Top 10 steps to starting an eReader program
1. Top 10 things to think
about as you begin your
journey towards an
effective eReader
program.
2. Beginnings....
• What are the needs of your students?
• Once you have identified what specific needs
need to be addressed than the second
question becomes “How can we increase
student engagement and transliteracy skills
using eReaders?”
• If some of the needs of your students can be
met continue on
• If they are not ready, what do you need to do
to build those transliteracy skills?
3. Evidenced Based Practice:
The 'Paper' Trail.
• Create a “paper trail” as you begin your
journey:
o Blogs
o Journals
o Documents
• Be sure to record the process,
problems, questions and reflections,
providing an Evidenced Based Practice
reflection for your stakeholders and for
others to use as an exemplar.
• See Travis Jonker's 100 Scope Notes
blog for an example
4. Check the Tech!
• Plan a meeting with your district tech
team to find out what the expectations
of wireless devices are – will you be
able to allow them to leave the school
without a filter or will they have to
remain in the building?
• Different districts/schools may have
different expectations and you need to
know up front what will be expected of
you and the eReaders you purchase.
5. Don't forget the Bosses!
• Check with administrators or division
leaders regarding policies such as
• purchasing
• storing
• cataloguing
• circulating
• Has someone already done the work
for you or will you be the one blazing a
new trail?
6. Use your PLN!
• Read and learn about the journey of
others so you can avoid their pitfalls
and learn their shortcuts to see if they
are applicable to you.
• Check out our resource/cheat sheet to
see a list of bloggers, tweeters and
hashtags to add to your PLN).
7. Colleagues
• Begin discussions with colleagues to
get another perspective regarding
policies and procedures
• If they are included in the process,
they will be more willing to promote
and implement eReaders
8. Choose your Device
• Investigate what type of eReader will
best suit the needs of your students
and staff.
• Determine your deal breakers: for
example check into vendor purchase
procedures.
• Schools and libraries are not the
intended market for vendors, so you
will have to work with them and not the
other way around – which vendor best
suits your purchasing procedures?
9. Set up your Documents
• Use and adapt existing forms (with
permission of course) such as
inventory, purchasing forms, and
feedback forms.
• Many are freely shown and available
online.
• See the "The Three Librarians" stories
on the wiki below to see examples
10. Purchase your Devices
and load on the books!
• Set up your accounts with the carrier
you have chosen
• Consider the needs of your collection
• Consider the needs of your users
• Put some high interest books to get
students and staff started
11. Set up your Devices
• Experiment with and be familiar with
whatever device you decide to use
and then provide PD for staff.
• Remember you can empower your
students by creating a SWAT team
(Students Willing to Assist with
Techinology) to implement and
troubleshoot eReaders.
• Be flexible and willing to change and
adapt – changes occur quickly.
12. Monitor and Share
• Collect, collate and share feedback
with students, staff, admin and parents
to show strengths and ways the
eReaders are influencing learning in
your building, modeling evidence
based practice.
13. The end of the Journey
• Collect, collate and share feedback
with students, staff, admin and parents
to show strengths and ways the
eReaders are influencing learning in
your building, modeling evidence
based practice.
...or is it the Beginning?
