T
o describe the year as busy would be an understatement. Every
corner of MMU has been abuzz with activity most notably the
year long process towards the attainment of ISO 9001:2008
Certification.
While this was ongoing, the academic division was training and
teaching students to ensure that the university released of competent
graduates. The team has also worked tirelessly to create industry
focused post-graduate programmes to be launched in the near future.
It is no small feat to achieve as much as we have when we are as young
as we are. However, this was not through our efforts alone. We are
blessed with great supportive industry partners who also share in the
joy of this day.
I welcome our readers to enjoy this publication which presents a
highlighted tour of this great institution. Marvel at the ingenuity of
our students whose innovations attract unparalleled interest from the
community and experienced innovators and industry players.
We re-introduce you to the amazing Daniel Owira, commonly referred
to as Otonglo, who recently joined MMU in pursuit of his dream to
becomeafilmdirector.Heexplainshisaspirationsandplanstomanage
what will undoubtedly be a taxing academic and artistic life.
In light of this, I foresee a bright future for MMU and I welcome our
alumnus and valued partners to stay with thus through the journey.
We remain eternally grateful for their input as we continue to intensify
our local and international footprint.
Cheers to the graduating class of 2016!

Our university has become a
favourite choice for students
seeking university education.

Hon. Catherine Kimura (Dr)
I
t gives me much joy to officiate at
the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of
Multimedia University of Kenya
(MMU) since we became a chartered
public university. On my own behalf
and that of the Council, the Executive
Management, all staff and students
of MMU, I am delighted to welcome
everyone to this ceremony.
I appreciate the dedicated men and
women whose efforts have culminated
in today’s ceremony. Those graduating
today dedicated many hours of study
and disciplined work even when
the going was tough. Parents and
guardians sacrificed to provide financial
support and much needed love to the
graduands. The lecturers worked hard
to enable them to acquire both the
knowledge and skills that will help them
to make a difference in their lives and in
the wider society.
Administrative and support staff
ensured that learning took place in
a conducive environment and the
University Management provided the
overall good leadership and dedication
to service. Many of our external
stakeholders have also supported
us in various ways. To all of you, I say
Asanteni sana.
AsMMU,werecognisetheuniquerolewe
have to play in a fast-evolving education
sector. As a technical university, we strive
to prepare graduates for the complex
professional roles in a technologically
advancing world. I am pleased to note
that we have excelled in doing this
beyond expectations.
In order to perform even better, we
need to augment the good support
we are getting from our government
by fostering new collaborations that
will enable us to keep abreast of
expensive but necessary technological
advancements. We cannot do this alone.
We therefore need to continuously seek
public private partnerships.
As the Chancellor, I am certain that the
graduands we are presenting to the
world today have been adequately
prepared to help this country realise
its vision 2030. This is because of
the positive and glowing reports we
continue to receive from employers who
have engaged and continue to engage
our graduates.
In the last one year, our university
has invested resources in laudable
infrastructural developments. These
include the construction of the
perimeter wall, the building of an
office and lecture hall block, the
relocation of the CDB campus and the
acquisition of an additional university
bus and ambulance. These have been
occasioned by the rising student
population and the need to diversify
our programme offerings.
Our university has become a favourite
choice for students seeking university
education. During the 2016 Kenya
Universities and Colleges Central
Placement Service (KUCCPS) intake
for public universities, our academic
programmes emerged the most
competitive. MMU filled its declared
capacity during the first selection
exercise.
The enrolment of self-sponsored
students in the last year has also grown
considerably. We therefore need to
grow the institution in terms of physical
and other resources. This need is more
urgent as we plan to launch post-
graduate programmes early next year. In
this regard I urge the Cabinet Secretary
to push for an increase in capitation for
young universities such as ours.
Let me conclude by addressing the
class of 2016. Congratulations! You have
done well and we are very proud of you.
As you step out into the world, keep
the values that we hold so dear here at
MMU: the love for each other, integrity
and above all, service to humanity. Be
our good ambassadors and encourage
others to join MMU.
We hope to see most of you coming
back to enrol in our post graduate
programmes next year!

Dr. Fred Matiang’i
Cabinet Secretary,
Ministry of Education, Science and
Technology (MoEST)
I
t is a great pleasure to be part of the
graduation ceremony at Multimedia
University of Kenya today. This
university has grown exponentially
since it was chartered just over three
years ago.
Icongratulateyounotjustforgraduating
another class, but also for the great
progress you have made in the last one
year. One of the great achievements is
the construction of a perimeter wall that
has given the university a face-lift.
We are gathering to celebrate the
achievements of the young men and
women who graduate today with
diplomas and degrees from various
disciplines.
Many of these young people will find
employment in various fields, thanks
to the steadily growing economy
of our country. And because of our
government’s dedication to empower
the youth and women through
facilities such as the youth enterprise
development fund, some of them will
start up their own enterprises.
Whatever path you take, remember that
there is room for you to pursue further
education so that you can help us build
our country’s knowledge economy. I
am aware that the MMU Senate has
in the recent past approved eight (8)
masters’ programmes, while 12 others
are scheduled for approval before the
end of this year. I urge you to make use
of these opportunities.
As we strive to improve our institutions
of higher learning, we need to promote
quality service delivery. This will enable
us to compete globally. I am therefore
happy to note that MMU is now ISO
9001:2008 Certified. This achievement
demonstrates your commitment
to providing quality education and
training, and also research and
innovation.
Allow me to address the latter two
areas of research and innovation. If
our country is to remain relevant, we
need an educated citizenry that can
support a constant flow of research
and innovation; for us to sustain our
intellectual competitiveness. You need
therefore to enrich your teaching
through continuous engagement in
researchandinnovation.Thisishownew
knowledge is generated, economies are
strengthenedandsocietiestransformed.
You should also strive to establish more
strategic linkages and partnerships with
industryleadersandforeignuniversities.
These will greatly enrich your teaching
and curriculum development and also
contribute to your income generation
for self-sustainability.
In this regard I applaud your efforts to
introduce new academic programmes in
the Faculty of Science and Technology.
These new programmes, such as the
Bachelor of Science in Applied Optics
and Lasers and the Bachelor of Science
in Renewable Energy, will in the long
run provide the country with high-level
expertise that will drive our country’s
industrialization agenda in line with
Vision 2030.
I must commend MMU Management
for realising ethnic diversity in your
staff profile. This is according to the
recent report by the National Cohesion
and Integration Commission (NCIC)
on Ethnicity and Diversity of Public
Universities in Kenya. As a university,
you have shown that progress can be
achieved when different communities
and genders work together. You are a
beacon of hope in our country.
To the graduating class of 2016, accept
my hearty congratulations. Go out into
the world and make a difference. Your
country needs you – and the knowledge
and skills that you have acquired - to
improve the lives of our people. Please
serve your country and ensure that your
legacy is felt long after you are gone.
But for now, savour the moment and
make merry for you have earned it.
As we strive to improve
our institutions of higher
learning, we need to promote
quality service delivery. This
will enable us to compete
globally. I am therefore happy
to note that MMU is now
ISO 9001:2008 Certified. This
achievement demonstrates
your commitment to

