Where is HIM
Headed in the Future?
HIM is valuable
and expanding
▪ Bureau of Labor Statistics rates health
information management as one of the fastest
growing job sectors
▪ Projected to increase the number of jobs by
22% from 2012 through 2022
▪ The U.S. supported 186,300 HIM jobs in 2012
▪ CNNMoney/PayScale ranks HIM director as
number 27 out of America’s top 100 jobs with
big growth, great pay, and satisfying work
▪ Consultants with the right skill sets and
qualifications are in high demand with
Meaningful Use driving EHR adoption
across the U.S.
The Revenue Cycle of the Future
▪ As healthcare systems become more focused on the patient experience and quality
outcomes, the effective management of health data will become more important
▪ This includes care communications and data sharing in documents such as the
Continuity of Care Document and state health information networks
▪ As Meaningful Use continues to drive adoption of electronic health records (EHRs)
across the U.S., many HIM professionals will be needed to oversee data integrity,
applications build, and EHR management
▪ Reimbursement methodologies are shifting away from pay-for-service and towards
pay-for-performance, requiring strong health informatics and information
management knowledge and leadership within healthcare systems
Shifts in the Focus of HIM
Some skills are sunsetting
▪ Paper medical records knowledge and
management
▪ Physician babying
▪ Paper handling and archiving
▪ Checking for data manually
▪ Date and signature reviews
