Radiography Reflection.pdf
1. Reflection
Unfortunately I was unwell so missed the radiography practical so I was not able to
obtain an image of my specific vertebra. Despite this, I was able to find
radiographs on Radiopedia, which I could use.
Before learning about x-rays and the physics behind them, I thought only bones
were visible on radiographs but I was wrong.
This assumption came from the fact that in the past, when I have had x-rays they
diagnosed broken bones. However, one specific personal experience was when I
had a chest x-ray.
The front of my chest was right up against the x-ray detector and the x-rays were
fired posterior to anterior
This confused me as I was in hospital with an appendicitis scare and was confused
why they were x-raying my ribs and back. However, I think my biggest turning point
was after learning about x-ray attenuation and how soft tissue can also be visible
on a radiograph, it became clear to me that the drs would have been able to see
more than just the skeletal structures of my chest for a ample my heart and lungs.
I also found that the more radiographs I saw and was exposed to, the more
confident I became as able I was to notice more structures, not just bones.
Despite organs and soft tissue structures being visible on a radiograph they're not
as clear as on images produced by CT or MRI.
After learning about how radiographs are produced in comparison with MRI and
CT, x-rays only provide 2 dimensional images of a singular view, where as MRI and
CT produce 3 dimensional images.
From a diagnostic point of view x-rays are extremely beneficial for visualising
broken bones as a non- invasive, quick and painless modality