Dr. Herbert Misigo Amatsimbi
I
t gives me great pleasure to address
the gathering of the Multimedia
University of Kenya 2016 graduation
ceremony. It is indeed a joyful moment
for all us to gather together to celebrate
the fruits of our hard work. May I take
this earliest opportunity to congratulate
all those graduating today, Hongera
sana.
It is just over three years since MMU
received a charter from the Commission
for University Education (CUE). As we
hold our third graduation ceremony
since we began operating as a fully-
fledged public university, we are
proud to observe that there is steady
and sure progress in the growth and
development of our university.
In 2016, student enrolment grew by
12.3% to reach a total of 5,500 students.
Similarly, there has been a steady rise
in the number of students graduating
from the various faculties.
Further, the number of faculties at the
university continue to grow. Plans for
two additional faculties - the Faculty
of Social Sciences and the Faculty
of Education and Technology have
now been approved by the university
Senate and are ready to be launched.

the growth and development
of our university.”
In addition, our Senate has approved
twenty new programmes to be rolled
out at the start of 2017.
To respond to this growth, the Council
has approved several projects which are
currently being implemented. We are in
the process of constructing a new block
that will provide additional teaching
space and offices. At the same time,
we are constructing a perimeter wall
around the university to boost security
and ensure a conducive learning
environment.
The Council also approved the
renovation of the Multimedia University
Hotel. This is expected to improve the
image of the hotel and enhance the
quality of services provided to our
clients.
The University Council acknowledges
and greatly appreciates the efforts of the
University Management in steering the
university. The Council is well aware of
the great talent and diversity among our
staff members: it is no wonder that the
Cohesion and Integration Commission
recently singled out the Multimedia
UniversityofKenyaforensuringdiversity
in recruitment of its staff. MMU is a true
microcosm of the larger Kenyan society.
As the management and faculty work
hard to ensure quality education for our
students, the University Council wishes
to assure you of our support.
It is in this spirit that quality measures
initiated by management, such as the
ISO 9001: 2008 certification that was
achieved this year and that we are
celebrating today, have been supported
by the council. We encourage you to
ensure that these and other quality
measures are not only developed but
implemented fully.
To our dear graduands, we release you
today as ambassadors of this wonderful
University.Gooutthereandbuildagood
name for yourselves and the university.
As you join the workforce, apply the
skills and knowledge ingrained to you
by your lecturers.
The world will judge us by the quality
of your work and products. Remember
that you, in turn, are our products
and the world will therefore judge us
based on your performance. As you
separate from your classmates, friends
and lecturers, never underestimate the
value of networking. It is my hope that
the Multimedia alumni will form a great
network that will influence the direction
of our country.
I conclude by urging you to strive to be
the best that you can be, and to always
strive to positively influence the world
around you.
Once more, congratulations to you our
graduating students.
May God bless you, may God bless our
university.

great occasion in which we present
over 900 quality graduates who
are well prepared to join the rest of
Kenyans in nation building. The entire
MMU community wishes you the very
best on this important occasion.
This university enjoys a positive
reputation with both internal and
external stakeholders. This year,
our engineering programmes were
accredited by Engineers Board of
Kenya which is in line with Kenya’s
Vision 2030 plans on Industrialization.
We have made enormous progress
this year. The student population
has tremendously grown; thirteen
academic programmes from diploma
to graduate level have also been
developed from our four faculties.
About five staff members were
awarded doctorate degrees in media,
information technology, business and
psychology from various universities
in Kenya. We congratulate and are
proud of all the staff for their academic
achievements.
Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement
Services (KUCCPS) report of 2016 indicates
that MMU was the first university whose
course capacity was fully occupied which
demonstrates stakeholder’s confidence in
our programmes.
To accommodate the growing number
of students, the MMU CBD Campus has
relocated to Uniafric House, Loita Street.
Our new campus is spacious, accessible
and provides conducive learning
environment. In addition, the construction

availed research funds to support about
six university staff in various research
activities.
In the just concluded 2016 Nairobi
International Trade Fair, MMU scooped
Data Services and Telecommunication
award, a repetition of last year when the
university emerged the best in the same
category. This is an indication of the
expertise utilised in the training of the
graduands. We congratulate all faculty
and staff that walked and worked with
our students to enable them achieve
this success.
To the graduands congratulations. Be
proud of what you have worked to
achieve and remember those who have

