Depression is experiencing a sad or depressed mood or
an inability to feel pleasure. It is a common mental disorder. More than
264 million people of all ages suffer from depression.

6. SAESONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER ( SAD) –
• Seasonal affective disorder is a period of major depressionthat most often
happens during the winter months, when the days grow short and one gets less
and less sunlight. Antidepressants and light therapy can help.
7. PSYCHOTIC DEDPRESSION-
• People with psychotic depression have the symptoms of major
depression along with “psychotic” symptoms, such as: Hallucinations
( seeing or hearing things that aren’t there), Delusions ( false beliefs).
A combination of antidepressant and antiosychotic drugs can treat
psychotic depression.

• Bipolar Disorder has mood episodes that range extreme of high
energy with an “up” mood to low “depressive” periods. When in the
low phase, major symptoms of depression observed.

career goals at times ignoring the basic psychological needs of each
other and the children. More over electronic revolution has reduced
interpersonal interactions within the family and in the society.

pressure on the mind and is proved to be an effective therapy in
initial stages of depression. Following could be some of the

12. MEDICINES FOR DEPRESSION
Medicines are the other key treatment for depression. The FDA has
approved three medicines to treat the depression phase: Seroquel,
Latudad and Olanzapine-fluxetine combination. Doctors sometimes
prescribe other drugs, such as
• Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRIs). Serotonin and
norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).
• Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and monoamine oxidase
inhibitors(MAOIs).
• ECT ( Electroconvulsive Therapy) for Depression.
