments.

characteristics and processes associated with effective senior

thesis for my DBA.

performance in a life assurance company.

managerial competencies which will be required to deliver the

1993 Study of relationship between individual team member styles and
behaviour and effective contribution to creative problem-solving

1991 Four month study for major travel company examining customer
perceptions and implications in terms of service organisation and
managerial behaviour.
1990 Nine month study of customer and employee attitudes to service
and quality for a leading confectionery manufacturer. The results
of the research were used in introducing an empowerment
programme.
1988.1991 Three year study of the use and effectiveness of assessment
centres in six organisations. The study was the research for my
M.Phil.
1987 Study of insurance industry’s requirements for education and
qualification of staff. Results used by CII examination committee
for development of new examination structure.

Research Funding
In my role at Southampton I am involved in a current ESRC bid for £200,000 to
look at Prudence in the financial sector. I have also received a research funding
from a corporate (7,500 pa for three years) to explore CEO succession and talent
management.
Other funding obtained whilst at Southampton includes:

managers experiences in reform changes in the public sector

- I was a part of a team that won EU funding for our participation in
an Intereg project for 4 years. (Euros 2 million) – November 2009
I had only limited involvement in research funding bids at Henley as, at the time,
it was a private organization and did not engage in research bids generally.

However, until 2006 I secured three or four small projects (average funding
around £10,000). In 2007 I secured corporate funding (£75,000) for an employee
engagement research project.
In addition, at Henley I was involved in two “Centres of Excellence” in which
organizational members fund research in areas of interest to them. One of these
generated around £45,000 and the other around £50,000.
Supervisions
I am currently involved with some five Phd and seven DBA supervisions.
The majority of these relate to Leadership, Change, HR Strategy and Executive
Values.
To date I have supervised nine PhD and sixteen DBA supervisions to completion.
Examiners for these have included internationally and nationally recognized
scholars ( e.g. Richard Boyatsis, Paul Sparrow, Adrian Furnham).
EXTERNAL ROLES
External Examining
I have been involved in acting as an external PhD and DBA examiner for a wide
range of university business schools in the UK and Ireland (e.g. Cranfield, Aston,
Stirling, WIT).
In addition, I am an external examiner for the Open University for their MBA
programme, American University of Beirut for their HRM programme and WIT for
a range of their undergraduate business programmes.

This is an International niche Change Management Consultancy with a professional staff of some 12 consultants. I was appointed Chairman with a remit to support the significant growth and profile of the business. In this period the business has grown at a compound rate of 30% per annum and has a client list of more than 30 clients the majority of whom are International blue chip organizations. A significant part of this growth has been a result of my leading a series of research projects with the team to underpin some new thinking on change and its leadership. As well as contributing to the development of the business I worked on the more significant client assignments. In addition to this role I undertook personal consulting with organizations ranging from International oil companies to overseas governments. I continue to undertake personal consulting assignments as an individual practitioner. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND INTEREST Experience My experience in both my current role and previous consulting roles has included responsibility for obtaining client sponsorship for general research programmes as well as selling the value of the research phase in specific consulting assignments. Study commissioned by an international soft drinks company. 1992.1993 Six month study of roles and responsibilities of UK police officers. Published February 1993 by the Sheehy Inquiry. 1992 Contributed to a world-wide study of future requirements for HR strategy in multi-national organisations. Study funded by IBM. 1991.1992 Study of factors that make for effective teamworking in an international oil company. Results published in Management Education and Training (January 1993). 1991 Four month study for major travel company examining customer perceptions and implications in terms of service organisation and managerial behaviour. 1990 Nine month study of customer and employee attitudes to service and quality for a leading confectionery manufacturer. The results of the research were used in introducing an empowerment programme. 1988.1991 Three year study of the use and effectiveness of assessment centres in six organisations. The study was the research for my M.Phil. 1987 Study of insurance industry’s requirements for education and qualification of staff. Results used by CII examination committee for development of new examination structure. 1986.1987 Study of management development issues, needs and practices in the financial sector. Results incorporated into book published by MacMillan Press (1988). 1985.1986 Study of international practice in management development. Study commissioned for use by client organisation. 1982.1985 Study of the effectiveness of training packages in developing selling skills in retail banking. Current Research Interests I am currently involved in research in the following areas: Leadership, Change and Organisational Culture Values and Strategic Leadership The relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Talent Management Change Management Practices Top Team processes and effective team performance The requirements for the effective leadership of change The relationship of Emotional Intelligence to well-Being Antecedents of Employee Commitment Research Funding In my role at Southampton I am involved in a current ESRC bid for £200,000 to look at Prudence in the financial sector. I have also received a research funding from a corporate (7,500 pa for three years) to explore CEO succession and talent management. Other funding obtained whilst at Southampton includes: - Two year KTP to explore big data and employee engagement (£150,000) – October 2014 - Ministry of Interior of the Netherlands funding to explore middle managers experiences in reform changes in the public sector (with Erasmus University) Euros 50,000 – December 2014 - Youth Care Labour Fund in Netherlands to explore middle managers experiences in reform changes in the public sector (with Erasmus University) Euros 120,000 - January 2015 - Project Management Institute funding to explore dilemmas and ethical challenges in projects ($50,000) – September 2015 - Thames Valley NHS Deanery funding to explore innovation amongst junior doctors (£30,000) - January 2014 - CIPD funding for a project to explore implementation of culture change (£40,000) – March 2012 - Project Management Institute funding to explore the linkages between business strategy and leadership development ($ 40,000) – September 2010 - I was a part of a team that won EU funding for our participation in an Intereg project for 4 years. (Euros 2 million) – November 2009 I had only limited involvement in research funding bids at Henley as, at the time, it was a private organization and did not engage in research bids generally. 8
  • 9. However, until 2006 I secured three or four small projects (average funding around £10,000). In 2007 I secured corporate funding (£75,000) for an employee engagement research project. In addition, at Henley I was involved in two “Centres of Excellence” in which organizational members fund research in areas of interest to them. One of these generated around £45,000 and the other around £50,000. Supervisions I am currently involved with some five Phd and seven DBA supervisions. The majority of these relate to Leadership, Change, HR Strategy and Executive Values. To date I have supervised nine PhD and sixteen DBA supervisions to completion. Examiners for these have included internationally and nationally recognized scholars ( e.g. Richard Boyatsis, Paul Sparrow, Adrian Furnham). EXTERNAL ROLES External Examining I have been involved in acting as an external PhD and DBA examiner for a wide range of university business schools in the UK and Ireland (e.g. Cranfield, Aston, Stirling, WIT).