A
s we celebrate the 3rd graduation
ceremony and launch of ISO
9001:2008 Certification, it is
important to realize that for modern day
education to have a greater impact on
society, the learning environment must
be supportive, conducive and inspiring.
Therefore, the capacity of any university
to deliver quality education largely
depends on both short-term and
long term strategies of continual
improvement.
It is for this reason that I am truly
humbled to be part of a vibrant team
at Multimedia University of Kenya
at a time when the university is
undergoing continual improvement
of infrastructural, policy and human
resource development programs aimed
at promoting innovative training, secure
learning, cutting edge research and
viable income generation.
While addressing shortage of office
spaceandlecture theatres,theuniversity
is undertaking the construction of a
four storey complex whose phase-
one is expected to be complete by
January 2017. The University has also
enhanced its transportation fleet with
an additional 51-seater bus, ambulance
and a mini-bus.
In effort to enhance security, the
university has successfully put up phase
one of a perimeter wall, stretching 1.6
kilometres. To complement this, the
installation of an integrated closed
circuit television CCTV project is being
rolled out this financial year.
Further, the reconstruction of the
Student Centre is set to commence in
November this year. Once complete,
the centre will house the offices of the
Dean of Students, Directorate of Sports
and Games, Student Union, Clubs and
Societies.
In order to improve quality of service
delivery, the university staff at various
cadres have been facilitated to
attend relevant trainings, seminars
and workshops both externally and
internally.
The institution has also funded
several members of the teaching
staff who are pursuing their PhDs.
Additionally, policies and statutes have
been improved and are now being
implemented, for the sustainable
promotion of staff welfare and the
continual improvement of service
delivery.
As a vibrant income generating project,
the university’s hotel and conference
facilities are being refurbished for the
attainment of state-of-the- art status by
the end of this financial year.
All these efforts, in addition to
the attainment of ISO 9001:2008
certification, signal our commitment
to the provision of quality services and
will ensure student and staff activities
operate smoothly.
To our graduating class of 2016, I wish
to congratulate you for your hard work
which culminates into this joyous
occasion. As we release you to the world,
I challenge you to remain innovative
in creating employment for yourselves
and others.
You must arm yourself with the heart
of a lion, the spirit to fight and not give
up. That Degree or Diploma you hold
in your hands today is really just your
learner’s permit for the rest of the drive
through life.
God bless you. God bless MMU.

M
ultimedia University of Kenya
(MMU) is today celebrating
its third graduation as a fully-
fledged public university having been
chartered on 1st March 2013.
The Academic Division of MMU, which I
head, has continued to enhance quality
teaching, learning and research. In
addition, the division works to improve
the welfare of students and to create a
conducive environment that inspires
technological innovation.
Since 2014, the academic division has
continued to promote an attractive
image for MMU. This has led to a
consistent increase in student enrolment
that reached an all-time high of 5,500 in
September 2016. The enhanced positive
image has tremendously improved the
competitiveness of MMU. As a result,
during the Sptember 2016 intake, MMU
was reported by the Kenya Universities
and Colleges Central Placement Service
(KUCCPS) as the only public university
that filled their declared student capacity
during the first selection.
To further promote competitiveness
of MMU, the division has invested in
the development and diversification
of our academic programmes. First, in
2016, MMU launched and formally
mounted two new competitive degree
courses, namely, Bachelor of Science
in Applied Optics and Lasers and
Bachelor of Science in Renewable
Energy and Technology. Second,
two new faculties - Faculty of Social
Sciences and Technology and Faculty
of Education and Technology – will
be launched before the end of 2016.
Third, a total of 14 new programmes –
including postgraduate programmes –
have successfully been formulated and
are ready for mounting in 2016.
Last, in September 2016, two
programmes in the Faculty of
Engineering and Technology namely,
Bachelor of Science in Electrical and
Telecommunication Engineering and
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
and Manufacturing Engineering,
were accredited by Engineers Board
of Kenya (EBK). This confirms the
continued commitment of MMU
to offer quality training as a public
technical university.
to fund research by our academic staff.
In September 2016, the university held
a successful innovation Week event,
for the second year running, where
our students showcased impressive
innovations. A total of about 20
innovations competed for the award
of prizes for the three best innovations
during the event.
To improve the academic profile of
MMU, we have continued to support
and motivate academic staff to pursue
Ph.D. degree and to seek promotions
internally. In 2016, three academic
staff attained their doctorate degrees;
several others were promoted to the
positions of lecturer, senior lecturer and
professor.
And one other staff was registered as
an Engineer by the EBK. The improved
academic profile of the staff at MMU
in 2016 further strengthened its
competitiveness making MMU a true
‘Leader in Innovative Technology.’
In 2016, 0ur students continued to
excel in extracurricular activities
including drama, games and sports.
We appreciate and thank our students
for their dedication in promoting the
image of university locally, nationally
and regionally.
In conclusion, as the leader of the
academic division, I am proud to
be associated with the impressive
achievements of MMU in 2016.
Today, during this auspicious 2016
graduation ceremony, I have full
confidence in presenting a cohort of
highly trained innovative young people
to our beloved nation of Kenya and to
the entire globe at large. Our graduands
are ready to go and inspired to make a
difference in the world they are about
to join. My congratulations to the 2016

what you receive today is your insurance
policy with the premium paid in full by
your hard work over the past 19 or so
years.
The value of that policy depends on
how much effort you put into your next
phase in life and what you do with it. It
is assumed that your diploma or degree
is your passport to higher earnings and
protection against tough economic
times.
Your hard earned credentials are a
demonstration of an effective public

