Avraham Burg
For over 20 years Avraham Burg has been a leading figure in Israeli politics and
a staunch supporter of peace in the Middle East. He was the youngest speaker in
the history of the Israeli Knesset (1999-2003) and served a 5 year term as head of
the Jewish Agency for Israel. He was the first NIF Leadership Fellow in 1983, and
served on the NIF International Board from 1985-1988.
Raquel H. Newman, Ed.D.
We proudly honor Dr. Raquel Newman with the Guardian of Democracy Award
in recognition of her enduring and superlative dedication to strengthening
Israel’s democracy. She has been involved with NIF almost since its inception in
1979, taking leadership roles in virtually every aspect of the organization. She
served on the International Board in the 1990s, just completed her term as
President of the San Francisco Regional Board, and continues to serve on the NIF’s
International Council. She has earned respect locally and internationally for her
commitment to the Jewish community, tzedaka, social justice, and pluralism. She
is a remarkable person to whom NIF owes much of its continuing success.
Dr. Newman is President of RHN Associates, and has been a consultant and writer
for and about not-for-profit organizations. Author of the philanthropy guide
Giving Your Money Away, she continues to serve as a board member for an
incredible variety of organizations, most notably Jewish Family and Children’s
Services, Fromm Institute of Lifelong Learning, Congregation Emanu-El, The
Graduate Theological Union, the New Israel Fund, Achenbach Graphic Arts
Council of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Pacific Graduate
School of Psychology. Dr. Newman also received an honorary Ph.D., doctor of
humane letters, from the Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles.
Dr. Jonathan Fuchs
Dr. Jonathan Fuch’s love and appreciation for Israel were nurtured as a student
at the Hebrew University in 1990 and as a Dorot Fellow in Jerusalem from 1991
to 1992. He brings this same passion to his role as Chair of the New Generations
Board. He became a New Generations Board Member in 2002, and served as a Co-
Chair of the Education Committee. He is currently both the Director of HIV
Vaccine Studies at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and an assistant
clinical professor of medicine at UCSF. He has extensive experience with training
international clinical trial sites to conduct prevention research in HIV.
As a San Francisco regional board and international council member, Jonathan is
committed to ensuring that the New Israel Fund continues to flourish in its
mission to support voices for democracy and inclusion in Israeli society.
