1.0 INTRODUCTION.
The constitution of GHACCO; article 10 clause 59, stipulated the establishment of Regional Steering Committees to coordinate its activities
regionally. The clause 60 of article 10 emphasized that, the elected membership of the Regional Steering Committee shall not be more than
five (5). They included the positions of; Regional Coordinator, Financial Secretary, Secretary, Treasure and PRO. Their duties to include
representing and promoting GHACCO in their respective regions and working to implement the short-term plans and long-term strategies
of the Alliance in their region. Also to support the stakeholders in the region in planning and implementing regional outreach activities for
awareness raising and promotion cookstoves and fuels among others.
It is of this reasons Mr Raymond Kusorgbor, the Program Officer of GHACCO, travelled to the Volta Region on Monday February 22 to
Saturday 27, 2016 as part of his official duty to engage with stakeholders in the cookstove and fuel sector, collect information and data, and
undertake other assignments of promoting the sector. This was geared towards preparation for electing Volta Regional Steering Committee
of GHACCO.

3.0 THE PICTURE REPORT ON VOLTA REGION.

Program Officer arrived in Tongu South District of the Volta Region, Sogakope. A brief presentation on GHACCO initiatives and its
activities was carried out to educate and solicit regional support at the District Assembly. The names and contact of participants during the
presentation is captured on the data sheet of number 43 to 59.
Also, contacts has been established with distributors and retailers of improved cookstoves in the district. Their products sold include; stove
burners, gas cylinders, traditional stoves, and local cooking pots manufactured from melted aluminum among others. The pictures are
below as indicated in Figure 4 and 5.

GHACCO has established contact with the bakers through the District Health and Environmental Unit (Kingsley Yevutsey:
kingsleyyevu@gmail.com, 0244982169, 0209048468) to carry out awareness campaign in future on impacts of wood fuel, and the House
Air Pollution on their health. Below is Fig 7 and 8 respectively are metal fabrication of stoves and ovens at Central Tongu District

The metal fabrication and local artisans were educated on GHACCO initiatives and invited for the Steering Committee Election

The Rural Enterprise Program of Adidome, has Technology Training Center specializes in welding, fabrication of metals, building of agro-
processing machines among others. The facility, established in 2012 under the government’s Rural Enterprise Project is aimed at building
the capacity of rural folks to stimulate entrepreneurship, fabricate clean cookstoves technologies, help create jobs, and improve livelihoods

The academic institutions visited included; Zion Collage, Keta Senior Technical High school, Angola Senior High School, Atorkor Vocational
Institute, Keta Business School among others. This is to mobilize and educate them on adoption of institutional stove models and also to
join GHACCO. Other health institutions visited included Keta Municipal Hospital, the Ketu South Health Directorate, Ho Municipal
Hospital, Sogakope District Hospital to leverage support for awareness campaign on health impacts of Household Air Pollution.

The fishing communities of Angloga, Keta, Denu and Aflao were visited. The picture above shows samples of traditional fish ovens
without chimney outlets, which consume a lot of wood fuel with its associated smoke inhalation are commonly seen in use.

The Program Officer provided brief education of women on impacts of their activities on Household Air Pollution. Also traditional three

stone fire still in use (bottom left corner picture above) and source of energy is wood fuel from mangroves from the lagoon conservation
protected zones.

Many cookstoves metal fabrication shops were visited. They were educated and informed about GHACCO initiatives and activities. They
requested for interventions to enhance their technical capacity needs in the industry.

The Gratis Foundation Technical Workshop, in Ho was visited to access their status of operation and their contribution to the cookstoves
sector. Mr Eric Kwame Anim Gratis Foundation, Workshop Manager (0247245451) conducted the Program Officer around the facility. A

newly manufactured ovens and other general metal work products and machines were exhibited on arrival. The bottom left corner, is a
local Metal fabrication unit at Kpando operated by Mr Richmond with the telephone number: 0503927990

Some of the distributor and retailers of the cookstoves, gas cylinders, ovens and burners were contacted. Interaction with them shows
many of them lacks basic marketing and book keeping skills for their business sustainability. Training has however been offered to their
counter parts in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Region. They expressed greater optimism that, joining GHACCO would help them have
similar capacity trainings.

Majority of the stove retailors are concentrated in at Ho, Nkwanta South and Nkwanta North District of the Volta Region. They expressed
interest in selling other brands of Improved Cookstoves such as Cook Mate, Toyola, Gyapa, and Envirofit among others.
4.0 CONCLUSION.
The stakeholder platform in the Volta Region have little or no information on GHACCO initiatives. A brief encounter and education on
GHACCO initiatives generated a lot of interest. Investigations carried out suggested that the use of internet for mailing and communication
purpose is less use for facilitating meeting arrangements. The local community radio stations for program announcement and education on
projects initiatives prior to hosting events are commonly adopted options. The Volta Region demonstrate enormous potentials for the
cookstove sector business to capitalize on. Funding is therefore needed to undertake major cookstove projects in the region like awareness
creation, institutional cookstoves adoption project for the fishing communities and schools, among others.
