LUKE ADAMS TALKS TO ENGLAND'S LEADING BOWLER
James Anderson is desperate to help England triumph again in India after being forced to pull out of
the Bangladesh tour due to a stress fracture in his shoulder.
England’s all-time leading wicket taker in Test and ODI cricket has not played since the summer
series against Pakistan in August, but he has his mind set on joining up with the team in November
for what promises to be a challenging series against India, who are now ranked the No.1 Test side in
world cricket.
Anderson, speaking about his injury at the NatWest OSCAs, said: “It is a frustrating one. It is a stress
fracture, so my bone is basically broken. It is just a case of waiting for that to heal. It’s in an odd
place. I can do everything apart from bowl at the moment, but I have a scan in three weeks, so we
will see where we are.”
Desperate to be a part of England’s second winter tour, Anderson’s prevalence against India was a
vital component in 2012 when they recorded their first series victory in India since 1984/85.

This ranks highly in the Burnley paceman’s memories of playing against India – as well as an historic
partnership with Joe Root at Trent Bridge in 2014 – and he is hopeful of replicating the success of
the 2012 tour once more.
“The partnership with Joe was something that I look back on with fond memories. I really enjoyed
that. I think for me winning there [in India] in 2012/13 2-1 in the Test series, when we hadn’t won
there for nearly 30 years, was a huge achievement and something that I will remember with great
fondness for a long time.”
England’s most successful red-ball bowler against India became renowned for his hex over Sachin
Tendulkar and India’s fresh-faced skipper, Virat Kohli, appears to have taken over that unenviable
mantle.
During the 2014 home series – which England won 3-1 – Anderson removed Kohli on four occasions
at the expense of just seven runs, claiming 25 scalps across the series.
Commenting on his unparalleled success against the Little Master, Anderson said: “Sachin was
renowned for being their best player for a lot of those years that I bowled at him, so to get him out
was obviously crucial. Getting him out in India, where he is familiar with conditions, and his record is
much better in India than England, was a huge deal for me.”
Lancashire colleague Haseeeb Hameed is likely to become only the second teenager to open the
batting for England and the first in over a century after a remarkable summer for the Red Rose, but
Anderson believes he has the ability to thrive at Test level due to his impressive maturity.
“Having seen Haseeb at Lancashire over the last few seasons, I always thought that he’d go on to
play for England. Whether now is the right time, we’ll have to wait and see. I think he’s good enough.
He’s got a lot of quality and he’s got a really assured head on his shoulders. I think that kind of
attitude and mentality will stand him in good stead in international cricket.”
Despite falling out of favour in limited-overs cricket, Anderson yearns to be a part of the Lancashire
squad in all forms of the game at the start of the 2017 season, with the Champions Trophy meaning
that the first Test is not until early July.
“I’d love to play for Lancashire for a good stint. It would be great, because I’ve not had that for a
long time. I’d love to play all forms of cricket for Lancashire as well in that period if I possibly can.
With there being no cricket from January through to March, hopefully I can get my body in shape to
be able to cope with that.”
Anderson also gave his thoughts on the shocking revelations at the Riverside this week, after
Durham were relegated from the first division and handed a 48-point deduction for next season,
following an ECB bail-out over their financial difficulties.
“It is really tough. You could see what it meant to the Durham players after they won their
penultimate game to stay up and they also did Lancashire a favour in beating Hampshire in the last
game of the season to help us stay up. It is hugely disappointing to see that, but at the same time
we need a Durham County Cricket Club that is stable and that is producing the England players that
it has produced over the last few years. The penalty is what the ECB have come up with and in their
mind it is a fair penalty.”
Jimmy Anderson was speaking at the NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards (OSCAs),
which aim to recognise the contribution that volunteers make to the game. To find out more about
