Q1. Name the Literary work
The Family Guy episode “One If By Clam, Two If By Sea” involves a
subplot with Stewie trying to refine Eliza Pinchley, his new Cockney-
accented neighbor, into a proper young lady. He makes a bet with
Brian that he can improve Eliza's vocabulary and get her to speak
without her accent before her birthday party. This sub-plot is a
glaring parody of a certain Literary work, and the episode also
features the song “Life of The Wife”, another reference to said work.

Q2. What distinction does he hold?
Wataru Masaka, standing at 5’ 7”, is an American retired
professional basketball player. Born in 1923, growing up he
was a regular target of racial discrimination owing to his
ethnicity. Despite this he made it to his high school
basketball team. After high school, while many Japanese
Americans were being sent to internment camps due to
The Pearl Harbour attacks, he attended junior college at
Weber Junior College and won them two championships.
In 1947, he was selected to play for The New York Knicks,
and made history by achieving a certain distinction, which
seems rather surprising now.

Q8. ID the phrase
“X” didn't originate from that literal interpretation. Instead, the
phrase originally was used in conjunction with a type of horse race
popular in England in the 16th century.
Englishmen on a “X" would follow a lead horse that could go off in any
direction. The other riders had to follow the leader's course
accurately at precise intervals, kind of like wild _____ following their
leader in formation.

Q10. FITB/ Which painter was being talked about?
One of the scenes in the 2015 sci fi film Ex Machina involves the two main characters, Nathan, and Caleb, talking about
the differences between a human and an AI while looking at a painting by a painter, whose name has been blanked out
in the script given below:
NATHAN: Look over here. You know this guy, right?
CALEB: _______.
NATHAN: _______. He let his mind go blank, and his hand go where it wanted. Not deliberate, not random.
Someplace in between. They called it automatic art.
NATHAN gazes at the canvas.
NATHAN: Let’s make this like Star Trek, okay? Engage intellect.
CALEB: ... What?
NATHAN: I’m Kirk. Your head is the warp drive. ‘Engage intellect’. What if _______ had reversed the
challenge? Instead of trying to make art without thinking, he said: I can’t paint anything unless I know
exactly why I’m doing it. What would have happened?
CALEB: He’d never have made a single mark.
NATHAN: See? There’s my guy. There’s my buddy, who actually thinks before he opens his mouth. He’d
never have made a single mark. The challenge is not to act automatically. It’s to find an action that is not
automatic. From talking, to breathing, to painting.

Q12. What did Catherine of Braganza
popularize in Britain?
Travel back in time to 1662, when Catherine of Braganza (daughter of Portugal’s King John IV)
won the hand of England’s newly restored monarch, King Charles II, with the help of a very large
dowry that included money, spices, treasures and the lucrative ports of Tangiers and Bombay.
This hookup made her one very important lady: the Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland.
When she relocated up north to join King Charles, she is said to have packed ___ ______ as part of
her personal belongings; it would also have likely been part of her dowry. A fun legend has it
that the crates were marked Transporte de Ervas Aromaticas - although it is probably not true.
When Catherine arrived in England, __X__was being consumed there only as a medicine,
supposedly invigorating the body and keeping the spleen free of obstructions. But since the
young queen was used to sipping the pick-me-up as part of her daily routine, she no doubt
continued her habit, making it popular as a social beverage rather than as a health tonic

● IPoAC is an Internet protocol which was proposed by D. Waitzman on April 1,
1990, and was described in RFC 1149
● IPoAC has been successful implemented, but for only nine packets of data,
with a packet loss of 55% (due to operator error), and a response time ranging
from 3000 seconds to over 6000 seconds. Thus, this technology suffers from
poor latency. Nevertheless, this can be used to transfer large amounts of data
by using sneakernet.

Q2. Which TV show?
Andrew Davenport, a writer for a certain TV show, on where he got the inspiration
for it:
“ I was fascinated by the moon landings. It struck me as funny that, at this pinnacle
of human achievement, the figures that emerged in bulky spacesuits from landing
capsules are like toddlers, with oversized heads and foreshortened legs – and they
respond to the excitement of their new world by bouncing about. So I devised
characters based on spacemen.
I wrote the scripts in a caravan on the set in which I lived for weeks on end because
I had to adapt to the capabilities of the performers – at the start, they said they
couldn't walk on grass because their costumes were too unwieldy. The worst times
were when it had been raining for days, and I'd have to set the action indoors
because it was too wet to film outside. “

Catholic school and a lot of the teachers had done missionary work in ______. They told me how
they would bless the villagers, their Bibles, their books, their crops” - this is where the hook line
came from
Furthermore, Paich said that he wrote about the landscape from what he read in National
Geographic, and romanticised the lonely life of a missionary based on how he had imagined it.