LIBRARY
T
o echo the Biblical words in Hosea
4:6 ; “My people perish because of
lack of Knowledge”. This means
that we all need information inoder to
prosper in our plans.
Indeed, we face many challenges as
a result of basing our decisions on
either inadequate or lack of relevant
knowledge.
Thus, access to and use of knowledge
found in books, journals, and other
publications is necessary for, on one
hand, a citizen to make informed
decisions while students excel in their
academic endeavors.
The University Library is instrumental
in knowledge management, provision
of information services and adoption
of integrated web-based library
management system to support
teaching, learning and research
activities.
MMU library has made milestones in
the last three years. It has acquired a
web-based information system which
facilitates remote access of library
resources by students and staff.
The facility has current and relevant
information resources, well- equipped
digital-resources lab, qualified and
committed staff. The periodic review of
library operation hours enables users
to meet their dynamic information and
knowledge needs.
The library management is keen on
equipping students with the necessary
information literacy skills to ensure that
they confidently navigate through the
amorphous and dynamic information
environments.
Thus, as a department, we are proud
to have greatly contributed in the
academic success of the graduating
students.

last chapter at this level, is being penned
today.
We at MMMU have trained you in a
holistic manner to prepare you for life in
the 21st century.
The University has provided you with
opportunities for co-curricular activities
that included sports, clubs as well as
general activities such as the cultural

Through these activities we aspired to
imbue you with the soft skills that spice
up your degree and give you an edge in
a very competitive environment.
So on your step out, we are confident
that you are well equipped to meet the
challenges.
Be courageous and confident as you

Valedictorian’s
Message
M
y heart is filled with great joy as
I celebrate this 3rd graduation
ceremony. I am delighted to be
graduatingtodaywithfellowclassmates,
a testimony of all the hard work we have
put in over the last years.
To most of us, the journey towards this
auspiciousdayhasnotbeenaneasyone.
In fact, some dropped out, others lost
their lives/maimed in the course of their
studies while others were suspended for
various reasons and are yet to complete
their studies in the university.
Today marks the end of our
undergraduate education at this great
university, but nothing more fulfilling
than knowing that in addition to the
great papers we posses, there is an
equal great set of skills related to the
job market at our disposal.
As you all can attest, the job market
has never been as competitive as it
is, today. With the rise in the number
of universities in this country, a fresh
set of graduates are released into the
market place every so often, making the
playing field relatively crowded.
But the one thing I can assure potential
employers and those from the outside
looking in, is that MMU has trained
us well and we are very prepared to
conquer the job market in Kenya and
beyond.
I am a product of one of the most
vibrant faculties in the university -
Faculty of Media and Communication.
This faculty has not only taken the name
of this great university to the global
map of excellence in terms of media
training, but it has also established
itself as a golden tributary to the
mainstream media, supplying media
organizations with young and talented
communication professionals.
With state-of-the art media studios
equipped with the latest video and
audio editing suites, you get the
opportunity to the best among equals
whether as a newspaper reporter,
broadcast journalist or graphic designer
in the hands of communication,
journalism and renowned scholars who
are distinguished by their teaching and
research excellence. Their enthusiasm
and expertise in these dynamic
fields challenge and inspire students
and prepare them to become the
communication leaders of tomorrow.
Therefore, I thank our lecturers for their
support throughout our study. Without
the knowledge they shared with us,
stimulating and exciting sessions we
had with them, we would never have
excelled.
They have moulded us into who we are
and who we have become. And so to our
lecturers, hats off to you!
To our beloved parents, guardians and
caregivers who have played a major role
and are part of this success story being
told today. Many of you gave your all,
and for most, up to the last coin to keep
us in school. We say thank you.
Finally,onbehalfofmyfellowgraduands,
I take this opportunity to express my
gratitude the Vice Chancellor and his
management team led by Amb. Prof.
Festus Kaberia for making this place, a
home away from home. We will forever
remain indebted to you. We promise
to take the MMU brand higher in our

Thank you all and may God bless MMU.

institutions.
To attain the ISO 9001:2008 certification,
the university organised a series of
sensitizations, trainings and internal
and external audits in preparation for
certification.
It was therfore a joyous occasion
when the Kenya Bureau of Standards
(KEBS) awarded the university with a
certificate of registration to certify that
the institution had been audited and
found to comply with the requirements
of ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management
Systems (QMS).
“I wish to inform all members of staff
and students that the Audit Process by
KEBS was very successful. On behalf of
the University Management, I wish to
thank all of you for your efforts and co-
operation throughout the process,” said
the Vice Chancellor Amb. Prof. Festus
Kaberia.
The certification mirrors the
contributions of devoted staff,
students and the commitment of the
management to a process that began
on 19th January 2015. The university
affirmed its commitment to attaining
the certification on 15th June 2015 with

One on one with Daniel Owira
aka Otonglo
How did you settle on MMU as your
institution of choice?
I wanted to be a director and when I
approached practitioners I realized that
many of them had trained in MMU.
When I was introduced to a lecturer who
explained everything the institution has
to offer, my mind was made up. MMU
is nice; it’s a unique school and the
lecturers are great.
That was not always your choice was it?
I remember you wanted to be a lawyer.
You get to know what you want to be
when the KCSE results are released
(Laughs). I love watching investigative
dramas so I wanted to be an investigator.
I also explored working for an NGO like
UNICEF because I want to help people.
Eventually, I realized that I would love to
direct the creation of shows and films.
Don’t you think you will miss being in
front of the camera?
Directing is my passion. I really enjoy it
and I believe I will be good at it. Imagine
directing the crew and cast of a show
so you determine what goes where
(animatedly moving inanimate objects
this) and at the end you have a great
movie. That is a great job and I know I
will enjoy it.
What about acting? Will you appear in
Inspector Mwala again?
one time he told me that he has noticed
I am struggling with certain subjects and
asked me what I am doing to improve.
I remember it was when the Navy was
celebrating its 50th anniversary and he
took me with him to Mombasa and I
think that was the first time we got really
close.
I have appeared twice and maybe
I will again but it is not something
permanent. I don’t want t o
sign a contract. That is a
full time job and
at this point, my
concentration is
on my studies. That
is my first priority.
Ten minutes into the
interview, his phone
rings and he is clearly
uncomfortable with
answering the call. Since
this is the second time, I
tell him to answer. With
a look of relief, he does so
immediately while seated at
the table.
His part of the conversation is
clear and even more so is his
urgent request to his friend to
attend the upcoming class.
You seem quite committed to your
studies. Are you hoping to graduate
with first class honours?
I would want to. Education is key.
Everything has its time and right now
I am enjoying the learning experience.
Later, I will have time for love and other
things.
Did you actually present your report
forms to the president?
Yes I did. He would look at them and
Daniel Owira’s talented narration of Otonglo was heavily publicized after he had President Kenyatta in stitches in the 2013
edition of the Kenya Schools, Colleges and Universities Drama Festivals.
The young man’s talent shone so bright that he secured a coveted visit to the State House during which he endeared the
president into adopting him and paying his education up to university level. In the two years since the highly publicized affair,
Daniel has completed secondary school and joined Multimedia University of Kenya where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree
in film production and animation.
He speaks to MMU Graduation Magazine, giving insights into his life and how he hopes to manage acting and academics.

