Kindergarten Phonics Lesson
Blending Onsets and Rimes of CVC Words
By Lettie’s Lessons
Objectives and Common Core Standards
• Students will read words left to right. (CCS RF.K.1a)
• Students will recognize that spoken words are represented in written
language by specific sequence of letters (CCS RF.K.1b)
• Students will blend onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken
words. (CCS RF.K.2c)
• Students will pronounce the initial sounds (phonemes) in three-
phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words. (CCS
RF.K.2d)

Objectives and Common Core Standards
• Students will blend two to three phonemes into recognizable
words (CA* CCS RF.K.2f)
• Students will demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-
sound correspondences by producing the primary sound for each
consonant(CCS RF.K.3a)
• Students will identify which letters represent the five major vowels
and know the short sound of each vowel
( CA* CCS RF.K.3b)
(* Refers to the state of California additions to the Common Core Standards)

Say the sound of the initial (first) letter.
“/ă/”, the short vowel sound of the letter a.

Say the sound of the final (last) letter.
“/b/”

Blend together.
“ /ă/ /b/”

Say it. “ab” is a group of letters called the
rime.
ab
Now we are going to add a consonant at the beginning
of “ab” to form words. This consonant is called the onset.
ab
Say the sound of the initial (first) letter. “/c/”
Blend with “ab”.

Blend with “ab”.