Q4. What did X invent?
In the mid- 1970s, X, a teacher of design, was looking for a way to
demonstrate 3D motion to his students. One day, he found himself
looking at the river Danube, when he noticed how the river moved
around the pebbles on the river bed.
X took inspiration from this and began experimenting at his mother’s
flat with wood, rubber bands, and paper clips to make a prototype.
He decided that he needed some sort of code to give a sense of
movement to the user, and chose the simplest - primary colours.

Q5. ID X and Y
X was a quarterly journal of Southern Sudanese politics and current events published by the
Southern Sudan Association in London between 1970 and 1972. Enoch Mading de Garang was
the journal's co-founder and editor-in-chief. It was closely linked to the Southern Sudan
Liberation Movement (SSLM), the political arm of Anya-Nya, a collection of Southern Sudanese
separatist movements formed during the First Sudanese Civil War. The journal was published in
large part to generate wider support for the South Sudanese cause.
The phrase X referred to the oppression to hide the political strife in South Sudan and to
prevent it from gaining wider attention. X is meant to evoke another phrase Y which was used
to describe similar political division, and isolation between 1945 - 1991, and also evokes the
natural geography of the Sudanese region.

Vincent Connare, a typographer was tasked to work on Microsoft Bob, a program to make
computers more accessible for children. One of the parts of the program had a talking dog,
“Dogs don’t talk in Times New Roman”, he decided and went through The Dark Knight, and
Watchmen and attempted to recreate the fonts.
“I could have scanned it in and copied the lettering, but that was unethical. Instead, I looked at
various letters and tried to mimic them on screen. There were no sketches or studies – it was
just me drawing with a mouse, deleting whatever was wrong.”, he said, “I didn’t have to make
straight lines, I didn’t have to make things look right, and that’s what I found fun. I was breaking
the typography rules. My boss Robert Norton, whose mother Mary Norton wrote The
Borrowers, said the “p” and “q” should mirror each other perfectly. I said: “No, it’s supposed to
be wrong!” There were a lot of problems like that at Microsoft, a lot of fights, though not

The origins of this dish are disputed. One specific claim is recounted by Ali Ahmed
Aslam, A pakistani chef, proprietor of a restaurant in Glasgow:
“On a typical dark, wet Glasgow night, a bus driver coming off shift came in and ordered a
chicken curry. He sent it back to the waiter saying it's dry. At the time, Dad had an ulcer
and was enjoying a plate of tomato soup. So he said why not put some tomato soup into
the curry with some spices. They sent it back to the table and the bus driver absolutely
loved it. He and his friends came back again and again and we put it on the menu”

Aaron Parsons, a physicist at UC Berkley, is currently trying to upgrade his radio telescope,
called the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), to a total of 350 antennas in South
Africa. But this week, he found that the GPUs he needs to process data from all those antennas
doubled in price — from $500 to $1,000 apiece. That will cost an extra $32,000 that won’t go to
paying extra graduate student researchers.
“I kind of rolled my eyes a little bit,” Parsons tells The Verge. “I usually think of __X__ as some
kind of peripheral thing, and I was surprised and a bit annoyed to discover that it’s impacting the
bottom line of our telescope.”

Space Invaders is an arcade video game created by Tomohiro
Nishikado and released in 1978. It was originally manufactured
and sold by Taito in Japan, and was later licensed for production
in the United States by the Midway division of Bally. Space
Invaders is one of the earliest shooting games and the aim is to
defeat waves of aliens with a laser cannon to earn as many
points as possible.
During development, Nishikado noticed that the computer
hardware was not fast enough to render so many aliens on the
screen, thus slowing the game down when there were a lot of
aliens. However, instead of fixing this, Nishikado left it in and
hence made the game more challenging for its players.

Q5. What did they accidentally create, to
enter the snack industry?
Flakall Corporation, a Beloit, Wisconsin animal feed manufacturer switched gears
to producing snack foods, all thanks to the way the company cleaned its machines.
The company’s approach to producing animal feed was to put the material through
a grinder, effectively flaking out the corn to get as much material as possible from
the grain, as well as to ensure cows weren’t chewing any sharp kernels.
The grinder did its job, but it wasn’t perfect, and periodically required cleaning to
ensure it wouldn’t clog. One strategy that Flakall workers used was to put
moistened corn into the grinder. During this process, however, something unusual
happened: the moist corn ran directly into the heat of the machine, and when it
exited the grinder, it didn’t flake out anymore—it puffed up, like popcorn, except
without the annoying kernels.

