1. THE FRAGILE TIDE POOL
Home to Various Plants and Animals Be Safe! It can be dangerous out here
Plants and Animals Depend on Each Other
You can help protect us too!
Tidepools provide homes to loads of animals and plants. Can you
identify some of them? In this picture I can see lots of sea
urchins, an anemone, and even a bat star. If you look hard enough,
sometimes you can see crabs and octopus hanging in tide pools. Try
taking pictures of what you see and practice identifying them
when you get home!
Hi, I’m a Pacific Crab, but you can call
me Pat. I’d like to tell you about my
home, the tide pool!
You know how you have a family that you depend on? Well in
the tide pool we depend on all the other plants and animals.
Can you spot the old snail shell Mr. Hermit Crab lives in? If we
were taken out of our tide pool we would not survive very long.
A delicately balanced environment that must be respected and protected
Tide pools have lots of yummy algae and kelp, but sometimes
that can make them slippery for humans. Also, some animals
like sea urchins and other crabs can hurt you if you touch
them. If you don’t touch them, they can’t hurt you!
You should always remember that you are bigger and
stronger than the animals, so you can hurt them if you
aren’t careful. Also, trash and debris that you leave
behind can be seriously hurt or kill the animals here. The
best idea is to only leave footprints!