I hope you attend.
What do you do when you are not
working and studying? Describe a
typical weekend?
I enjoy my company so most Saturdays
I am indoors unless I have an event. I
listen to Bongo and sometimes friends
come over. But I still appear in shows
and adverts because I cannot rely on the
president for everything. I can’t call him
when I need new trousers.
What did you do with the money from
your first job?
Times were tough so we used it to clear
some bills. I remember we didn’t really
have seats for the house so we bought
some as well. It wasn’t a lot of money.

W
hen I was in high school in one
of the sequestered regions
of this beautiful land, alumni
members made frequent trips to the
school to motivate us. However, these
trips mostly served to make us break
the Mosaic Law ‘Though shall not covet’.
They made campus sound like a haven
and we were left with pre-conceived
notions of an enjoyable and carefree
campus life.
You see these guys would go on and on
about the freedom of campus; attending
class at freewill and frequent outings at
your convenience. For us, the freedom of
being away from parents who are always
punctuating our lives with ‘do this and
don’t do that’was the icing on the cake.
These guys seemingly forgot to tell us
that there is more to college than this.
When I recall the layers of deceit woven
carefully to please our ears, I can now
identify them for what they were – lies
of omission intended to encourage us to
work hard.
We may have wanted to be in university
for the wrong reasons but my time at
Didn’t you get anything for yourself?
I bought a Tecno phone.
As we conclude, is there anything you
want the readers to know? What do we
not know about you that you would
want us to know?
(Shaking his head) Sometimes I want to
go back to the normal me - without the
paparazzi and other’s expectations of
me. I miss the old times but I embrace
the new me because I have positively
changed. I am closer to God.
It is not all fun and games
MMU has been eye opening. College is
notallaboutbingedrinkingandpartying.
If anything, campus is supposed to make
us responsible so we exit as intelligent
and refined individuals.
My intention is not to bash the good
times in college. Fun is good in
moderation and in fact the cliché which
states that college is the best time of
our life has some grain of truth to it.
However, we tend to over indulge in fun
and games forgetting that what brought
us here is to gain quality education. We
needed to get our priorities right and I
believe we have been successful.
Four years are done and graduation is
with us. I know that some fellow is bound
to ask me about my experience and all
am going to tell him or her that is that
it was great. I will not expound so as to
allow him to build his own experience. I
do not wish to mislead.
I might never share the tales of my
freshman year but I had a great and
educative time. I am certainly going to
miss this place.

one of two African nations representing
the continent in the championships.
“They are among the best in the country.
Their participation in the championship
is a great inspiration to upcoming female
athletes,”applauds Team Kenya Manager
and MMU Softball Coach Francis Karugu.
MMU’s role in the event has led to
increased enrollment in various sports
within the campus as students now
realize the level of exposure attainable.
“There is increased interest in sports and
participation has gone up as others seek
to reach that level,”says Karugu.
MMU’s prowess in sports extends to
other sports as was evident when the
Volleyball men and Hockey men Teams
won the Kenya Universities Sports
Association (KUSA) National South