  • 4. Q1. Name the Literary work The Family Guy episode “One If By Clam, Two If By Sea” involves a subplot with Stewie trying to refine Eliza Pinchley, his new Cockney- accented neighbor, into a proper young lady. He makes a bet with Brian that he can improve Eliza's vocabulary and get her to speak without her accent before her birthday party. This sub-plot is a glaring parody of a certain Literary work, and the episode also features the song “Life of The Wife”, another reference to said work.
  • 7. Q2. What distinction does he hold? Wataru Masaka, standing at 5’ 7”, is an American retired professional basketball player. Born in 1923, growing up he was a regular target of racial discrimination owing to his ethnicity. Despite this he made it to his high school basketball team. After high school, while many Japanese Americans were being sent to internment camps due to The Pearl Harbour attacks, he attended junior college at Weber Junior College and won them two championships. In 1947, he was selected to play for The New York Knicks, and made history by achieving a certain distinction, which seems rather surprising now.
  • 9. He was the first non-white player to play in The NBA
  • 10. Q3. Name the characters, or the video game thus made In 1981, ________ attempted to purchase the license for the Popeye comic strips in order to make a video game based on the love triangle between Popeye, Olive, and Bluto. • 11.
  • 14. Q4. ID X In 2005, at a celebration honouring Alan Greenspan, who was about to retire as chairman of the US Federal Reserve, X delivered a controversial paper that was critical of the financial sector. In that paper, "Has Financial Development Made the World Riskier?", X "argued that disaster might loom." The response to this paper at the time was negative, with X being called ‘misguided’, and ‘luddite’. However his views began to be seen as prescient by January 2009, during the 2008 economic crisis. X was interviewed extensively about the same for this reason in the Academy Award winning documentary Inside Job(2010)
  • 17. Q5. What is being talked about? Other names for this include ● La Monte-à-regret (The Regretful Climb) ● Le Rasoir National (The National Razor) ● Le Vasistas or La Lucarne (The Fanlight) ● La Veuve (The Widow) ● Le Moulin à Silence (The Silence Mill) ● La Cravate à Capet (Capet's Necktie, Capet being Louis XVI) ● Les Bois de Justice (Woods of Justice) ● La Raccourcisseuse Patriotique(The Patriotic Shortener)
  • 20. Q6. FITB In January 1967, NASA experienced its first major space age tragedy, and wanted to set up a program on safety protocols and promote awareness about the same. At the time, ______ , a fictional ace pilot was a household name, and was chosen by the astronauts to be the mascot of NASA’s safety program. During the Apollo 10, which was essentially a dry run for the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon, the modules were named after ______ and another character from the same series. Scientist noted that the ______ module was lost and never found, and is still floating around in space. Through the end of the '60s and beyond, ______ has continued to be an enduring and friendly icon for NASA — representing not only safety but also a curiosity and wonder.

