Editor's Notes
This open standard describes a mechanical design to modify regular COM Express® CPU board to fit in very rugged applications.
There are a lot of different form factors and standards for Computer-on-Modules available on the market. Some are driven by single companies as a proprietary solution and others are driven by organizations like VITA and PICMG. Most of the standards are designed to provide different customer solutions with a complex CPU board and an adapted simple carrier board for a dedicated application.
One of the most common standards for COMs on the market is PICMG COM Express®. This standard provides a modern platform for different CPU architectures like x86, PowerPC or ARM. The standard is mainly developed for commercial applications with limited requirements for thermal design, shock, vibration and EMC.
For more rugged applications like rolling stock, avionics and military the standard design of a COM Express® module is not feasible because of high temperature range, shock and vibration.
Typically for that kind of application the quantities are not high enough to make special designs for. In the meanwhile time to market is also really important.
With VITA59 it is quite easy to modify an existing COM Express® module without a redesign just by adding PCB wings for mounting inside a dedicated housing to fit for real harsh environments.
So it is possible to provide two solutions with one design at the same time. The standard module can be used for price critical applications and the VITA59 version for rugged applications.
All MEN boards are designed to work in an extended temperature range and use soldered components making the electronics resistant against shock and vibration. Conformal coating can protect them against humidity.
Conductive cooling is always possible – using COTS cards…
We really can guarantee fulfilling the environmental standards
Our products are designed for and tested, respectively, during the development – we do not try to get it fit later
We do a lot in house – lower risk, lower cost
EMV immunity
Electrostatic discharge immunity - ESD
Electrical fast transient immunity - Burst
Electrical surge current immunity - Surge
Conducted disturbances immunity - BCI
Standard and Custom Solutions
MEN does both, standard and custom (and everything in between)
The technology for standard products (show on the web) and full custom is close
For full custom solution, MEN has a rich base of standard products (this lowers the cost and minimizes the risk)
MEN is flexible – technically but also time-wise (because there is always the possibility to shift standard products..)
It is MEN's goal to find the most cost-effective solution for the application to be implemented. While using as many standard COTS components as possible, parts of the solution may include customization on:
System level
Board level
Component level (in FPGA)
Whether we deliver standard products or full custom developments or a mixture of both, MEN always guarantees:
Hardware design according to the V-Model
Software experience to optimize the performance of the hardware
Production knowledge to allow reliable production of highly integrated circuitry
Logistics support in order to deliver on time at any time
The understanding of applicable standards to meet the requirements of the different markets, e.g., EN 50129 (railways) or DO-254 (aerospace)
