2. MAJOR RECORD LABELS
The major record labels are:
- Universal Music Group
- Sony Music
- Warner Music Group
- EMI Group
These labels dominate and control the industry, and in a Niesen
SoundScan report in 2011 found that these labels controlled around
88% of the market – with Universal and Sony being responsible for
29% each.
3. INDEPENDENT LABELS
The definition of an independent record label (or "indie label") is
“a record label that operates without the funding of or outside
major record labels.”
Some independent labels are:
- Mad Decent
- Sub Pop Records
- Rough Trade Records
- Domino Recording Company
4. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Major record labels have more money, which has both positive and
negative aspects to it. These companies are able to provide high
quality music and videos, top advertising and major distribution – but
they’re money making industries, and will only offer the artist 10-
15% in royalties. Where as an independent company will offer
between 40-75% but do not have the budget for the high value videos
or editing, due to their budget.
Another major difference is the type of contract the artists sign, once
signing with a major label, all music produced is theirs – able to use it
in adverts or shows to their benefit. However, under an independent
the music will remain the artist’s, even once the contract has ended.
