Poor Nutrition in low income neighborhoods
East (spanish)Harlem
“El Barrio” One of the largest predominantly Latino (Hispanic) communities in New York City. The neighborhood suffers from a high poverty rate and some say has little access to fresh high quality food “Food Desert”, although this might be more of an unbalanced mix of food choices.
Currently, Spanish Harlem has one of the highest obesity rates in the city with 2 thirds of its residents being overweigh or obese.
What is the context of this challenge?
“It would be nice to know what can I buy that is cheap but won’t be bad for me like junk food” - EdmeGacía Bodegas make up 87% of the food retailers in the neighborhood. Produce here is less fresh and more expensive. Farmer’s Market are not well known in the neighborhood.
How would it work?
Creating a system to inform where fresh and more nutritional food can be found. Providing educational material that also adapts to their cuisine.