  • 4. 4 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 4 Chancellor Our university has become a favourite choice for students seeking university education. During the 2016 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) intake for public universities, our academic programmes emerged among the most competitive. MMU filled its full capacity during the first selection.” Hon. Catherine Kimura (Dr) I t gives me much joy to officiate at the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) since we became a chartered public university. On my own behalf and that of the Council, the Executive Management, all staff and students of MMU, I am delighted to welcome everyone to this ceremony. I appreciate the dedicated men and women whose efforts have culminated in today’s ceremony. Those graduating today dedicated many hours of study and disciplined work even when the going was tough. Parents and guardians sacrificed to provide financial support and much needed love to the graduands. The lecturers worked hard to enable them to acquire both the knowledge and skills that will help them to make a difference in their lives and in the wider society. Administrative and support staff ensured that learning took place in a conducive environment and the University Management provided the overall good leadership and dedication to service. Many of our external stakeholders have also supported us in various ways. To all of you, I say Asanteni sana. AsMMU,werecognisetheuniquerolewe have to play in a fast-evolving education sector. As a technical university, we strive to prepare graduates for the complex professional roles in a technologically advancing world. I am pleased to note that we have excelled in doing this beyond expectations. In order to perform even better, we need to augment the good support we are getting from our government by fostering new collaborations that will enable us to keep abreast of expensive but necessary technological advancements. We cannot do this alone. We therefore need to continuously seek public private partnerships. As the Chancellor, I am certain that the graduands we are presenting to the world today have been adequately prepared to help this country realise its vision 2030. This is because of the positive and glowing reports we continue to receive from employers who have engaged and continue to engage our graduates. In the last one year, our university has invested resources in laudable infrastructural developments. These include the construction of the perimeter wall, the building of an office and lecture hall block, the relocation of the CDB campus and the acquisition of an additional university bus and ambulance. These have been occasioned by the rising student population and the need to diversify our programme offerings. Our university has become a favourite choice for students seeking university education. During the 2016 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) intake for public universities, our academic programmes emerged the most competitive. MMU filled its declared capacity during the first selection exercise. The enrolment of self-sponsored students in the last year has also grown considerably. We therefore need to grow the institution in terms of physical and other resources. This need is more urgent as we plan to launch post- graduate programmes early next year. In this regard I urge the Cabinet Secretary to push for an increase in capitation for young universities such as ours. Let me conclude by addressing the class of 2016. Congratulations! You have done well and we are very proud of you. As you step out into the world, keep the values that we hold so dear here at MMU: the love for each other, integrity and above all, service to humanity. Be our good ambassadors and encourage others to join MMU. We hope to see most of you coming back to enrol in our post graduate programmes next year!
  • 5. 5 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 Chief Guest Dr. Fred Matiang’i Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) I t is a great pleasure to be part of the graduation ceremony at Multimedia University of Kenya today. This university has grown exponentially since it was chartered just over three years ago. Icongratulateyounotjustforgraduating another class, but also for the great progress you have made in the last one year. One of the great achievements is the construction of a perimeter wall that has given the university a face-lift. We are gathering to celebrate the achievements of the young men and women who graduate today with diplomas and degrees from various disciplines. Many of these young people will find employment in various fields, thanks to the steadily growing economy of our country. And because of our government’s dedication to empower the youth and women through facilities such as the youth enterprise development fund, some of them will start up their own enterprises. Whatever path you take, remember that there is room for you to pursue further education so that you can help us build our country’s knowledge economy. I am aware that the MMU Senate has in the recent past approved eight (8) masters’ programmes, while 12 others are scheduled for approval before the end of this year. I urge you to make use of these opportunities. As we strive to improve our institutions of higher learning, we need to promote quality service delivery. This will enable us to compete globally. I am therefore happy to note that MMU is now ISO 9001:2008 Certified. This achievement demonstrates your commitment to providing quality education and training, and also research and innovation. Allow me to address the latter two areas of research and innovation. If our country is to remain relevant, we need an educated citizenry that can support a constant flow of research and innovation; for us to sustain our intellectual competitiveness. You need therefore to enrich your teaching through continuous engagement in researchandinnovation.Thisishownew knowledge is generated, economies are strengthenedandsocietiestransformed. You should also strive to establish more strategic linkages and partnerships with industryleadersandforeignuniversities. These will greatly enrich your teaching and curriculum development and also contribute to your income generation for self-sustainability. In this regard I applaud your efforts to introduce new academic programmes in the Faculty of Science and Technology. These new programmes, such as the Bachelor of Science in Applied Optics and Lasers and the Bachelor of Science in Renewable Energy, will in the long run provide the country with high-level expertise that will drive our country’s industrialization agenda in line with Vision 2030. I must commend MMU Management for realising ethnic diversity in your staff profile. This is according to the recent report by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) on Ethnicity and Diversity of Public Universities in Kenya. As a university, you have shown that progress can be achieved when different communities and genders work together. You are a beacon of hope in our country. To the graduating class of 2016, accept my hearty congratulations. Go out into the world and make a difference. Your country needs you – and the knowledge and skills that you have acquired - to improve the lives of our people. Please serve your country and ensure that your legacy is felt long after you are gone. But for now, savour the moment and make merry for you have earned it. As we strive to improve our institutions of higher learning, we need to promote quality service delivery. This will enable us to compete globally. I am therefore happy to note that MMU is now ISO 9001:2008 Certified. This achievement demonstrates your commitment to providing quality education and training, and also research and innovation.
  • 6. 6 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 6 Chairman, University Council Dr. Herbert Misigo Amatsimbi I t gives me great pleasure to address the gathering of the Multimedia University of Kenya 2016 graduation ceremony. It is indeed a joyful moment for all us to gather together to celebrate the fruits of our hard work. May I take this earliest opportunity to congratulate all those graduating today, Hongera sana. It is just over three years since MMU received a charter from the Commission for University Education (CUE). As we hold our third graduation ceremony since we began operating as a fully- fledged public university, we are proud to observe that there is steady and sure progress in the growth and development of our university. In 2016, student enrolment grew by 12.3% to reach a total of 5,500 students. Similarly, there has been a steady rise in the number of students graduating from the various faculties. Further, the number of faculties at the university continue to grow. Plans for two additional faculties - the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education and Technology have now been approved by the university Senate and are ready to be launched. It is just over three years since MMU received a charter from the Commission for University Education (CUE). As we hold our third graduation ceremony since we began operating as a fully-fledged public university, we are proud to observe that there is steady and sure progress in the growth and development of our university.” In addition, our Senate has approved twenty new programmes to be rolled out at the start of 2017. To respond to this growth, the Council has approved several projects which are currently being implemented. We are in the process of constructing a new block that will provide additional teaching space and offices. At the same time, we are constructing a perimeter wall around the university to boost security and ensure a conducive learning environment. The Council also approved the renovation of the Multimedia University Hotel. This is expected to improve the image of the hotel and enhance the quality of services provided to our clients. The University Council acknowledges and greatly appreciates the efforts of the University Management in steering the university. The Council is well aware of the great talent and diversity among our staff members: it is no wonder that the Cohesion and Integration Commission recently singled out the Multimedia UniversityofKenyaforensuringdiversity in recruitment of its staff. MMU is a true microcosm of the larger Kenyan society. As the management and faculty work hard to ensure quality education for our students, the University Council wishes to assure you of our support. It is in this spirit that quality measures initiated by management, such as the ISO 9001: 2008 certification that was achieved this year and that we are celebrating today, have been supported by the council. We encourage you to ensure that these and other quality measures are not only developed but implemented fully. To our dear graduands, we release you today as ambassadors of this wonderful University.Gooutthereandbuildagood name for yourselves and the university. As you join the workforce, apply the skills and knowledge ingrained to you by your lecturers. The world will judge us by the quality of your work and products. Remember that you, in turn, are our products and the world will therefore judge us based on your performance. As you separate from your classmates, friends and lecturers, never underestimate the value of networking. It is my hope that the Multimedia alumni will form a great network that will influence the direction of our country. I conclude by urging you to strive to be the best that you can be, and to always strive to positively influence the world around you. Once more, congratulations to you our graduating students. May God bless you, may God bless our university.

