Address anyone who is monitoring in both Parks and outside
Makes site selection & coordinating permissions easier and it provides liability coverage and even makes you eligible for receiving worker’s comp in some cases
You can also learn about and participate in other volunteer projects in the park system
I’ll walk you through what this looks like and some other considerations
Second step will be to select from existing sites on Parkland OR register one of your own. If you’re still having trouble with finding something accessible to you via the wetland layer on the locator map, email me at the address above and I will see if I can help!
This weekend is the perfect time to get out and start scoping out locations during the day.
Some species, like Spring Peeper & American Toad, may even be calling during the day after shaking off this little cold snap.
You can also go ahead and create a login in FieldScope like Ken showed you and start familiarizing yourself with that platform.
I will work w/Park Police and Park Mgrs to arrange notification and permissions and then send you some supporting docs electronically (and I’ll show you what those look like momentarily)
And then you can get going with making monitoring observations.
Note that we prefer you to have permissions before nighttime visits, but you are more than welcome to enjoy the parks and check out potential locations during normal hours of operation.
After every monitoring visit, the procedure is essentially the same as every other FrogWatch volunteer with entering your data to the national database, except we would also like you to log your hours in the Vol. Dbase, which I’ll demo tonight.
Let’s go through all of that step-by-step.
I am going to demonstrate it for you, but I also have a detailed document I will send that you can go back and reference.
[Describe process]
- Creating an account in the Volunteer Services Office (VSO) database
This link will take you to the Montgomery Parks registration page where you can review your role and responsibilities as a Montgomery FrogWatch volunteer again, so let’s go there…
After submitting, you will receive confirmation from the Volunteer Services Office who will notify me, and then we can work together to select 1 or more monitoring locations
You can email me with your selection(s) the same time all of this is happening; use the FrogWatch Locator Map to help you
As we work together determine those spots, I will coordinate with Park Police and respective Park Managers to let those individuals know who you are and where you’ll be (another very important reason you need to be in the VSO database)
Registered volunteers will receive a permission letter identifyingwho they are and where they will be.
You need to keep this on you while monitoring.
I will also include a car placard which you can leave behind displayed on your vehicle (car or bike) that will identify you to Park Police.
We suggest that you wear brightly-colored clothing for your safety (it also helps you when checking for ticks!)
Can get orange vest from MC Parks HQ in Wheaton or have it mailed to you
When you’re done monitoring, we want you to submit data both to the national dbase and as a volunteer for Parks.