Legal scholars doubt that ________-1 can be regarded as sovereign territory, and The Space Kingod of ________ has yet to achieve recognition as a nation state
  • 26. Q8. ID the phrase “X” didn't originate from that literal interpretation. Instead, the phrase originally was used in conjunction with a type of horse race popular in England in the 16th century. Englishmen on a “X" would follow a lead horse that could go off in any direction. The other riders had to follow the leader's course accurately at precise intervals, kind of like wild _____ following their leader in formation.
  • 29. Q9. What was the purpose of this additional connection? The controllers of the first Xbox console had an extra connection a few inches off the USB plug. This was an intentional design feature done to solve a problem which was common for console gamers at that time (Although it is unlikely to happen now owing to wireless controllers being the norm)
  • 31. To prevent the console from getting pulled down when someone trips on the wire
  • 32. Q10. FITB/ Which painter was being talked about? One of the scenes in the 2015 sci fi film Ex Machina involves the two main characters, Nathan, and Caleb, talking about the differences between a human and an AI while looking at a painting by a painter, whose name has been blanked out in the script given below: NATHAN: Look over here. You know this guy, right? CALEB: _______. NATHAN: _______. He let his mind go blank, and his hand go where it wanted. Not deliberate, not random. Someplace in between. They called it automatic art. NATHAN gazes at the canvas. NATHAN: Let’s make this like Star Trek, okay? Engage intellect. CALEB: ... What? NATHAN: I’m Kirk. Your head is the warp drive. ‘Engage intellect’. What if _______ had reversed the challenge? Instead of trying to make art without thinking, he said: I can’t paint anything unless I know exactly why I’m doing it. What would have happened? CALEB: He’d never have made a single mark. NATHAN: See? There’s my guy. There’s my buddy, who actually thinks before he opens his mouth. He’d never have made a single mark. The challenge is not to act automatically. It’s to find an action that is not automatic. From talking, to breathing, to painting.
  • 35. Q11. ID X and the name of the autobiography X’s 2017 autobiography, titled __ _________ ___, a reference to a critically acclaimed novel by Vikram Seth, explores his life in a personal capacity rather than the many professional hats he has donned over the years. In the book, he speaks about his illustrious journey in the movie industry, his relationships with his close friends and colleagues, and even touches upon his childhood, where he claimed to have been bullied for his weight issues and his effeminate side.
  • 37. X- Karan Johar An Unsuitable Boy
  • 38. Q12. What did Catherine of Braganza popularize in Britain? Travel back in time to 1662, when Catherine of Braganza (daughter of Portugal’s King John IV) won the hand of England’s newly restored monarch, King Charles II, with the help of a very large dowry that included money, spices, treasures and the lucrative ports of Tangiers and Bombay. This hookup made her one very important lady: the Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland. When she relocated up north to join King Charles, she is said to have packed ___ ______ as part of her personal belongings; it would also have likely been part of her dowry. A fun legend has it that the crates were marked Transporte de Ervas Aromaticas - although it is probably not true. When Catherine arrived in England, __X__was being consumed there only as a medicine, supposedly invigorating the body and keeping the spleen free of obstructions. But since the young queen was used to sipping the pick-me-up as part of her daily routine, she no doubt continued her habit, making it popular as a social beverage rather than as a health tonic

  • 70. Q2. Which TV show? Andrew Davenport, a writer for a certain TV show, on where he got the inspiration for it: “ I was fascinated by the moon landings. It struck me as funny that, at this pinnacle of human achievement, the figures that emerged in bulky spacesuits from landing capsules are like toddlers, with oversized heads and foreshortened legs – and they respond to the excitement of their new world by bouncing about. So I devised characters based on spacemen. I wrote the scripts in a caravan on the set in which I lived for weeks on end because I had to adapt to the capabilities of the performers – at the start, they said they couldn't walk on grass because their costumes were too unwieldy. The worst times were when it had been raining for days, and I'd have to set the action indoors because it was too wet to film outside. “
  • 73. Q3. Name the song and the artist David Paich, who was responsible for the lyrics of the song ______, had in fact, never been to ______. “One of the reasons I was in a rock band was to see the world. As a kid, I’d always been fascinated by ______. I loved movies about Dr Livingstone and missionaries. I went to an all-boys Catholic school and a lot of the teachers had done missionary work in ______. They told me how they would bless the villagers, their Bibles, their books, their crops” - this is where the hook line came from Furthermore, Paich said that he wrote about the landscape from what he read in National Geographic, and romanticised the lonely life of a missionary based on how he had imagined it.

One of the parts of the program had a talking dog, “Dogs don’t talk in Times New Roman”, he decided and went through The Dark Knight, and Watchmen and attempted to recreate the fonts. “I could have scanned it in and copied the lettering, but that was unethical. Instead, I looked at various letters and tried to mimic them on screen. There were no sketches or studies – it was just me drawing with a mouse, deleting whatever was wrong.”, he said, “I didn’t have to make straight lines, I didn’t have to make things look right, and that’s what I found fun. I was breaking the typography rules. My boss Robert Norton, whose mother Mary Norton wrote The Borrowers, said the “p” and “q” should mirror each other perfectly. Flakall Corporation, a Beloit, Wisconsin animal feed manufacturer switched gears to producing snack foods, all thanks to the way the company cleaned its machines. The company’s approach to producing animal feed was to put the material through a grinder, effectively flaking out the corn to get as much material as possible from the grain, as well as to ensure cows weren’t chewing any sharp kernels. The grinder did its job, but it wasn’t perfect, and periodically required cleaning to ensure it wouldn’t clog. One strategy that Flakall workers used was to put moistened corn into the grinder. During this process, however, something unusual happened: the moist corn ran directly into the heat of the machine, and when it exited the grinder, it didn’t flake out anymore—it puffed up, like popcorn, except without the annoying kernels.