  • 9. 9 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Finance and Planning Prof. Rosebella O. Maranga, PhD, MBS A s we celebrate the 3rd graduation ceremony and launch of ISO 9001:2008 Certification, it is important to realize that for modern day education to have a greater impact on society, the learning environment must be supportive, conducive and inspiring. Therefore, the capacity of any university to deliver quality education largely depends on both short-term and long term strategies of continual improvement. It is for this reason that I am truly humbled to be part of a vibrant team at Multimedia University of Kenya at a time when the university is undergoing continual improvement of infrastructural, policy and human resource development programs aimed at promoting innovative training, secure learning, cutting edge research and viable income generation. While addressing shortage of office spaceandlecture theatres, theuniversity is undertaking the construction of a four storey complex whose phase- one is expected to be complete by January 2017. The University has also enhanced its transportation fleet with an additional 51-seater bus, ambulance and a mini-bus. In effort to enhance security, the university has successfully put up phase one of a perimeter wall, stretching 1.6 kilometres. To complement this, the installation of an integrated closed circuit television CCTV project is being rolled out this financial year. Further, the reconstruction of the Student Centre is set to commence in November this year. Once complete, the centre will house the offices of the Dean of Students, Directorate of Sports and Games, Student Union, Clubs and Societies. In order to improve quality of service delivery, the university staff at various cadres have been facilitated to attend relevant trainings, seminars and workshops both externally and internally. The institution has also funded several members of the teaching staff who are pursuing their PhDs. Additionally, policies and statutes have been improved and are now being implemented, for the sustainable promotion of staff welfare and the continual improvement of service delivery. As a vibrant income generating project, the university’s hotel and conference facilities are being refurbished for the attainment of state-of-the- art status by the end of this financial year. All these efforts, in addition to the attainment of ISO 9001:2008 certification, signal our commitment to the provision of quality services and will ensure student and staff activities operate smoothly. To our graduating class of 2016, I wish to congratulate you for your hard work which culminates into this joyous occasion. Mbatia, PhD M ultimedia University of Kenya (MMU) is today celebrating its third graduation as a fully- fledged public university having been chartered on 1st March 2013. The Academic Division of MMU, which I head, has continued to enhance quality teaching, learning and research. In addition, the division works to improve the welfare of students and to create a conducive environment that inspires technological innovation. Since 2014, the academic division has continued to promote an attractive image for MMU. This has led to a consistent increase in student enrolment that reached an all-time high of 5,500 in September 2016. The enhanced positive image has tremendously improved the competitiveness of MMU. As a result, during the Sptember 2016 intake, MMU was reported by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) as the only public university that filled their declared student capacity during the first selection. To further promote competitiveness of MMU, the division has invested in the development and diversification of our academic programmes. First, in 2016, MMU launched and formally mounted two new competitive degree courses, namely, Bachelor of Science in Applied Optics and Lasers and Bachelor of Science in Renewable Energy and Technology. Second, two new faculties - Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology and Faculty of Education and Technology – will be launched before the end of 2016. Third, a total of 14 new programmes – including postgraduate programmes – have successfully been formulated and are ready for mounting in 2016. Last, in September 2016, two programmes in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology namely, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Telecommunication Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, were accredited by Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK). • 16. 16 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 16 Librarian & Dean of Students Briefs LIBRARY T o echo the Biblical words in Hosea 4:6 ; “My people perish because of lack of Knowledge”. This means that we all need information inoder to prosper in our plans. Indeed, we face many challenges as a result of basing our decisions on either inadequate or lack of relevant knowledge. Thus, access to and use of knowledge found in books, journals, and other publications is necessary for, on one hand, a citizen to make informed decisions while students excel in their academic endeavors. The University Library is instrumental in knowledge management, provision of information services and adoption of integrated web-based library management system to support teaching, learning and research activities. MMU library has made milestones in the last three years. It has acquired a web-based information system which facilitates remote access of library resources by students and staff. The facility has current and relevant information resources, well- equipped digital-resources lab, qualified and committed staff. The periodic review of library operation hours enables users to meet their dynamic information and knowledge needs. The library management is keen on equipping students with the necessary information literacy skills to ensure that they confidently navigate through the amorphous and dynamic information environments. Thus, as a department, we are proud to have greatly contributed in the academic success of the graduating students. Dean of Students C ongratulations to the MMU Class of 2016. • 17. 17 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 Valedictorian’s Message M y heart is filled with great joy as I celebrate this 3rd graduation ceremony. I am delighted to be graduatingtodaywithfellowclassmates, a testimony of all the hard work we have put in over the last years. To most of us, the journey towards this auspiciousdayhasnotbeenaneasyone. In fact, some dropped out, others lost their lives/maimed in the course of their studies while others were suspended for various reasons and are yet to complete their studies in the university. Today marks the end of our undergraduate education at this great university, but nothing more fulfilling than knowing that in addition to the great papers we posses, there is an equal great set of skills related to the job market at our disposal. As you all can attest, the job market has never been as competitive as it is, today. With the rise in the number of universities in this country, a fresh set of graduates are released into the market place every so often, making the playing field relatively crowded. But the one thing I can assure potential employers and those from the outside looking in, is that MMU has trained us well and we are very prepared to conquer the job market in Kenya and beyond. I am a product of one of the most vibrant faculties in the university - Faculty of Media and Communication. With state-of-the art media studios equipped with the latest video and audio editing suites, you get the opportunity to the best among equals whether as a newspaper reporter, broadcast journalist or graphic designer in the hands of communication, journalism and renowned scholars who are distinguished by their teaching and research excellence. Their enthusiasm and expertise in these dynamic fields challenge and inspire students and prepare them to become the communication leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, I thank our lecturers for their support throughout our study. Without the knowledge they shared with us, stimulating and exciting sessions we had with them, we would never have excelled. They have moulded us into who we are and who we have become. And so to our lecturers, hats off to you! To our beloved parents, guardians and caregivers who have played a major role and are part of this success story being told today. Many of you gave your all, and for most, up to the last coin to keep us in school. We say thank you. • 28. 