A basic introduction to constructing a simple search within the Health and Medical Complete Database. Sample search on "Female fetus" as a topic created for the IMED1108, Sem2, 2017.
1. Health & Medical Complete is a combination of
the clinical research titles in ProQuest Medical
Library with the additional titles of hundreds of
consumer and health administration titles.
Provides in-depth coverage from over 1,500
publication – 1,300 available in full text.
The database includes charts, diagrams, graphs,
tables, photos and other graphical elements.

2. Search OneSearch for the Health &
Medical Complete Database
Health & Medical Complete is available on the ProQuest Platform.
• ProQuest allows for keyword simple and advanced searches, as well
as ProQuest Subject headings and MeSH subjects.
• It covers all major clinical and healthcare disciplines including:
immunology, pharmacy and pharmacology, nursing, physical fitness
and hygiene, surgery, and medical sciences, etc.

3. Beginning your Search in
Health & Medical Complete
Health & Medical Complete is one of many databases delivered
through the ProQuest Platform
When you first open the database it will take you
to the Basic Search page. Please note that this
page is for very simple searches that only gives
you options to limit to Full text of Peer reviewed.
In this first search we are identifying any
articles with terms for “female fetus”. We use
double quotes to indicate “female fetus" as a
phrase and not as separate words.

limit refers to the
publication type.
The Publication
Date defaults to
search all dates.
MeSH stands for Medical Subject Heading
and is the National Library of Medicine’s
controlled vocabulary thesaurus. Any
record with MeSH is indexed in the
Medline/PubMed databases.
When a record has MeSH subjects
assigned to it, you will often see ProQuest
Subjects assigned to it as well.

The Source type limit
refers to the
publication type.
The Document type
limit is used to refer
to the format of the
full-text.
The Sort results by menu
controls the sort order of the
records that appear in the
results page. Sort by
relevance, date (oldest first),
or date (most recent first).
The Age group limits
provide a useful way to
limit results when an
age group limit is
relevant for your topic.

The use of limits has
greatly lowered the
number of results
Each record will contain links to the available
document formats and possibly any linking tools
to help locate the full text. Please consider that
not all records have full text available from
ProQuest and you may only have a link to view
the Abstract/Details (the full record).
