1. Board Meeting Notes
9-22-15
1. Focus Groups: Discussion about focus groups that happened with community
members. Talk about having focus groups that include JSD employees. What is most
important to you? Discussion about how to use the information that has already been
collected. Priorities included art, minimal testing, physical education, pay, and many
other items.
2. Bonds: Debt will be paid off soon. Because enrollment is increasing (growth
happening in the valley) it is not feasible to pay off the old bond before going into a new
bond. Tax payers will pay the same amount and rates would have to stay consistent.
Numbers presented tonight are for illustration purposes rather than being concrete
numbers to help aid in making a decision. Six to eight months before bond election will
happen. Slides included: tax impact scenario matrix ($287.000 residence),
3. Preschool programs and full-day kindergarten discussion: space and finding ECE
teachers are issues. CTE, Head Start, and Title 1 programs include pre-school. How do
we know that these programs are self-sustaining?
4. General Session: Elk Ridge Middle School celebrated.
5. Anthony Godfrey appointed assistant superintendent of schools.
6. Patron comments: Megan Strong-representing middle school feeder teachers-proposing
that middle schools be able to charge a fees for musical performances. Asking for $5
admission charge.
Alexandria-we need more money, she wants families who have more than two children to
start donating to schools to pay for their own child’s education.
West Jordan gave the board a thank you for the renovations done at their school.
General business consent for agenda items.
Motion to accept consent agenda items (have 6 open teacher positions within the district).
Bids for information systems servers, Blackridge Elementary computers, and ice cream to
sell to students.—All passed.
Public hearing: boundary changes (Jill Durrant),--Passed
Recommendation to approve capital outlay projects for Summer—debate over this
issue—Mr. Young had strong opinions to wait on this issue and did not feel that he had
sufficient time to make his voice heard and wants the issue put on the agenda within the
next 30 days regarding West Jordan enrollment—A new motion was made to have the
2. proposal reevaluated by the finance committee and done as a bid alternate-2 no votes, the
substitute motion passes.
Year-round to traditional payroll transition—motion passed

-Discussion about student achievement survey of high school student government

etc…

-Possibility of closing a West Jordan School, possibly Majestic Elementary.
Recommendation from the district is to keep all West Jordan School’s open. There are
too many classrooms to be housed nearby plus preschool. Consider moving additional
programs to West Jordan Elementary to help fill it. Consider needed improvements to
school.
-Preschool service has to be done in the home if there is not school space, however,
busing would be needed. Mileage is paid for those doing in home services. No decision
made.
-West Jordan middle school proposed boundary changes. Suggestions: change only when
necessary, use portables, avoid disrupting families, traveling teachers, seventh-period
authorizations to increase capacity. Vote to keep schools open.

Survey Falcon Ridge only because it could be a temporary move but Rose Creek would
