2. The Emerging Scholars Program is a
unique opportunity for freshmen at the
University of Alabama to get engaged
in research early in their college
experience.
The program accepts approximately
220 new Scholars each Academic
Year. Through EMSP students learn
the fundamental concepts of research
and then partner with a faculty mentor
to take part in cutting-edge research in
departments across campus.
Emerging Scholars receive a $150 book
scholarship during both of their active
semesters in the program. For more
information about the program timeline,
please visit emergingscholars.ua.edu.
There are many reasons for you to get
involved in research during your college
career, including:
• Professional development
• Taking an active role in your field of
study
• Building relationships with faculty
and peers
If you think research is all about
test tubes, think again. While many
Scholars enjoy working in“traditional”
research fields, Emerging Scholars have
engaged in research in nearly every
department on campus. Whether you’re
interested in cybercrime or art history,
there is a research opportunity waiting
for you.
Curiosity is the only thing you need to
be an Emerging Scholar. You will learn
research skills through UA 155 and“on
the job”under the guidance of your
faculty mentor.
During your time in EMSP you will
learn to think critically about real-world
issues and to solve problems through
research.
As part of the program, you will present
your research at the annual University
of Alabama Undergraduate Research
and Creative Activities Conference.
After learning how to communicate their
research findings, some of our Scholars
go on to present at national conferences
in their field.
What is EMSP? Why Research? No Experience Necessary
