Sfântu Gheorghe is a village located in the easternmost part of the Danube Delta in Tulcea, Romania, 120 km from Tulcea and 35 km from Sulina. It is only accessible by water and offers wild, untouched beaches, the possibility of seeing wild horses, local cuisine, beautiful sunsets, and starry nights. Nature is prominent, with old willow trees lining the banks of the Danube Delta and providing habitat for birds. The delta contains 23 natural ecosystems and species from both steppe and Mediterranean influences. Boat trips allow visitors to discover a rich diversity of fauna on nearby lakes, including migratory birds, aquatic birds, and mammals.

1. Sfântu Gheorghe
Situated in the eastern extremity of Danube Delta, in the eastern part of
Tulcea town, at the distance of 120 km from Tulcea and 35 km from
Sulina. The village is bordered at the north by Crisan village and
Sulina town, at the east and south by the Black Sea and the west by
Murighiol village.

3. Cruising down the Danube Delta is simply an amazing
experience. Nature starts right after leaving Tulcea. All along
the banks are very old willow trees with impressively shaped
roots. They look like giant mangroves. The dead ones provide
ideal nesting opportunities to numerous rollers and (if you
are lucky) grey headed woodpeckers.

5. Actually the delta harbours 23 natural ecosystems
and many species, because the area forms part of the
Eurasian steppe and has mediterranean influences al
well.
Features that add to the biodiversity are the
gradients between dry and aquatic habitats, between
stagnant and streaming water and between fresh and
salt water.

6. The tourist who gets here for the first time will initially be ….confused, by a
space dominated by fluidity, by the acute lack of the equilibrium, by the
distances expressed in hours, by an apparent monotony of the reed or the
strange language of these “Lipovians”. It is now that he has made the first
mistake, for nothing is more disturbing to the locals in Sfântu than to be called
Lipovans. They will immediately tell you that they are Ukrainians, or ‘Haholi’,
and… they care very much about their identity.

7. During your boat trips, you will discover a rich and diversified fauna on the
nearby lakes. Migratory birds, aquatic birds and the presence of aquatic
mammals along with the Delta flora and the tranquility of nature make up the
scenery for a successful walk.
In Sfântu Gheorghe, you can return to clear your mind, to lose yourself as Jean Bart
used to say ”far into the wide, where the whitish streak of the Danube loses itself
in the eternal blue of the sea. “ And the village located at the edge of the map can
be the place where you can find yourself in order to have a brand new start.