28 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 28 One on one with Daniel Owira aka Otonglo How did you settle on MMU as your institution of choice? I wanted to be a director and when I approached practitioners I realized that many of them had trained in MMU. When I was introduced to a lecturer who explained everything the institution has to offer, my mind was made up. MMU is nice; it’s a unique school and the lecturers are great. That was not always your choice was it? I remember you wanted to be a lawyer. You get to know what you want to be when the KCSE results are released (Laughs). I love watching investigative dramas so I wanted to be an investigator. I also explored working for an NGO like UNICEF because I want to help people. Eventually, I realized that I would love to direct the creation of shows and films. Don’t you think you will miss being in front of the camera? Directing is my passion. I really enjoy it and I believe I will be good at it. Imagine directing the crew and cast of a show so you determine what goes where (animatedly moving inanimate objects this) and at the end you have a great movie. That is a great job and I know I will enjoy it. What about acting? Will you appear in Inspector Mwala again? one time he told me that he has noticed I am struggling with certain subjects and asked me what I am doing to improve. I remember it was when the Navy was celebrating its 50th anniversary and he took me with him to Mombasa and I think that was the first time we got really close. I have appeared twice and maybe I will again but it is not something permanent. I don’t want t o sign a contract. That is a full time job and at this point, my concentration is on my studies. That is my first priority. Ten minutes into the interview, his phone rings and he is clearly uncomfortable with answering the call. Since this is the second time, I tell him to answer. With a look of relief, he does so immediately while seated at the table. His part of the conversation is clear and even more so is his urgent request to his friend to attend the upcoming class. You seem quite committed to your studies. Are you hoping to graduate with first class honours? I would want to. Education is key. Everything has its time and right now I am enjoying the learning experience. Later, I will have time for love and other things. Did you actually present your report forms to the president? Yes I did. He would look at them and Daniel Owira’s talented narration of Otonglo was heavily publicized after he had President Kenyatta in stitches in the 2013 edition of the Kenya Schools, Colleges and Universities Drama Festivals. The young man’s talent shone so bright that he secured a coveted visit to the State House during which he endeared the president into adopting him and paying his education up to university level. In the two years since the highly publicized affair, Daniel has completed secondary school and joined Multimedia University of Kenya where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in film production and animation. He speaks to MMU Graduation Magazine, giving insights into his life and how he hopes to manage acting and academics. Daniel Owira, popularly known as Otonglo >>Turn to pg 29
  • 29. 29 Leader in Innovative TechnologyGradution Magazine October 2016 Are you in the MMU Drama Club? (Smiling)YesIam.Itisoneofthefirstclubs Ilookedfor.MMUhasaveryactiveDrama Clubthatwinsawards.Infactwewillhave a big Spotlight event at the Conference Hall on 10th November this year. It is about celebrating our diversity and I hope you attend. What do you do when you are not working and studying? Describe a typical weekend? I enjoy my company so most Saturdays I am indoors unless I have an event. I listen to Bongo and sometimes friends come over. But I still appear in shows and adverts because I cannot rely on the president for everything. I can’t call him when I need new trousers. What did you do with the money from your first job? Times were tough so we used it to clear some bills. I remember we didn’t really have seats for the house so we bought some as well. It wasn’t a lot of money. One on one with Daniel Owira aka Otonglo W hen I was in high school in one of the sequestered regions of this beautiful land, alumni members made frequent trips to the school to motivate us. However, these trips mostly served to make us break the Mosaic Law ‘Though shall not covet’. They made campus sound like a haven and we were left with pre-conceived notions of an enjoyable and carefree campus life. You see these guys would go on and on about the freedom of campus; attending class at freewill and frequent outings at your convenience. For us, the freedom of being away from parents who are always punctuating our lives with ‘do this and don’t do that’was the icing on the cake. These guys seemingly forgot to tell us that there is more to college than this. When I recall the layers of deceit woven carefully to please our ears, I can now identify them for what they were – lies of omission intended to encourage us to work hard. We may have wanted to be in university for the wrong reasons but my time at Didn’t you get anything for yourself? I bought a Tecno phone. As we conclude, is there anything you want the readers to know? What do we not know about you that you would want us to know? (Shaking his head) Sometimes I want to go back to the normal me - without the paparazzi and other’s expectations of me. I miss the old times but I embrace the new me because I have positively changed. I am closer to God. It is not all fun and games MMU has been eye opening. College is notallaboutbingedrinkingandpartying. If anything, campus is supposed to make us responsible so we exit as intelligent and refined individuals. My intention is not to bash the good times in college. Fun is good in moderation and in fact the cliché which states that college is the best time of our life has some grain of truth to it. However, we tend to over indulge in fun and games forgetting that what brought us here is to gain quality education. We needed to get our priorities right and I believe we have been successful. Four years are done and graduation is with us. I know that some fellow is bound to ask me about my experience and all am going to tell him or her that is that it was great. I will not expound so as to allow him to build his own experience. I do not wish to mislead. I might never share the tales of my freshman year but I had a great and educative time. I am certainly going to miss this place. <<from pg 28 By Masi Clinton
