2. The Story of Budi
As a child of a poor farmer, Budi tried to improve the standard of living of his
family. His parents were only able to send him to junior high school.
Nevertheless, Budi still aspires to continue his education to a higher level. In
1980, Budi went to the city, with his friend. In the city they sold newspapers in the
morning and went to school in the afternoon.
From the sale of newspapers, Budi financed his schooling, even to college.
Studying in college made Budi more knowledgeable about business ventures.
Budi no longer sold newspapers at the red light. He opened a newsstand and
magazines. Budi's business continued to progress, until it developed into a best-
selling bookstore.
Now, Budi has 4 branch bookstores that employ more than 200 workers. Budi,
whose past was the son of a poor farmer, has now become a respected
businessman in his city. Budi's success cannot be separated from his persistent
efforts.

Inter-generational mobility happens when the social position changes from one
generation to another. For example, a father worked in a factory while his son
received an education that allowed him to become a lawyer or a doctor.
The intra-generational change in societal position occurs during the lifespan
of a single generation. It can also refer to a change in position between
siblings. For example, an individual starts their career as a clerk and through
their life moves on to a senior position such as a director. One sibling may
also achieve a higher position in society than their brother or sister.
6. Case 1
Mr. Gayus is the son of a businessman who has a tea
plantation business in several places in West Java. Mr.
Gayus develops his business by opening a new business, it
is the mining business. However, Mr. Gayus' mining
business does not succeed in developing. Even his
plantation business continues to lose money until it finally
goes bankrupt. Now Mr. Gayus starts as a small
businessman, a tea sales agent.
7. Case 2
Mrs. Damaris Mendila is a teacher at a school in Papua
Province. As a social studies teacher, Mrs. Damaris
Mendila does her job well. Not only teaching, Mrs. Damaris
Mendila also carries out administration with full
responsibility. The various school activities which are her
responsibility are carried out properly. Because of her
various achievements, Mrs. Damaris Mendila was
appointed to be head of the school.
8. Case 3
Mr. Zaenuri is a principal at a junior high
school in East Java who has served for 8
years. The education office transfers Mr.
Zaenuri to another school and remains as
the principal.
